Unfair missed interview opportunity

Aibu to be pissed and upset by this?

Driving home from work and my phone rings in my bag. I dont have hands free etc so let it ring out and assuming it'd be DP or DM didnt attempt to stop safely to check it. 13minutes later im home and look at my phone. 1 missed call - no answerphone message etc. I didnt recognise the number so googled it - its a place ive applied for a job and am really keen about.
I called back to be told because I didnt answer the interview has been passed on to the next candidate on the list and theyre sorry.

And thats it.

Cause i didnt put myself and all other road users in danger to illegally answer my phone.. i dont get the interview.

OP posts:
Bramble71 · 11/07/2018 19:03

How daft of them. If they want to interview a particular candidate, surely they want to interview that particular candidate? What a bizarre policy! I'm not surprised you're hacked off, OP.

GrandTheftWalrus · 11/07/2018 19:04

So has OP to pull over every time her phone rings incase it's the company?

BellyDancer124 · 11/07/2018 19:06

So can I just clarify, they didn’t arrange to call you at a specific time? They just randomly called? Disgrace!

Gabilan · 11/07/2018 19:07

They're wankers. Who decides that answering their call is more important than everyone else's road safety? Fuck that. I wouldn't work for them.

GreenMeerkat · 11/07/2018 19:12

That actually really bad practice. I am involved in recruitment where I work and we have to provide all kinds of evidence as to why someone is refused an interview (we have forms to fill in against the application form). Anyone who meets the essential criteria for the job must be considered for the interview. Answering the phone immediately is not one of them! With such an unfair recruitment policy, you'd be better off not working there. God knows how bad some of their other policies are!

BolleauxtoBankers · 11/07/2018 19:12

I'd be furious if I were you! They seem to think like *malmi, which is odd to me, in normal life, and I would be grateful for having dodged a bullet if that is their ethos!

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 11/07/2018 19:13

Unfortunate and unfair, but if you were equally qualified and they only want to interview one person at a time for some reason, them's the breaks! If the other person doesn't succeed at the interview they may ring you again, so I suggest you store the number in your phone and be willing to pull over to take the call next time!

Hmm how about on a motorway?! What a ridiculous comment Miami.

Agreed OP, bullet well and truly dodged.

Arum51 · 11/07/2018 19:14

Proper companies will email you with an invite to interview, or leave a message on your phone, and ask for a response. These people are total jizztrumpets.

I agree with just about everyone else, you've had a lucky escape. Can you imagine what it would actually be like to work for these slapdash idiots? You'd hate it!

In a fairly short space of time, you'll think this is hilarious. Good luck with your job search - you're obviously good enough for people to want to interview you, so it won't be long before somewhere with a professional HR department calls.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/07/2018 19:14

How ridiculous. They basically then employ the least busy person. Not the most productive one.

MrsJonSno · 11/07/2018 19:17

Is it a recruitment agency? If they have an urgent vacancy to fill and the clients wants 5 candidates for interview ASAP then they will work down the list of suitable candidates until the slots are filled.

RideSallyRide76 · 11/07/2018 19:21

The thing is, if they don't treat you decently at this stage, they won't treat you decently as an employee. What a ridiculous system. I'm not surprised you're annoyed and upset but I think you dodged a bullet.

PixelDust · 11/07/2018 19:34

I work in recruitment and that is a weird way to work. Even on a short deadline I haven't heard of anyone in the company I work for pull a stunt like that.

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2018 19:37

So what if you were working late in a meeting because you are dedicated to your work?

Their loss...why would you want to work somewhere where this was reasonable? I'd still email them and tell them what I thought though

kimber83 · 11/07/2018 19:38

you missed a bullet there, OP.

can you imagine how they treat their employees?

Glassdoor, Indeed and other similar sites allow you to post a review. maybe time to warn others of your experience?

TroubledLichen · 11/07/2018 19:39

This is mostly repeating what other posters have said but consider this a really lucky escape. The company sounds horrible, they obviously don’t care about recruiting the best candidate and they clear don’t value people. Lots of luck for your job search, you can definitely do better!

Maelstrop · 11/07/2018 19:44

How ridiculous! That’s really unfair. Dumb way to eliminate candidates.

SaltyPeanut · 11/07/2018 19:53

Good lord, can you imagine if you had ended up working for them, you'd end up terrified to let your phone out of your site in case it got you sacked.

Lucky escape.

SaltyPeanut · 11/07/2018 19:53

Or sight even, bloody autocorrect.

It would be a world of pain working for such an employer.

CammieKennaway · 11/07/2018 19:58

You're not being unreasonable but try to see it in a positive light - would you really want to work for such a fickle company?
Apply to a company that deserves you and your talent.

VioletCharlotte · 11/07/2018 19:58

Absolutely their loss. And a win for you, as any company who behaves like this would not be good to work for.

kitkatsky · 11/07/2018 19:59

What a shitty response! But I'm glad for you because Imagine the pressure if you'd got the job xx

ManicUnicorn · 11/07/2018 20:13

Something similar happened to me. I was invited to an interview, didn't respond to the message on time and told when I got back to them that they'd given my spot to someone else. I was gutted at the time but now think I had a lucky escape as they are obviously very anal and inflexiable, why would I want to work for someone like that?

Ilovelblue · 11/07/2018 20:14

I was also going to tell you to look at reviews on (and maybe post if possible) the Glassdoor website.

I think you had a lucky escape, even though it may not seem like it just now.
