I just can't get my head around telling people they can't do their job because of their sex. I do understand if they have valid reasons why such as abuse etc, but for those where they are just more comfortable with a female what do you say? You're basically accusing someone of being a sexual predator. I can't imagine how that would make me feel at work.

BertrandRussell · 14/07/2018 13:40

"You're basically accusing someone of being a sexual predator"
No you're not. You're saying that you would prefer to be naked and vulnerable in front of a woman not a man.

BertrandRussell · 14/07/2018 13:41

Women are not responsible for men's feelings

Male professionals who work in fields such as healthcare accept this as part of their professionalism. They are fully aware of the need to offer same sex providers to allow for the dignity of the patient.

Any male who takes offence is not acting professionally.

No but ds was delivered by a male midwife which was fine

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 13:47

Not a male nurse but I've had gynaecological exams and a smear done by a male gynaecologist. He was perfectly fine. I think I've only ever had 2 or 3 smear tests done. The last one was about 12 years' ago by the male gynaecologist.

I've never had a mammogram.I asked to be removed from the screening list.

Wellthisunexpected · 14/07/2018 13:48

I can't really understand why a man would want to be a gynecologist

I asked my male gyno this. His specialist area was colposcopy and cervical cancer. He said he really liked cancer prevention and that CC was under resources, under researched and under recognised which he felt was wrong and wanted to change. I can't see anything weird about that.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 14/07/2018 13:51

Betrand Come of it, I know I'm not responsible for men's feelings. Because I wouldn't be dealing with 'men' I would be dealing with an individual professional who has trained hard to do the job. You may as well have written 'menz'.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 13:52

My son was born by elective cesarean delivered by a male doctor.

Daisydream · 14/07/2018 13:53

Your mammogram will be done by a female. I’m a radiographer and in the UK (not sure about other countries) we don’t train male radiographers in mammography. As others have said should you need a breast examination under ultrasound then this may be done by a male consultant with a female assistant.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 14/07/2018 13:54

Because of past experiences I am actually more comfortable with male practitioners but I wouldn't dream of refusing a female, I wonder how I would be viewed if I did?

IAmLurkacus · 14/07/2018 13:58

I have had internals by Male doctors, when female staff haven’t been available, I would prefer female staff. I’ve always stated female staff only at my births.

For booked appointments people should have the right to request someone of the same sex as themselves. For emergency situations it’s a bit different.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 14:00

I would never ask for a male or female doctor but my preference is a male doctor.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 14:04

The thought never occurred to me to ask. I was just so pleased the male consultant listened to me , understood and offered real , practical and effective solutions to my problem unlike the female doctor in the Well Woman clinic I had seen previously.

Can't see anybody caring to be honest. They'd just respect your wishes and get on with it.

busyboysmum · 14/07/2018 15:38

I did think that they had to offer a female chaperone if a male was doing a smear test. Wouldn't it therefore make more sense to just get a female to do it?

IAmLurkacus · 14/07/2018 15:41

Yep! I’ve always had female chaperones if a Male was doing an internal!

Somerville · 14/07/2018 15:53

I always ask for female medical professionals for anything intimate.

I lived in a houseshare with male medical students at one stage, and after overhearing them talk about trying to control their erections while doing breast examinations I decided not to believe the guff about 'it's just like any body part'.

Wildlingofthewest · 14/07/2018 15:59

@BertrandRussell

Think you need to loosen the straps on your Birkenstocks..,,Hmm

Shock
LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 16:03

There was no need for that comment Wilding

BertrandRussell · 14/07/2018 16:11

"You may as well have written 'menz'."

Ask me how I feel about a man's right to have his prostate examination from a male HCP. And stop making assumptions.

LunaTrap · 14/07/2018 16:14

Some people seem to take women having boundaries over who is allowed to touch their bodies very personally. Is it really beyond the imagination of those being snide to understand why some women would prefer to request a female HCP, even if they aren't bothered themselves?

BertrandRussell · 14/07/2018 16:18

It's all "cool girl" stuff. Like the women who call themselves men's women.

FranticallyPeaceful · 14/07/2018 16:29

Yes. I don’t see the issue at all. At this rate men won’t be allowed in any job role as to not to offend the women offended and scared by their own shadows
