Why should I be penalised for my wine drinking choices?

The 25% off wine only applies to bottles £5 or more because obviously that move will singlehandedly save the nations livers. Hmm

I drink alcohol free wine which is under £5 and I want my discount Bastard cunting Sainsbury’s.Angry

@bounceandclimb Because shloer is overly sweet and very definitely not for me. I’d really love an non alcoholic option that tastes like an authentic good red

Lycanthropology · 12/07/2018 13:35

Alcohol free wine? Bleurgh!
Oh I love the sound/thought of it: would make non drinking and "dry" months do much easier, but it's always so sweet and horrible. Im still searching for that tasty, convincing dry wine substitute. Think I'll be waiting for a while!
OP you're not being penalised; you've chosen a product that's not part of an offer.

legolimb · 12/07/2018 13:37

I tried a few alcohol free wines when I was having a few months off.

Some were palatable but none were as nice as a really special wine. I am a bit of a wine snob which probably does affect my judgement.

Now some alcohol free beers were really quite tasty and i happily drank those.

SickOfSitting · 12/07/2018 13:38

The discount is for alcoholic wine, not non alcoholic wine.

If Coca Cola had a promotion on for 25% off a case of cans, would you then moan that you only drink Pepsi so why isn't that cola on offer too? ConfusedGrin

HoneyDragon · 12/07/2018 13:39

Sainsburys and Tesco would have it in the offer by choice. And did have it in. But now they can’t. On account of the governments minimun pricing laws for alcohol, if they included it they’d get a rap on the knuckles. It makes no sense.

but alcohol-free (or de-alcoholised) wine doesn't taste like wine! So not such a thick question.

In your opinion. Presumably the people who buy it think that it tastes enough like wine to be an acceptable substitute. Otherwise they wouldn't buy it. Still a thick question.

RedPony1 · 12/07/2018 13:50

I thought the reason people drank wine in the evening was because the ALCOHOL helped them relax after a hard day! Not sure in the point of wine if it doesn't do that?!

Boulshired · 12/07/2018 13:57

I like non alcoholic wine, even when drinking a glass of normal wine I do not drink enough for the alcohol to have an effect. The drink is more of a symbol that I am relaxing for the night.

SoupDragon · 12/07/2018 14:02

Their website seems to include it

HappyEverIftar · 12/07/2018 14:12

Is it totally alcohol free or just a very low percentage? Just curious.

cardibach · 12/07/2018 14:13

Even if you were being penalised (you aren’t) it would be for choosing a drink which costs less than £5, not for choosing non-alcoholic wine.

OyWithThePoodles · 12/07/2018 14:15

We drink loads of it during Sober October and it always makes me smile that you have to get ID'd at the self-checkout - even though it's as alcoholic as mouthwash. Making a note of the Wise Bartender for this October ... thanks for that!

Loubilou09 · 12/07/2018 14:18

In whose opinion? The one I buy tastes like wine to me so yes it IS a thick question.

It sells well, there is an area for it in most supermarkets so clearly not everyone agrees with your factual statement.

HTH Wink

ineedaholidaynow · 12/07/2018 14:18

I was surprised that I was ID'd when buying alcohol free wine, but I suppose it would look wrong children buying it!

Has had anyone had the wines from Wise Bartender, I have yet to find an alcohol free wine that isn't too sweet

WeirdCatLady · 12/07/2018 14:21

Alcohol free wine IS included in the offer though. Confused I’ve just been on the website and looked. For example....www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/sainsburys-alcohol-free-sparkling-wine-75cl

SugarIsAmazing · 12/07/2018 14:25

Wine is awful stuff full stop!

Longdistance · 12/07/2018 14:28

So, you want 25% off of grape juice?

Justtheonequestion · 12/07/2018 14:30

Just get lemonade!

CoralFish · 12/07/2018 14:32

Alcohol free wine IS included in the offer though. confused I’ve just been on the website and looked.

Maybe OP is in Scotland, where there are minimum pricing laws which mean the offer is not available there on lower priced bottles?

Emmasmum2013 · 12/07/2018 14:35

Is the wine you choose actually alcohol free? Or is it Low Alcohol? If its the latter I can see why it might fall under the governments pricing laws but otherwise, I don't get it.

As a PP said, there are loads of alcohol free and low alcohol wines in Sainbury's that are less than a fiver and are in the offer. ..

HoneyDragon · 12/07/2018 14:50

WeirdCatLady ShockShock

It wouldn’t go through on the till yesterday and they said it was because it was under a fiver and affected by the new rules.

Oh no.

Now I do have to be mad at my Sainsburys and not the goverenment (makes a refreshing change not being mad at the govt for something)

Myotherusernameisbest · 12/07/2018 14:51

I've tried a few alcohol free wines and they are all very odd. Some have tested sort of OK but the smell of them is rank.

I end up getting schloer or a posh bottled cordial or something. What wine is it you get that is nice and tastes like wine?

HoneyDragon · 12/07/2018 14:54

And allow me to reiterate.....

I don’t want discounted
Lemonade
Grape Juice
Or
Schloer

I just wanted to by the wine I like on offer as always and was told (not admittedly incorrectly) in Sainsburys they could no longer include it in the offer as it cost less than £5 because of alcohol laws.

Thank you as well for all of those who have expressed there very knowledgeable option of the products I buy from Sainsburys and why I shouldn’t buy them Flowers

I am particularly fond of the AF fizzy wine that they do. I’ve found that it’s one of the dryers ones out there and rather pleasant.

WeirdCatLady · 12/07/2018 14:56

If your wine of choice is discounted online might be worth booking a delivery then and stocking up?
