To think that marijuana shouldn't be legalised?

Just that really, I'm a 19 year old & honestly given all the experiences people I know have had using it, it seems like a horribly unhealthy and dangerous thing to legalise?

I've never smoked it or taken any drugs myself so I guess I don't know everything, but it has been proven to make people depressed, lazy & unproductive! (Insert mental image of 30yr old living in parents basementGrin)

What's everyone's opinions? If you believe it should be, can you explain why? And vice versa :) thanks!

I wouldn't want it legalised because the modern stuff warps the brain - it's not like the stuff The Beatles puffed back in the day and even then they were in their 20s when they started on it, brains mostly fully developed. Unlike teenagers.

That said, that's why some want it legalised - to regulate it so the stuff you obtain is not skunk.

Don't smoke it anyway, so I don't have a dog in the fight.

KittyPerry77 · 09/07/2018 14:58

Totally agree. We've just freed ourselves from passive tobacco smoke so why enable others to stink us up with their weed?

adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:00

@KittyPerry77 I agree! Surely it's unfair to make others breathe it in? (Assuming people will be allowed to smoke it outside coffee shops and walking along the street etc)
I smell it sometimes when I'm near the beach, cigarette smoke drives me nuts too.

OP posts:
CheshireChat · 09/07/2018 15:01

Nope, it stinks and the smell gives me a headache so I really don't want it to be more widespread.

adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:01

@NewspaperTaxis I just don't understand why it's being legalised when it's not something we 'need' as human beings? I get that the oils can heal medical conditions so I'm quite supportive of alternative therapies involving cannabis oil, but there is really no excuse for weed generally? Like cigarettes.

OP posts:
adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:02

@CheshireChat The smell makes me feel nauseas too.

crazycatgal · 09/07/2018 15:05

As someone with a neighbour that stinks out the hallway with weed and drug drives, no it shouldn't be legalised. The smell is vile.

RoboJesus · 09/07/2018 15:06

Legalisation would cause less death's and less crime. It has had promising results thus far as a medication, especially in children. Although I wouldn't touch the stuff it's clearly detrimental to keep it illegal.

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 15:07

Maybe if it was legalised we would get away from the drink culture that wrecks town centres at the weekend

9amTrain · 09/07/2018 15:07

I agree. And it has a fucking horrible smell.

SickOfSitting · 09/07/2018 15:09

If you're thinking of the weed people smoke to get spanked then yanbu. The weed with low THC levels is completely different and doesn't get you "stoned" as such, it is great for anxiety and the oil is good for helping with things like epilepsy.

I have tried both, the first is just horrible and leaves you feeling completely out of it and not in a good way and possibly gives off the side effects in which you describe . The latter is nice and made me feel much calmer with less anxiety and I didn't feel "stoned" at all.

There was a program on it a while back and it was interesting.

Justanotherlurker · 09/07/2018 15:12

but it has been proven to make people depressed, lazy & unproductive!

I think you will have to back up that research, as with alcohol there are certain people which it effects and the recreational side dictates their life.

The old propaganda of Marijuana isn't bearing fruit since the explosion in the 60's it has been used by large portions of the population with no ill side effects whatsoever. The war on drugs pretty much across the globe has never worked as people will and always have looked for mind altering substances.

Making it legal like other countries are doing would enable us to regulate it, generate tax income and cut out some low level crime.

Considering the UK is one of the largest exporters of medicinal cannabis it is slightly hypocritical that the millions spent on cannabis by those who do smoke it ends up going to the black market. If it was already legal and sold in various size bags Spice would not have taken off.

Pebblespony · 09/07/2018 15:13

It is a waste of police/garde time to have something this common and benign illegal and it gives massive amounts of money to organised crime as they are the only suppliers.

DobbyisFREE · 09/07/2018 15:13

I think it should be for quite a lot of reasons

  • People are going to do it anyway, it's incredibly common and efforts to stop it are not working
  • We have an underfunded police force, I'd rather they focused their efforts on worthy causes (This is fairly subjective though)
  • As PP said, a legalised substance can be regulated and controlled so it's not horribly strong or mixed with anything dodgy
  • If it were legal, people would go to licensed places instead of drug dealers so they would no longer be funding the criminal activities that go hand in hand with drug procurement.
  • They would surely put a minimum age on it so children would struggle more to get hold of it
  • The places that sell it would have to abide by certain rules - be nowhere near schools etc.
  • It could be highly taxed and massively improve the economy
  • People with severe mental health issues that worsen when taking it could be properly treated as they would no longer be afraid to admit that they smoke it.
  • If people that wanted to smoke it had somewhere to go, we might stand a chance of getting them out of public places where there are children - parks etc. (Places where it is legal generally have bans on smoking it in the streets).

Basically I think it is definitely going to happen and there's nothing that can be done to stop it, what we can do is regulate it and make it unavailable for children and as safe as possible and keep it confined to specific areas.

9amTrain · 09/07/2018 15:14

A couple of my friends smoke weed daily. You can tell. They say it's not addictive and has no effects but you don't even need to ask if they smoke it...

Justanotherlurker · 09/07/2018 15:16

I just don't understand why it's being legalised when it's not something we 'need' as human beings?

Human beings have been using mind altering substances since the day dot, that is not a robust argument for it keeping it illegal.

Shortstuff08 · 09/07/2018 15:18

I just don't understand why it's being legalised when it's not something we 'need' as human beings?

When has this ever been part of making something legal?

adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:25

@Shortstuff08 I get what you mean :) I thought as soon as I'd posted it I would get called out on that statementGrin definitely should proof read next time!

DaisysStew · 09/07/2018 15:26

Here’s the thing though - a huge amount of people already do smoke it. Being illegal hasn’t turned people away from it, and smoking it doesn’t make people lazy anymore than having a drink socially does. Abuse and reliance on it can though - the same as with alcohol.

I think given the state of the economy I’d much rather it was legalised. Not only to raise money from sales and tax but also to take the pressure off the police. Most people would rather go to a legitimate shop and purchase it which would stop street dealing and in turn stop easy access to harder drugs like cocaine (which most people who sell weed also sell and offer to the people they sell weed to).

JJS888 · 09/07/2018 15:29

I think whileitsillegal, smuggling it across the border should not be ignored, whoever did it.

FuckingTwattery · 09/07/2018 15:30

There was a long thread about this not long ago.

Some people were totally missing the point complaining about their neighbours/DP/friend smoking.

It's not about smoking. That's not what they are talking about.

They are talking about the oil for medical use.

They are going for both assuming one (the smoking kind) will be turned down, and rightly so, so they can get the oil pushed through.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 15:33

Actually I think drugs should be legalised and legislated.

Not because they’re a good thing, but because it would cut the dealers off at the knees and solve an awful lot of turf war/gang war problems which blight entire areas.

Booze and cigs are legal, the government makes tax off them and takes it out of the hands of black market dealers.

If drugs were the same it would stop them killing whole areas!

adoggymama · 09/07/2018 15:34

@FuckingTwattery that's interesting to know! I totally support the oil for medical use by the way. Just not the smoking.Confused

Alcohol is far, far worse than weed.

halfwitpicker · 09/07/2018 15:37
