😏 (smirk emoji)

I understand it has an ‘ulterior’ meaning? Is that correct?

user7469322 · 08/07/2018 18:41

@percheron67

You’re welcome lol!! Your definition of BMW was going round when I was in primary school, late 80s/early 90s!

Resident mumsnet late stage millenial here for all your emoji decoding needs 😂😂 guffaux if you mean the pink squares after the PP that said finger, ok and then mouth, those aren't meant to be there! Sometimes when you use emojis on platforms that don't really support them like mumsnet, or you use Apple emojis when the person reading has android, it will put a colour square after any human based emojis to denote which skin colour the emoji had. Its not part of the joke basically 😂

@argumentativefeminist

Please offer your take on the original emoji in question!

Amazingly Grace. Thanks again. My excuse for being so out of touch with idioms, emoji etc., is that I am one of Mumsnet's MUCH older fans! One thing though, I am having fun trying to catch up.

guffaux · 08/07/2018 18:54

ah! - when I've seen them on various threads I thought they might be a hormone patch or an elastoplast, but could never work out the message lol - no wonder! Grin -on the message upthread I thought they might be a condom wrapper Confused

user7469322 · 08/07/2018 18:57

@guffaux

Top comment!! 😂😂

argumentativefeminist · 08/07/2018 18:58

AmazinglyGrace I only ever use it sexily and I think that's a consensus amongst most of my age group (20ish!)

I do /sometimes/ use it as an ironic smirk but only in contexts where it's very clear and to people who will clearly understand the irony! (E.g. as an accompaniment to an ironic Boris Johnson joke to a fellow leftist who knows very clearly I'm not sexually attracted to Boris 😂)

DobbyLovesSocks · 08/07/2018 19:07

I have heard that the 💩 emoji was originally meant to be a chocolate ice cream pic used to mean when something was 'sweet'. For example 'he has a sweet ride'. It then got misinterpreted as a poo

Or is that an urban myth?

I do get confused by emoji/symbols and tend to stick to a key few 😂🤣😉☺️🙈💕❤️&👌🏻

argumentativefeminist · 08/07/2018 19:26

This is what I've always believed Dobby but I suspect we'll never know the truth!

"Emoji began in Japan back in 1999, but to understand the inclusion of poop in its trailblazing series of graphics one has to go somewhat further back. In Japanese, the word for poop (unko) starts, coincidentally, with the same “oon” sound as the word for “luck.” Moreover, there has always existed a long tradition of poo-centric worship in the country. Before the digital age, it was still fairly common in Japan to look to deities known as banjo-gami, or privy gods, by keeping figures on top of or underneath the loo. Gold poop charms are popular good luck tokens in Japan, as are sweets that resemble that Smiling Pile of Poop emoji."

Oh Boris Johnson is FAF 😏!!

OP posts:
argumentativefeminist · 08/07/2018 19:45

Amazingly - BoJo's a total CMILF - Cabinet Minister I'd like to... 😳😏😂😂

(I genuinely do use this acronym sometimes.)

PerfectSunflowers · 08/07/2018 19:47

I've always taken it to mean 'meh'

argumentativefeminist · 08/07/2018 19:50

Meh for me is usually 😑😕 but some people use 😒 which is kind of an inverted 😏

PerfectSunflowers · 08/07/2018 19:54

😒 for me is quietly annoyed.

😐 is 'well there's nothing to say about that'

PerfectSunflowers · 08/07/2018 19:58

I rarely use emojis to people I know except DH and on funnily enough on here so 🤷🏼‍♀️ lol.

argumentativefeminist · 08/07/2018 20:00

The really interesting thing about emojis from a linguistics/cultural point of view is that they really do mean lots of different things to different people! And yet some people and groups of people manage to communicate very effectively with them - it's pretty amazing when you think about it!

user7469322 · 08/07/2018 20:28

@argumentativefeminist

I love that acronym! Consider it stolen!

emmaluvseeyore · 08/07/2018 20:46

You can search using emojis in urban dictionary as well. It’s quite useful!

user7469322 · 08/07/2018 21:01

@emmaluvseeyore

This is what Urban Dictionary reckons the smirk emoji means:

An emoji you give a girl or boy when you want to climb into bed with them for more than a cuddle

SneakyGremlins · 08/07/2018 21:04

Young millenial here - 😏 is "Why don't you come round in a bit 😏"

🍆 Is just a dick isn't it? Not black or white.

🍆💦🍑 Is self evident Grin

chrysalis7 · 08/07/2018 21:15

I just googled search (via image) and it's a DISCORD smiley.

www.kisspng.com/png-smirk-emoji-discord-smile-emoticon-emoji-1197994/

It looks like a slightly smug 'I know I'm right' smiley to me. But apparently it denotes 'discord.' Which means conflict and hostility ... Confused

GimbleInTheWabe · 08/07/2018 21:17

There's a way to get your iPhone to audio describe all the emojis.. it's in the accessibility section I think. He calls 💩 'smiling pile of poo' and it's really great

SneakyGremlins · 08/07/2018 21:18

Discord is also a chatting app! Like Skype but for gamers.

Tink1990 · 08/07/2018 21:26

Why is Smile the worst? I use that at the end of most of my posts just to be friendly!
