AIBU that this hairdresser's policy is OTT

I've received this email from my hairdresser's salon. I want to clarify that it wasn't directed to me specifically, it was sent to all their clients. I also want to clarify that I don't take my DCs to have their hair cut at this salon - way too expensive! I just think it's completely OTT and unfair to charge for the appointment but would be curious to see what people think.

"Hello All,

Parents be alert!

Head lice infections are seriously increasing and here at (name of salon) we again turning away approximently 4 children per week.

We have no wish to see any parent or the innocent victim embarrassed as it makes all concerned uncomfortable.

Please, before bringing your child into the salon be 100% certain that it won’t be you. Be proactive and we suggest treating the condition as follows experthealthreviews.com/head-lice-treatments with weekly inspections.

Please appreciate for Health & Safety regulations we are compelled to ask and perform a visual inspection, if the outcome is negative then we will have to refuse the appointment however there will still be a full charge for the lost service and time so better to be safe than sorry.

Finally, we also have an in-salon fact sheet available on request or by email.

Thanks again and let’s work together!

Best wishes"

I don't see a problem with that. They end up with a wasted appointment.

Ohlellykelly · 12/07/2018 16:46

Just check your child doesn't have head lice before you go.

Lots of hairdressers rent the chair and are self employed, so will be losing income if they have to turn people away.

whitershadeofpale · 12/07/2018 16:47

Why should they lose out as lazy parents can't be asked to check their kids' heads?

I think they're completely in the right.

rosesandflowers1 · 12/07/2018 16:47

I think YABU.

They have to check for lice, at a hairdressers it would spread like wildfire. And how humiliating for the child to be turned away once they got there.

Yecartmannew · 12/07/2018 16:47

I think it's perfectly reasonable.

They can't cut the hair of a person with a current infestation as they could then spread them to other clients.

And why should they then loose out financially?

Spam88 · 12/07/2018 16:47

Seems fair, they can't offer the appointment to anyone else at that point can they.

CrazyDuchess · 12/07/2018 16:47

Agree with other PPs I think YABU. Seems a sensible policy and worded rather nicely.

Sirzy · 12/07/2018 16:49

Yup more than fair!

chickenowner · 12/07/2018 16:49

Not OTT at all!

blackfootdaisy · 12/07/2018 16:49

I agree with them

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/07/2018 16:50

More than fair.

Other people shouldn't lose out cos parents can't be arsed to parent.

PorkFlute · 12/07/2018 16:50

If they’ve booked your child in and possibly had to turn down other customers then I see no problem with them charging for the appt.

henpeckedinchief · 12/07/2018 16:51

YABU - why should the hairdresser bear the financial burden of parents not checking for lice?

Sitranced · 12/07/2018 16:51

Whats wrong with that?

Travis1 · 12/07/2018 16:52

I agree with them, I had a friend who ran a really small hairdressers(2 chairs) and she didn't notice the lice straight away in a wee boys hair, she had to end up closing for the day to clean and sterilise all the equipment/clean all the towels etc. He'd been all over the place before she found them so couldn't take the risk of cross contamination.

MamaLupine · 12/07/2018 16:52

I always nit-comb my kids the night before hair appointments for this reason.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Pickleypickles · 12/07/2018 16:53

Maybe some people are unaware they won't cut hair woth head lice? I think its politely written and better to let people know in advance.

OftenHangry · 12/07/2018 16:54

Every industry is having problems with people booking and either not turning up or turning like this.
It's not OTT. That's someone's rent money missing because someone else didn't do the simple thing and check for lice. 🙄 if 10 people a week do it, the poor hairdresser will starve

sexnotgender · 12/07/2018 16:55

Totally reasonable. Weird that you'd think it was unreasonable!

OlennasWimple · 12/07/2018 16:55

What's your problem with it OP?

MyWhatICallUsername · 12/07/2018 16:56

How is that OTT OP?

SuitedandBooted · 12/07/2018 16:57

Perfectly fair.

Time is (their) money.

I always check my kids hair before it gets cut. Wet hair, drench with conditioner, and comb with a Nitty Gritty comb. It's not rocket science

ApolloandDaphne · 12/07/2018 16:58

Seems reasonable to me. Both my DDs have had lice and i would have been mortified if the hairdresser had been the ones to notice this. I most certainly would have paid for their wasted time and any cleaning they had to do.
