Chatting to my DD at bedtime tonight and she mentioned that they had another lesson on puberty today. Apparently the TA suggested that the girls might want to have a look at their vaginas with a mirror.

One of the girls said that she had never looked at hers.

DD said 'It's okay that I told everyone that you look at yours isn't it mummy?'

The occasion she is referring to is when I was first using a mooncup and I used a mirror to check and she walked in on me.

Apparently the TA said 'See needmoresleepnow's mum looks at her vagina in the mirror'

The TA will have shared that story with the staff room won't she?

I'm going to have to change schools aren't I?

Parent Eve will be erm interesting. Shock

PolkaDotAfroCircus · 10/07/2018 23:04

Have you considered adoption?

PenCreed · 10/07/2018 23:05

For the first half of your post I thought YABU and ridiculous.

But you’re right. Move, change your name, start a whole new life.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 10/07/2018 23:06

Oh my!😬 that’s grim op! How old is dd?

Tessliketrees · 10/07/2018 23:08

You, your daughter and the TA all sound brill.

But yes. Emigrate.

TheThirdOfHerName · 10/07/2018 23:08

The teachers and TAs are probably exhausted and in need of something to make them smile.

I think you should hold your head high and brazen it out.

Maybe even get yourself a smiley vulva badge to wear for school drop-off.

Wolfiefan · 10/07/2018 23:09

Or a hat shaped like a mooncup! Grin

needmoresleepnow · 10/07/2018 23:11

DD is 10.

Loving the idea of a Smiley Vulva badge pmsl

I'm a ta and that would put a smile on my face for the rest of the school year, please don't move you have really brightened up someone's day, I'm in a year 4 class and some of the things they come out with in phse it's very hard to keep a straight face.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 10/07/2018 23:17

Bloody andrex gave me a papercut today. I forgot to bring in a towel to my shower so shouted dh, just as i was having a swatch at my cut in a handheld mirror as dd1 and 2 trekked in too. What the feck are you meant to say/do?

EndOfEternity · 10/07/2018 23:26

🤣

MsJaneAusten · 10/07/2018 23:27

Staffroom gold! You’ve made their day. Walk in with pride tomorrow Grin

Apple23 · 10/07/2018 23:32

Your daughter sounds really sweet; one of her classmates is worried about something personal and she's reassuring her by saying it's ok, so normal my mum does it.

In the context of "things that children say in school", it's nothing so shouldn't merit any mention. Hold your head high tomorrow and be proud of your girl.

StinkyVonWinky · 10/07/2018 23:33

Brilliant. Can I suggest a knitted pink pussy hat as an end of year present for that TA? Grin

powershowerforanhour · 10/07/2018 23:33

Now you've started it you have to follow through...cultivate a really full on second wave image. Have fun ;-)

sleepytiger · 10/07/2018 23:34

😂

SouthWestmom · 10/07/2018 23:34

Really ? A TA in primary suggested that?

PandaG · 10/07/2018 23:39

My DS, at a similar age, was mightily unimpressed with one of his puberty/sex ed lessons. He was being taught about periods, and pads and tampons were mentioned, but nothing else. He said something like 'but that's not all women can use, my mum doesn't want to throw things away, she uses a mooncup, you just tip the blood out and use it again'. I was pleased he knew my reasons, and mildly amused that the reaction he reported from his teachers meant they had no idea what he was talking about!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 10/07/2018 23:40

Noeuf our pshe teacher suggested that when I was 10 so 20 years ago, I know it’s still suggested now. I’m a huge fan of the idea of learning and understanding your body from pre teen so am pleased to hear it’s stull suggested

OP your DD sounds fab Grin but is there any chance she could attend secondary school a year early to save you the embarrassment Wink

PandaG · 10/07/2018 23:40

Absolutely reasonable a ta in primary suggested it....plenty of girls will be starting their periods, and may want to use tampons, and even if they are not is reasonable to suggest they get to know their bodies.

Bobbiepin · 10/07/2018 23:42

Emigrate. But only so your DD can share the hilarity with more adults.

@noeuf why not? It's about girls becoming familiar with what their bodies look like, being comfortable with that and being able to notice if anything has changed. It's most certainly a good thing.

needmoresleepnow · 10/07/2018 23:44

PandaG I was considering asking school if they mentioned mooncups as I thought DD may mention that I use one and the reasons why. Obviously feeling less inclined now Blush

Just whip your mirror out to check your makeup at drop off tomorrow op Grin

SouthWestmom · 10/07/2018 23:45

Im just really surprised. I know teen magazines suggested it back in the day, just never at my primary.

Lalliella · 10/07/2018 23:52

DD aged about 5, when a tampon rolled out of my pocket on her aunt’s sofa and DNiece aged 8 asked what it was: “oh Mummy puts those up her fanny”

DS aged about 10 came home from school with a picture of the body labelled up with the changes in puberty, including “public hair”
