Unfair missed interview opportunity

CrazyHippo · 11/07/2018 18:08

Aibu to be pissed and upset by this?

Driving home from work and my phone rings in my bag. I dont have hands free etc so let it ring out and assuming it'd be DP or DM didnt attempt to stop safely to check it. 13minutes later im home and look at my phone. 1 missed call - no answerphone message etc. I didnt recognise the number so googled it - its a place ive applied for a job and am really keen about.
I called back to be told because I didnt answer the interview has been passed on to the next candidate on the list and theyre sorry.

And thats it.

Cause i didnt put myself and all other road users in danger to illegally answer my phone.. i dont get the interview.

Just a thought here...what if this is not company policy as such but just one person being a complete lazy arse/fuckwit? Is it worth getting hold of the employing manager and checking that this really is the policy? And if they say yes then give them a piece of your mind about it.....

CrazyHippo · 11/07/2018 20:38

Sorry for the late reply -been away sulking and finally pulled myself together.

Just to clear a few questions up. I applied online, was invited for a small test/exam type thing and was simply told "we will be in touch if you get through to interview stage".. no mention of when theyd be in touch. I took the test 6 days ago.

Thanks for all the positive replies. Maybe i did dodge a bullet afterall.

Onwards and upwards eh. I'll get a new job eventually.

Mrsmadevans · 11/07/2018 20:51

That is rubbish who on earth treats ppl like that ! You have surely missed a bullet .

Merryoldgoat · 11/07/2018 20:58

You really did dodge a bullet there - it’s a shortsighted and unprofessional way to behave - two qualities you definitely DON’T want from an employer.

Jamiefraserskilt · 11/07/2018 21:01

So they expect you to sit by the phone, eight hours a day for an indeterminate period in case they called?
Fuck that. Their loss.

Findingdotty · 11/07/2018 21:09

Definitely dodged a bullet. If it isn’t a rubbish company then it would have been a terrible manager making decisions like that. Don’t sweat it.

CrazyHippo · 13/07/2018 11:34

Thanks again for all the replies.

Just checking in to inform you all i have an interview...with another company.. whose call i missed as I dont take my phone in the shower (i know priorities eh..dont answer behind the wheel or in the shower)...but they left a message AND called me back...AND gave me an interview.

swingofthings · 13/07/2018 11:45

It is odd practice but they entitled to recruit as they see fit. It is no different to being invited to an interview on a day you absolutely can't make for whatever reason and them saying tough.

Remember thst you are only words on a piece of paper at this stage.

dingdongdigeridoo · 13/07/2018 11:58

What a bunch of knobs. What are the glass door reviews like for this company? I bet they’re awful. I once had a similar thing where a manager called as I was on the train, and it went through a tunnel which disconnected my call. I phoned back minutes later and she raged at me for ‘hanging up’ on her. I decided very quickly I didn’t want to work for her! Good luck with your next interview.

Justaboy · 13/07/2018 12:08

You did right waiting till it was safe to replay and if they passed you over just like that - well sod them can't be that good a buch to work for then!.

Jaxhog · 13/07/2018 12:18

Some employers betray their culture before you even start - like others have said - you dodged a bullet.
This.

DarlingNikita · 13/07/2018 12:22

I don't get how you can 'pass on' an interview Confused
Surely they decide they want to interview x, y and z candidates? Or are they so shitty that they're just thinking in terms of numbers of warm bodies to fill a certain number of jobs?

Can you say what industry it is? I'm curious.

I think you've definitely dodged a bullet anyway.

CrystalChronicles · 13/07/2018 12:30

Good luck with the new interview.

CrazyHippo · 13/07/2018 12:36

The industry is pharmacy so i guess for the position everyone who applied has to have the same qualification anyway... but still.

Glassdoor reviews arent fantastic but arent the worst ive seen either. Very target based rather than customer care.

Hopefully the one i have an interview for is more sucessful!

Racecardriver · 13/07/2018 12:37

YABU. This has happened to me before. Clearly they have enough candidates to be able to jump through the list like this, if they had really wanted you they would have called back. As it stands you need them more than they need you. If you missed the phone call then that's bad luck but just how it is.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 13/07/2018 12:40

Very odd way to proceed, unless they are not that blown away by any of the candidates. The most interesting ones will be at work anyway, so you don't expect them to answer their phone immediately. They probably have 100s of CVs and are sorting through them as quickly as possible.

Still not the best way to do it!

AynRandTheObjectivist · 13/07/2018 12:41

You don't want to work for pricks like that.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 13/07/2018 12:41

I once lost a job I’d interviewed for because I DID answer the phone...it was a nannying job and she rang on withheld (which my boss often did) so I answered, she explained who she was and asked if I could talk and I said probably best to call back in a hour or so once the child I was currently nannying would be down for a nap.

Apparently because I even dared answer the phone, I was unsuitableas she doesn’t want someone who would be in their phone all day

Some people are just idiots

TiredPony · 13/07/2018 12:48

I once worked with a company that wouldn't give interviews if you answered the phone - they didn't want to have people working for them that would answer their phones during work time Confused

Notmany · 13/07/2018 12:51

Safety first OP always. I presume they had not agreed a time to call you in advance? I wouldn't worry too much about the missed opportunity sounds like you may have dodged a bullet if this is how they treat candidates!

DarlingNikita · 13/07/2018 12:56

If you missed the phone call then that's bad luck but just how it is.
If you miss a phone call the obvious and sensible thing to do is for the caller to leave a message.

TiredPony, that's positively Kafkaesque Grin

NinetySixer · 13/07/2018 12:57

I work in Recruitment and that is horrendous practice. As other have said their workforce will be full of those who answered their phone not those who are best suited to the job.

‘Bullet’ and ‘dodge’ springs to mind.

Sprogletsmuvva · 13/07/2018 12:57

You do at least have the satisfaction (assuming all desire to work there has gone, of course) of slagging the company off if it comes up in casual conversation.

I’v twice had similar situations. One was an organisation that rang me up at 3 days ‘ notice for an interview, and started getting arsey about what time they wanted me to attend after they’d asked for/been told my availability. Oh, and it wasn’t even a job I’ be getting paid for (voluntary). The other was trying to arrange a hospital appointment on referral from the GP. I was told that if the assessing doctor accepted it, I’d be rung sometime in the next 15 days to be offered an appointment. Cue taking my phone everywhere for 3 weeks and fretting every time I went somewhere with poor reception. (At the end of that time I hadn’t of course heard back, so had to ring again...and didn’t get the remotest acknowledgment that they’d messed me around.)
