AIBU that this hairdresser's policy is OTT

I've received this email from my hairdresser's salon. I want to clarify that it wasn't directed to me specifically, it was sent to all their clients. I also want to clarify that I don't take my DCs to have their hair cut at this salon - way too expensive! I just think it's completely OTT and unfair to charge for the appointment but would be curious to see what people think.

"Hello All,

Parents be alert!

Head lice infections are seriously increasing and here at (name of salon) we again turning away approximently 4 children per week.

We have no wish to see any parent or the innocent victim embarrassed as it makes all concerned uncomfortable.

Please, before bringing your child into the salon be 100% certain that it won’t be you. Be proactive and we suggest treating the condition as follows experthealthreviews.com/head-lice-treatments with weekly inspections.

Please appreciate for Health & Safety regulations we are compelled to ask and perform a visual inspection, if the outcome is negative then we will have to refuse the appointment however there will still be a full charge for the lost service and time so better to be safe than sorry.

Finally, we also have an in-salon fact sheet available on request or by email.

Thanks again and let’s work together!

Best wishes"

Seems fine although would be helpful to know how close before you can cancel due to finding nits e.g. 48 hours before and you can move the appt with no charge.

My kids are yet to have nits for some reason so it wouldn't occur to me to check their heads beforehand - this email would be a useful reminder.

Littlechocola · 12/07/2018 16:58

I think it’s good.
Can you imagine starting to cut someone’s hair and they have head lice?
At least they are upfront about it.

YearOfYouRemember · 12/07/2018 16:59

I think the lack of proof reading would annoy me more than the email content.

NotABeliever · 12/07/2018 16:59

I just think that charging full price is a bit harsh maybe because it's a very large salon and I don't see how even 4 missed children's haircut appointments a week would cause financial hardship. Perhaps charging 50% would be fairer IMHO.

Perfectly fair. Why should it cost the hd in lost time and having to clean every thing just cos of bloody lazy parents? I wouldnt want to cut lousy hair!

Bumbumtaloo · 12/07/2018 17:00

Not OTT at all. Many years ago (mid-late 90’s) I trained to be a hairdresser and if someone came in with nits and actually made it to the chair, we would have to treat our all our own hair, all scissors, combs, brushed etc had to be disinfected along with chairs, floor etc I could go on but I’m sure you can get my point.

widgetbeana · 12/07/2018 17:01

No, their rent isn't 50% cheaper because of head lice.

I always check my own and children's hair before hair appointments. It's common sense and just a decent thing to do, like cleaning teeth before visiting the dentist.

chillpizza · 12/07/2018 17:01

Maybe they should set up the “lice” chair. Don’t think people would like that. Not unreasonable to point out they won’t cut the persons hair and will be charged.

nervousnails · 12/07/2018 17:01

Very very fair and YABU. Why would 50% be fairer? They have lost 100% of their fees and why should they take a hit because of the clients not being pro active?

Of course the charge is fair. They can't fill that space if they have to turn people away and why should they lose income?

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/07/2018 17:02

Why should they only charge half price.Confused

God do you really think spending two seconds checking hair is too much to ask a parent to do? Really ?

Atlantea · 12/07/2018 17:03

why shouldn't they charge the full price? they lose money because they will be unlikely to get someone else in

movinonup · 12/07/2018 17:04

That is very fair, YABU!

Willow2017 · 12/07/2018 17:04

You booked the appiuntment. They cant just fill it with 2 minutes notice why the hell should they lose money cos the parent cant be bothered to use nit treatments?

Doesn't matter what the size of the salon they are there to make money and pay wages etc not subsidise lazy parents who could do this several times a month and still not bother to delouse thier kids.

duckfuckduck · 12/07/2018 17:04

Nope they are not being unreasonable. If you’re such a lazy arse you can’t be bothered to check your child’s hair then maybe a hit in the packet will make you. They’ve booked out the time so they’re entitled.

If you don’t like it either go somewhere else or check your child’s hair.

Pengggwn · 12/07/2018 17:04

Financial hardship? They're not a charity, they're a business.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 12/07/2018 17:05

How can they enforce charging for missed appointments anyway?

notacooldad · 12/07/2018 17:07

Sounds fair enough.

TeeBee · 12/07/2018 17:07

They are being totally reasonable. Their staff still need paying; their overheads are still the same.

Well people might check in future.

I check my own head before the hairdresser's, never mind the kids Grin nothing more mortifying than being sent away I think.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/07/2018 17:08

Why 50%. Why not 30% or nothing? Had the parent checked the child’s hair, this wouldn’t happen. Turning up with headlice is the equivalent of cancellation within 24 hours. This is a business not a charity. You don’t get to decide how they run it.

I don’t have experience of this myself. However, when dd was younger she was afraid of having her hair cut. When she was 4 she agreed to a certain hairdresser at my salon cut her hair then got too afraid when the time came. I wasn’t charged. But I was fully prepared to pay and grateful not to have to.

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 12/07/2018 17:10

You can't actually be serious, OP?! So you fail to check your child for headline, hairdresser discovers them, has wasted his/her time and can't now fill the appointment - and you think they should bear the financial loss, or at least half of it?! It doesn't matter how much or little financial hardship it would cause - your fault, your price to pay. For goodness sake. Some serious entitlement right there.
