Hate my new expensive sofa

Sad Not an Aibu I know, but just posting in the hope that someone can offer ideas or advice. Our cheap, comfy fabric corner sofa was getting a bit saggy and smelly, so we decided to splash out on a leather sofa (leather essential due to the new dog, fur, smells etc). I saw a sofa I absolutely fell in love with, but DH had his heart set on a recliner so we ended up compromising on a two seater sofa and reclining armchair. It wasn't a choice I was happy with, just the best compromise we could reach. Our living room is quite narrow and we were limited in terms of what would fit.

We've had them just under a week and I hate them. The recliner has to sit right in the middle of the living room with a wire going to the plug socket, because it needs space to recline. I've always thought recliners were tacky, and having tried it, I still do. It's also already playing up. The sofa is too small and too narrow. It did seem OK in the store, and I thought I could get to like it, but it's just really not comfy and is starting to cause me back pain.

I called the company today and they have just said they have a no returns policy, which is not what their website suggests at all. Am I allowed to name them? Not sure. Anyway, I just feel bloody miserable now. All together the things cost £1800, which is a lot of money for us. Sigh.

We got rid of our really comfy leather sofas and replaced them with fabric sofas and I absolutely hate them. Yes they are comfy but that's about it. Next time it's back to leather but not for a while due to the high cost of these loathesome ones.

Hope you get something sorted OP. Apparently you can get recliners that are designed to sit against a wall.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 12:01

Mook we bought online, but tried them in store before that. Would we still be covered, do you know?

youknowwherethecityis · 11/07/2018 12:01

Did you buy them online or instore?

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 11/07/2018 12:05

We had a really nice sofa from Furniture Village - beige cord - and really comfortable. However, DH spent so much time leaning on his armrest that the stuffing disintegrated in about 6 months and his whole 'half' of the sofa was about 10 cm lower than 'my' side! Replaced with leather which is nice but not as soft and comfortable as the fabric one. And what is it with men and recliners? I hate them - I am quite tall and even if I half sit up, my feet still stick over the end!

youknowwherethecityis · 11/07/2018 12:05

Wish I'd waited 30 seconds before posting!

Doesn't matter if you tried them instore - you purchased online and you have up to 2 weeks to back out of the purchase.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 12:06

Reassuring to know I'm not the only one in this position, anyway, though Wine for the rest of you. It really didn't occur to me what a risky business it is. All our previous sofas were cheap, so the issue didn't come up.

Fintress No more recliners! Ever ever ever! Furniture shouldn't move, and certainly shouldn't plug into anything, it's an abomination in the eyes of nature.

youknow Fucking awesome, thank you!!

DH is always a bit Hmm about MN, don't think he'll be any happier now you've helped me get rid of his lovely recliner Grin Take my word for it though, it really is fuck ugly. What was I thinking. Even the dog won't go near it and she tries to lie down on any flat surface more than a couple of cm square.

Slatkater · 11/07/2018 12:11

Have you gone back to compare your sofa to the one that you originally tried in the store?

speakout · 11/07/2018 12:16

Sorry you are in this situation OP.

Spending £1800 on a sofa and chair made me cough on my tea.

thegreylady · 11/07/2018 12:17

We bought a leather recliner and a 3 seater sofa with manual recliners at each end. We bought them from dfs, interest free credit and long guarantee. That was 4 years ago and we love them, so squishy and comfortable. The recliner is near a socket though.

Pringlemunchers · 11/07/2018 12:18

I would recommend not mentioning that you tried them instore. Just say you purchased them online.

AudiQ2 · 11/07/2018 12:19

@Orangesandlemons82 Yes you are covered. You have to put your request in writing according to the website. Using the address I posted earlier

AudiQ2 · 11/07/2018 12:20

Just don't mention that you inspected in store! They can't prove it!

AudiQ2 · 11/07/2018 12:21

You will need to hire a van & man to take them to their distribution centre however!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 12:26

Slat Not yet, we only had The Conversation last night.

Thanks you Audi. At this point I'd be prepared to take them back myself in a wheelbarrow!

Oh gosh this is an ongoing theme, happened to me, my parents and in laws in past two yrs!! I feel your pain!!

I would have another couple of try’s with the retailer then I’d not like others have said sell it on eBay/gumtree and cut your losses. See what your rights are but I don’t think you have to accept a repair on the chair.

I know what you mean about leather and sitting upright, this is what my MIL is like, it’s really narrow too and you find yourself slipping off it.

Me and DM had ours made mime’s just nothing like what I asked for! My DM must have temporarily lost her mind as it a horrific colour and matches nothing in her sitting room, it’s hard as rocks too!!!!

FusionChefGeoff · 11/07/2018 13:34

Would throws / big / small scatter cushions help to make it comfier?? And I mean proper feather cushions not shitty foam display ones.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 13:55

Fusion bought cushions, which helped a bit, but the main issue is that it's too small and shallow and the recliner just looks awful.

The ebay seller is loungingaround. I can highly reccommend them!

ginandtonicdontmindifido · 11/07/2018 20:16

Look at your local auction rooms or sale room.com for replacements, I bought I virtually brand new 2seater Laura Ashley for £50. I saw two fabulous 6 month old sofas go through a sale recently for £100, absolute bargains to be had

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 20:31

Thanks, will have a look.

womcombat · 11/07/2018 20:34

Won't the dog scratch leather? We have a John Lewis fabric one and the covers are machine washable.

Did you buy the sofa online? You may be covered by distance selling regs?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/07/2018 20:58

I actually like furniture that 's a bit battered and lived-in (but not smelly). I'd be happy with a few scratches, but DH likes things shiny. We're incompatible in a few respects, when you think about it Grin
