Clothes coming out of washing machine with holes in!

Does anyone know what’s causing this so I can put a stop to it. It’s going to cost a fortune. It’s a series of small holes at the front of a t shirt / top. It doesn’t seem to be on any trousers or anything. Thanks if anyone can shed any light.

Zips catching fabric?

Trinity66 · 11/07/2018 14:39

This happened with our old dryer, vests and lighter items were getting caught in the front part of the machine for some reason

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 11/07/2018 14:39

This always happens to DH's t shirts but not mine or the kids. I think it's because he wears a belt everyday but we don't.

FASH84 · 11/07/2018 14:41

Is there a rogue bra wire? Ours used to do this and a bra wire had escaped and was poking through one of the holes in the drum, I thought we had moths for ages

FATEdestiny · 11/07/2018 14:45

This is a thing, are they around the belly button area?

General 'tinternet consensus is that the fabric runs on trouser zip/button area which weakens the fabric. Then the wash further weakens the fabric and creates the holes.

We found that thicker, more robust fabrics lasted better than cheap/flimsy t-shirt. However both still got holes in eventually

DH and I have recently lost significant amounts of weight (5st and 6st respectively) and I can tell you that we now dont get these holes in our clothes anymore. So losing weight could help 🙈

PirateWeasel · 11/07/2018 16:09

Do the wearers of the holey clothes wear cross-body bags? These can rub on tops and cause wear and tear over time.

Myotherusernameisbest · 11/07/2018 16:11

Most likely its your bra clasps. Just make sure when you wash bras that they are done up and it will help prevent them catching and making holes in your other clothes.

mscellophane · 11/07/2018 16:12

Are they at kitchen worktop height? I had this from granite work surface

MuddlingThrough1724 · 11/07/2018 16:15

I had exactly the same issue! I got a new washing machine which seems to have, fingers crossed, solved the problem. I also read somewhere recently that using too much detergent can cause additional wear and small holes that then get worse quickly.

Pibplob · 11/07/2018 16:28

They are at granite Work top height for me but not for my partner. Could be a bra. Will fasten it up. No missing wires anywhere and it’s a fairly new machine - for it at xmas time. I wear a cross body bag but he doesn’t. It doesn’t rub where the holes are though?

Apparently this is why jeans and other items with metal fastenings should be washed separately. Anything metal can push into other clothes during fast spin and cause damage. I do bras in a laundry bag but don't want to do a separate wash just for a few jeans so we put up with the occasional holes in t-shirts.

Pickleypickles · 11/07/2018 16:38

This was happening to a lot of my tops then I worked out i was trapping them in the soup all the time when i went the loo and stuff (i originally blamed the washing machine too) could it be that?

Mosaic123 · 11/07/2018 16:40

Or moths?

Pebblespony · 11/07/2018 16:43

I lost a bra wire in our machine. I retrieved it but it had damaged the drum and caused a pointy bit near one of the holes. It shredded my clothes and pulled threads etc.

ToadOfSadness · 11/07/2018 16:44

soup?

I put bras, done up, in a zip up mesh bag for the wash, stops them catching on things and if the wires come out they don't go into the machine.

Having said that, sometimes a zip will catch on something so I make sure that all trousers etc. with zips are done up and turned inside out before washing.

Sometimes a weak link in the t shirt fabric will cause holes where it has had wear/rubbed.

Pebblespony · 11/07/2018 16:45

Picklypickles I presume it's a typo but I'm intrigued to know how you trapped your clothes in soup.

ToadOfSadness · 11/07/2018 16:46

Also you can get larger laundry bags for delicate items so you could put tops in one of those. I have an old one that closes with poppers rather than a zip which is great.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 11/07/2018 16:52

Just wash your t shirts in a pillow case or duvet cover. It’s the other items in the laundry that are causing the problems x

bellabasset · 11/07/2018 16:55

I wash heavier clothes separately. Might be obvious but do zips up. Try putting t-shirts in a pillowcase and see if that solves it.

I often used to put socks in a pillowcase.

BusterGonad · 11/07/2018 16:57

I hate this, someone came to look at my machine and there was nothing wrong with it, I was told to put soft items (tshirts etc) on a delicate cycle rather than cotton or 30 min quick wash as the spin is too fast for them.

BusterGonad · 11/07/2018 16:57

I had this!

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 11/07/2018 16:59

If you have fine-knit or lightweight jersey items, chuck them into old white pillowcases each time you wash them, knot the top and it stops it.

The alternative is to wash all bras together and all heavy, zipped items together as it's the metal catching on the t-shirts and vests that pulls the holes.

Thereshegoesagain · 11/07/2018 17:00

My mum told me to go over every bit of the washing machine drum with your hand to check whether there might be a tiny sharp piece which is catching on your clothes when I had the same issue.

randomchap · 11/07/2018 17:16

I used to get this when I overfilled the drum. I now leave some more space and get far fewer holes.

DonkeyPunch88 · 11/07/2018 17:19

That actually sounds more like moths (carpet moths) rather than the washing machine
