Sats results, is this normal or is school bu?

KS2 sats results were released to schools yesterday, my dd school won't release them until next week as they like to check the results and marking. I think this is unfair to the children as they worked hard for these tests and deserve to know the results when they are released.

I didn't tell my dd when the results were due she found out from classmates so it has obviously been anticipated in the class.

For the record, I am not a great believer in sats and as long as I know my child tried her best the results aren't important to me, I just feel that the class put a lot of time and effort in to the tests and deserve their results when released.

Aibu or is school?

A week, a shmeek. No biggie. It's better to check before than after they're released.

dontlikebeards · 11/07/2018 13:01

I get your point but the children were not told this and expected to receive results yesterday.

French2019 · 11/07/2018 13:02

I don't think it's healthy for kids to be too fixated on the results anyway, so if the school are downplaying their importance, I see no issue with that. It's not like having to wait for GCSE/A-level results, is it?

MerryMarigold · 11/07/2018 13:04

When were the children told they'd get their results? Did they (or more likely the parents) just assume? I think the later the better, nearer to end of term, nips too much competitive parenting in the bud.

RedSkyLastNight · 11/07/2018 13:06

Who told them to expect the results yesterday? If the school, then it's poor of them to change their mind.
IIRC my DC weren't told when they'd get SATs results other than it would be before the end of term!

TeaAndNoSympathy · 11/07/2018 13:08

Our school gives the results out with end of term reports which I think is fine. They’re SATs results, not GCSEs. Waiting a week is fine and normal.

dontlikebeards · 11/07/2018 13:09

French2019 I completely agree that the results are unimportant however the school must have been aware that the children were anticipating the results being released.

As to your point about the school downplaying the importance of the results, the school and many other schools spent many months telling pupils how important the tests are.

We're getting ours with end of term reports on Friday. Headteacher has said this all along, it's fine and my DD is quite "whatever" about it.

AlexanderHamilton · 11/07/2018 13:10

Unless you were told they would get the results yesterday I think it’s entirely reasonable of the school to want to check etc first.

blackbirdbluebottle · 11/07/2018 13:10

YANBU I think the kids would feel upset if they build up to getting results and not get them. Imagine the uproar if this was GCSEs!

dontlikebeards · 11/07/2018 13:12

I can only assume that some parents in the class must have told their children that yesterday was results day. We certainly never mentioned it to our dd. Maybe I am directing my annoyance at the wrong place and should be annoyed at parents who have mentioned it to their children rather than the school .

TeenTimesTwo · 11/07/2018 13:14

YABU to expect the school to release the results on the day they receive them. Some schools do, but many would prefer to check they are 'as expected' before releasing, and to write a covering letter to go home with them etc. Furthermore some schools may prefer to delay release until Friday going home time in order to minimise sharing and upset between pupils.

RedSkyLastNight · 11/07/2018 13:14

Imagine the uproar if this was GCSEs!

Schools do get GCSE results before they are released to students!
There is no uproar ...

FrayedHem · 11/07/2018 13:18

My Yr6 child's teacher told them yesterday he only knew the overall class score?, but had not seen any individual results (he didn't reveal the class score). It took a few days last year for my elder child's results to come home last year and the school had requested a few to be re-marked. Not that any of that was directly communicated and I think that's the problem, when they bring home snippets from school.

blackbirdbluebottle · 11/07/2018 13:22

Redsky I mean imagine the uproar if one school didn’t give the GCSE results out on the official day when all the other pupils from other schools get them

SassitudeandSparkle · 11/07/2018 13:29

It's the residential week for my child's Yr6 this week, so they were told in advance that the results would arrive when they were away and they would get them when they are back.

I would check that the school actually told the children the results day before going in all guns blazing tbh. I can see why the parents would ask because you do hear a lot about it, though.

AlexanderHamilton · 11/07/2018 13:30

But the dufference is there is an official day that GCSE results are released to students & even then some school email early morning others have designated times they can be collected. There is not an official day that SATS results are released to students it is clearly stated in the Standards & Testing agency guide to parents that this is the case. Furthermore the school has to givevthe redukts out with other information such as teacher assessments, scaled scores & comparative information.

ARoomSomewhere · 11/07/2018 13:41

Dd brought hers home on Monday.

Shednik · 11/07/2018 13:47

Our school don't tell the children their results and I have asked them not to tell me either!

RedRedBluee · 11/07/2018 13:48

I don’t think it’s that much of a big deal. Way too much energy is spent worrying about these results nowadays.
I remember when I did mine I couldn’t care less about what I got and I didn’t even realise that we would be getting results back or when that would be.... and I got top marks.
Whatever happened to kids just having fun and being carefree.

drnectarine · 11/07/2018 13:52

'imagine the uproar if one school didn’t give the GCSE results out on the official day when all the other pupils from other schools get them'

There isn't an official day when all schools give out SATS results - it varies from school to school.

BalthazarImpresario · 11/07/2018 13:52

No biggie the results are insignificant whereas gcse's affect above college course etc your child gets on. No one is ever asked for their SATs results.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 11/07/2018 14:03

KS2 sats results were released to schools yesterday, my dd school won't release them until next week as they like to check the results and marking. I think this is unfair to the children as they worked hard for these tests and deserve to know the results when they are released.

So the school are going to check the marking and ensure that no child has been marked much lower than they should have been - what's the problem?

AlexanderHamilton · 11/07/2018 14:21

"Schools have a statutory duty to prepare annual reports for parents before the end of the summer term. The report must start from the day after the last report was given, and cover each pupil’s:

achievements
general progress
attendance record

Reports for pupils at the end of key stage 1 (KS1) and key stage 2 (KS2) must also include the outcomes of national curriculum assessments, as detailed below.

For pupils at the end of KS2, reports must include:

the results of any national curriculum tests taken, including the pupil’s scaled score, and whether or not they met the expected standard
the outcomes of statutory national curriculum TA in English reading, English writing, mathematics and science
where appropriate, a statement explaining why any national curriculum test has not been taken

KS2 reports must also include:

comparative information about the attainment of pupils of the same age in the school
comparative information about the attainment in the core subjects of pupils of the same age nationally"

The school have until the end of term to check, collate and produce the report with the results.

reluctantbrit · 11/07/2018 14:23

We didn't say anything to DD but her teacher mentioned that the school had the results and they would get their individual score with the report on Monday or Tuesday.

I can't be bothered at all but as DD worked really hard in lessons and improved a lot (anyway, SATS or not) I wish her a good result for her sake.

DD has far too many things going on which are more important, leavers' play, leavers' party, assembly and talk about a fun trip for bowling/swimming. And it's her birthday tomorrow, SATS come a very distant last for her.
