AIBU To find mattress trials disgusting?

Some companies advertise ‘free 100 days trial’ of mattresses. If you don’t like it return it and get your money back.

So basically they must be selling used mattresses to people. I don’t believe for one second they sell them at a discount as ‘used’. Maybe some but not all. So I’m paying for a mattress someone has spent 100 nights sweating into.

They don't sell the returned ones.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 12/07/2018 19:53

Having worked as an advisor to one of those companies, I know for a fact that it's not true. Very few mattresses are returned and the loss on returned mattresses is factored in. They aren't re-sold.

longwayoff · 12/07/2018 19:54

This is my concern too.I like the idea of trying a mattress before committing but wheres it been before? No. Cant do it.

longwayoff · 12/07/2018 20:00

What happens to returns?

juls1888 · 12/07/2018 20:02

There's a local auction place near us who sells returned mattresses but they are clearly advertising as such and priced ridiculously cheap.

PlainPiglet · 12/07/2018 20:03

Heart foundation were gifted the Emma one we trialed and sent back.

Pippylou · 12/07/2018 20:05

If you search around, you can find companies who sell returns of all sorts of things. Generally it's very obvious that they are returns, packaged on pallets as job lots.

Fannyfanakerpants · 12/07/2018 20:06

A few of the big companies have eBay stores that sell reconditioned ones at a fraction of a price. I think they clean them and put new covers on them.

I take it you've never spent a night in a hotel

Ginkypig · 12/07/2018 20:36

The leesa mattress is donated to homeless charities (can't remember which ones now) if they are sent back.

I can't tell you when I was homeless I would have been truly delighted to have received a mattress that good even if it had been used for 100 nights to sleep on!

I can understand why you might feel disgusted by it but compared to what I had no choice but to sleep on while homeless I can't stress enough how grateful I would have been.

Ginkypig · 12/07/2018 20:37

i can't tell you how

FesteringCarbuncle · 12/07/2018 20:39

I've bought an Otty and a Casper that were returned
They check them and dump them if they are stained then they put a new cover on them
I take it you have never slept in a holiday home/hotel/b&b or anywhere other than your own bed
I'm thrilled with my bargains

SharronNeedles · 12/07/2018 20:40

Yeah, hotel mattresses have worse than sweat on them bork. One of the hotels I worked at used to 'clean' them and air dry them outside before putting them back in the rooms with protectors etc. I've seen all sorts of bodily fluids on them

CircleofWillis · 12/07/2018 20:52

Where can you buy the returned mattresses? They are so expensive new and I wouldnt mind a recovered one for cheap.

keepingbees · 12/07/2018 20:57

We bought one from Dreams and the condition of the returns promise was that you'd used the waterproof mattress protector on it.
We wanted to return ours but the promotion we'd bought it on ended at the same time as the trial period (conveniently) so we would have had to downgrade or add a whole load more money to get a better one so we kept it. Probably why so few get returned.

Hushnownobodycares · 12/07/2018 21:15

Can't say I haven't wondered about this. Not buying the hotel argument either. There's a whole lotta difference between effectively hiring something you know will have been shagged/sweated/bled on and paying top dollar for your own use of something that should be in pristine condition.

That said it's reassuring to know it apparently doesn't happen.

liverbird10 · 12/07/2018 21:35

Good Lord. They're not resold.

liverbird10 · 12/07/2018 21:36

@Ginkypig Well said.

roses2 · 12/07/2018 21:36

Eve and Simba sell refurbished mattresses on eBay.

If you search for "refurbished mattress + brand" on eBay it should come up in the result.

liverbird10 · 12/07/2018 21:38

Right, but they don't sell them on as new and pretend nobody's been near 'em!

longwayoff · 12/07/2018 21:45

Well I'm impressed. I will definitely think about trialling a mattress. Thanks, I wouldn't have done so without this info.

Ginkypig · 15/07/2018 00:59

Thanks I was just being honest Blush

I think it's hard to comprehend for most just what you'd be able to deal with until your faced with no other choice but to! Things that might seem disgusting or unsavoury you just find away to deal with them because there's no alternative.

That being said it's been years since I was in that position and if I was paying that much I wouldn't want it to be 2nd hand either!

I bought a refurbished Eve mattress for loads less than a new one. Pretty much all of it is replaced, but if you don't want one....erm, don't buy one! They're normally on Wowcher. And i I agree with the hotels argument - even if you went to The Ritz you'd be sleeping on a mattress 100 other people have slept in.

cptartapp · 24/09/2018 19:48

We recently bought a new mattress from Dreams. It came in plastic wrapping. It was the wrong size (our fault). We rang customer services who said they'd swap it in two weeks time and we could sleep on it in the meantime. No talk of a mattress protector. When they came to collect it the guy saw it in the bed and asked if we'd used a protector. "Er yes" DH lied. They put it back in the plastic and took it away.
