A really plain smiley face is actually kind of sarcastic like "ha...ha...ha..." or "glad you've decided to be such a cock today " to me! Which is why I tend to use 😂 or 😊 instead of 🙂 to show happiness!

I'm not sure how common my perceptions are though! 😂

I suppose the plain smiley being posted depends on what has been said.

I stuck a friendly smiley on the end of a message to my 40something friend as she's very "down with the kids" and thinks I'm a luddite. She replied asking "did you mean to be sarcastic?" I was a bit baffled.

When I got my lovely chickens, I changed my WhatsApp status to 😍🐔.

One of my young work colleagues thought someone had been messing about with my phone and drew it to my attention. It took a moment for the penny to drop.

👊 is supposed to be a fist bump like a greeting but myself and everyone else I know uses it as a punch emoji
