To let rip at my neighbour tomorrow?

Very very grumpy right now.

Live in a busy and somewhat noisy street but kind of used to it. However, around 9.45 tonight an alarm of some kind started going off in a nearby house. Its piercingly loud even with the windows shut.

I went out after an hour and tracked it down to an empty house down the street that's being done up. None of its windows are open but it can still be heard even over the TV. Can't see a burglar alarm anywhere and it's not a fire alarm.

I'm knackered, kids finally got to sleep but I'm now raging. I've opened the windows again cos I can still hear it if they're shut and it's too hot anyway.

Bleep Bleep Bleep....Bleep bleep fucking Bleep. He's gonna get a frigging mouthfull when he turns up in morning Angry

Just got home and had a (polite) word. Someone must have already said something as an electrician was already onto it, said the electrics keep shorting out and when they come back on it resets everything (???).

He seemed to think it was funny though, he did say 'sorry about that' but smirked and chuckled while he did so. Then said at least it was a one off so I pointed out it wasn't (described the 5am day) and he just laughed again and turned away. Pffffttt!!!

Lethaldrizzle · 09/07/2018 16:38

Wow he sounds like a total twat

Redundancy1 · 09/07/2018 17:15

OP what does that mean though - what was the alarm that went off? Was it a burglar alarm?

have you got a rape alarm? I have one and it's properly ear splitting. If he behaves like this again, take your alarm, set it off and say "imagine listening to this all night".

Tomorrowiscancelled · 09/07/2018 20:08

I've no idea Redundancy1 all he said was that bit about the electrics and didn't clarify when I said 'some type of alarm coming from this house'.

I was even going to suggest getting his number to alert him if it did it again but the laughing and turning away kind of threw me tbh.

Maybe when you've got a bit more energy go talk to him

I didn't think the rape alarm would that bad, so when I tested it for a few seconds (ordered online) my poor neighbours came running. This was in flats though. It will give him an idea of how annoying it.

Gosh, the temptation to activate and then shove the alarm through his letterbox.... Horrible git.

DPotter · 10/07/2018 17:52

Do ask for his number, so that if / when its starts again you can let him know ;)

tillytoodles1 · 10/07/2018 17:56

When I read the thread title, I thought your neighbour had farted at your place That really made me laugh!

AtrociousCircumstance · 10/07/2018 17:57

Tell him that next time you’ll alert the council and they will break in and bill him for the locksmith.

He sounds like a prick.

Kerala2712 · 10/07/2018 17:57

I think we live in the same street- someone’s house alarm going off between 4-6am this morning. Have total sympathy.

mummyretired · 10/07/2018 17:59

I once had a burglar alarm that went off automatically when the power was disconnected, it sounds as if that is what's happening here. It did not have to be set for that to happen, it went off every time there was a power cut and had to have the code entered to stop it.

I can see the thinking behind this because I have been burgled after having the phone line cut (before the days of mobile phones), but I'd report to Environmental Health at the local council if it keeps happening.

babyno5 · 10/07/2018 18:19

Yes OP one must state that the post is lighthearted!
I said “heartbroken” in a previous post and was told I needed to see my dr “for my mental health” 😂😂

kaitlinktm · 10/07/2018 18:49

I would definitely go back and ask for his number - bloody inconvenience him if it happens again. Wouldn't be surprised if he wouldn't give it to you though - after all, he won't want to be woken up by a pesky alarm will he?

ton181 · 10/07/2018 18:51

Ask for their phone number so it theres a repeat then you could call them and let them know. What a great neighbour you would be :)

MermaidHead · 10/07/2018 19:05

Call the Police..honestly..if the alarm is causing a public nuisance they will contact the owner of the property and tell them to get it sorted.

RenoSusan · 10/07/2018 19:09

Shut the power off at the main connection. That should shut it off.

springydaff · 10/07/2018 19:41

and he just laughed again and turned away.

Ooh I think I may have ripped his scalp clean off his head at that.

Fucker

springydaff · 10/07/2018 19:42

Definitely follow this up with relevant PTB and make the fucker pay for his insouciance.

FermatsTheorem · 10/07/2018 19:57

Not that I'd recommend this, clearly, but back in my student days we had an alarm go off on our street - horrendously loud. After about 4 hours of it (was round about the time everyone was stressed out with finals), we'd had enough. My housemate shinned up the drainpipe and smashed it to bits with a hammer. We got a round of applause from the people in the house opposite.

(It was a very rough inner city area with a sky-high burglary rate, and the police would not attend burglar alarms, so they were utterly pointless and were the bane of everyone's life.)

Gojustgo · 10/07/2018 20:02

I have wax ear plugs and cushioned ear protectors for these situations. When wearing both I could sleep through my own fire alarm.

Which admittedly isn't safe. : )

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 10/07/2018 20:34

I wonder if we live near one another, OP - alarm started going off here late last night and went on until this morning. If I'd had an axe to hand I would have smashed that fucker to splinters and lightheartedly gone on my way Wink

Rebecca36 · 10/07/2018 20:52

It might be a burglar alarm, many of them are well concealed.
All you need to do is telephone the police and tell them there is an alarm going off at No whatever. If it is a burglar alarm they will know what to do.

If it isn't, back to the drawing board.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 10/07/2018 21:16

I had a neighbour like this in my previous house.
They had a very sensitive alarm and it would go on for about half an hour, then pause for just long enough for you to start to relax, then it would start again. Usually it would continue in 10 minute bursts with brief gaps.
It was utterly and completely annoying. One of my other neighbors got his work number and would keep pestering him until he came back to turn it off. Happened quite a few times.

AngelsSins · 10/07/2018 21:22

I can sympathise OP, I live in London and we get a lot of people from neighbouring roads parking on our street. The other night a car alarm went off in our street, must have been about 2am, super loud, echoing round the close for about an hour before anyone turned it off. Then about an hour later, it happened again, and again, took them ages to turn it off so must have been someone from a neighbouring street. Really annoyed me! It’s hard to stay calm when listening to that noise.

Sweetpea55 · 10/07/2018 21:35

What about if you made a note of his numberplate. Couldn't the police trace him by this if it went off again on? Maybe that's a stupid idea. Just was trying to think of something to help

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/07/2018 21:51

PolkerrisBeach I would say you must be my neighbour, except I was super nice and polite when I mentioned the super annoying car alarm that kept going off day and night. Eventually I found their phone number and rang them at six in the morning to tell them that their alarm was going off as they couldn’t actually hear it from their house. He was a bit shirty at being phoned at that time of day until he heard me out and then he was mortified. He’s so sweet, bless him, I didn’t have the heart to moan. Grin
