to wonder what the real reason for them missing the christening is?

The BBC are reporting that the Queen and D of E are not going to the christening of Prince Louis but say it's not due to ill health.

Why else would they miss it? It doesn't make sense to me.

Given the temperatures and their ages, I think it's very wise they aren't all trussed up today in fancy clothes. The D of E has retired and the Queen is recovering from a virus too. They are both in their 90s now and should be both be retired and enjoying life in one of their country estates. They've earned it.

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 09/07/2018 17:04

But I think she was in Norfolk at the weekend and travelling back today. She may have had a morning/lunch engagement in Norfolk, which would have made it a bit of a rush to get back, get changed and get over to St James's.

LIZS · 09/07/2018 17:05

Maybe they had better things to do?

lifeisabeachsometimes · 09/07/2018 17:12

It is my understanding that the duke is being treated for cancer.

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 09/07/2018 17:16

It is my understanding that the duke is being treated for cancer.

Which, if true, is private and confidential information, and none of our business.

alligatorsmile · 09/07/2018 17:18

Well if her madge is anything like me, she'll be in a pair of flappy shorts and a vest, sitting in front of a fan with her legs up to get some cooling breeze on the royal foof, while eating crisps and trying to hear the telly over the fan noise.

lifeisabeachsometimes · 09/07/2018 17:24

QuinquiremeOfNineveh I hope you will also wish him well?

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 09/07/2018 17:41

I would wish anyone well who was having medical treatment for any reason, if they choose to tell me about it. If they prefer to keep it private, they have an absolute right to do so, and no-one else has the right to invade their privacy.

CoolCarrie · 09/07/2018 17:45

They will be eating poached eggs on toast, on trays, in front of the telly, wrestling over the remote to watch the shit storm in the government or the tennis. Phil the Greek will be laughing his socks off at the lot of them at Westminster and Queenie will be saying “ off with their heads!”

QuinquiremeOfNineveh

Chill out. This is a forum. People talk and speculate on here. You sound so patronising and self-righteous.

EdithWeston · 09/07/2018 18:15

They have clearly said it is not for health reasons. I don't think they would have been that categorically explicit if it were not true (and they do disclose a lot about their health when it causes missed engagements).

They are slowing down. Co-ordinating Royal diaries is often quite complex anyhow, and if they want to ease the schedule, sometimes some things have to give. Though I am surprised at them missing a family event. But the announcement says it was all agreed with the Cambridges, which suggests (but is less explicit/categoric) that it's not a sudden/acute issue.

We have to get used to seeing a lot less of both of them, I think.

LynetteScavo · 09/07/2018 18:57

I think Monday is an unusual day for a christening...I also think if the Queen is too busy to go to a great grandchild's christening she should stop working so much.

For most people their age, a grandchild's christening would be a highlight of their year. But then the Queen isn't most people.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/07/2018 18:57

Maybe they didn't want to risk a piece of 7 year old cake on their geriatric stomachs?

lifeisabeachsometimes · 09/07/2018 19:03

QuinquiremeOfNineveh What a strange post. No one is 'invading' anyone's privacy. At his advancing age it would be stranger if he didn't have some of the problems seen in old age. It is a democracy may I add, and in this country it is acceptable to discuss anything including the health of the royal family. We don't want or need a forum censor thank you.

JellyBears · 09/07/2018 19:12

Because their old and it’s very hot

susurration · 09/07/2018 20:04

Grin @sockunicorn nailed it!

lifechangesforever · 09/07/2018 20:10

Same reason elderly grandparents won't be coming to our DD's christening - too far and too much at their age, and they don't have have full time jobs to boot!

Birdsgottafly · 09/07/2018 20:48

""Do Great Grandparents HAVE to go to Christenings ?""

When they are Supreme Governor of the Church of England, it would be nice to show her faces. Or if they enjoy a Family get-together.

But the Queen has always carried out what she considered to be her duty and Family comes second. So, she probably just can't manage it, at her age.

The press are continually hopping that they get enough pictures of what will be "the Royal Family's last day out together", so her being there does change the dynamics.

AmazingPostVoices · 10/07/2018 22:17

Lynette that’s a fairly hysterical statement all round.
