Bryony vs Ottilie

Posting here for traffic, have name changed...we are totally stuck between these two names (baby is already here) and im almost too close to both of the names now and can't think properly.

So, my question is - is Bryony a lovely feminine, strong, underused name, or, is the reason it's underused because it's just not that nice, and more along the lines of Brenda/Angela/Sheila etc (it's 981 or something on the list for 2016 which really surprised me...what's wrong with it is what I'm asking...why is it sooooo far down the list)

And.... Is Ottilie really pretentious? I think it's absolutely beautiful, girly but strong, unusual but not unheard of, but is it only to be used by private school girls?

Please be gentle....like I say, I can no longer see the wood from the trees (possibly due to hormones) and have a 1 week old gorgeous little baby girl with no name 😢

I thought Ottilie was a Dutch name as I know a few children of that name with Dutch parents but it’s become quite surprisingly common in England now. For that reason I’d opt for Bryony if that was my only other choice.

Idontmeanto · 07/07/2018 23:15

They are both lovely, but I do prefer the Briony spelling.

fruitbrewhaha · 07/07/2018 23:19

Bryony doesn't sound s like a strong women to me. Ottilie is nice, Id go with Ottilie.

Fluffyrainbows · 07/07/2018 23:19

I know 3 Bryony's (all ages 25-40) and think it's lovely. They are all called Bry though as a nickname.
I also know 3 Ottilie's all aged 3 and under. 1 known as Tillie and 2 as Ottie. I like both names, I guess you need to decide between what is currently a bit of an older classic or a name that's rising in popularity.

MrsMarigold · 07/07/2018 23:22

Bizarrely we know four girls called Ottilie nn Ottie. I prefer Bryony.

Sleepyslops · 07/07/2018 23:30

I'm confused as to how Ottilie is pronounced Otilia

Enidblyton1 · 07/07/2018 23:31

OP, you’re not going to get anywhere asking for opinions on here - just chose the one you like best! They are both nice girls names. Trust your own judgement!

Marcipex · 07/07/2018 23:32

Ive known Bryony as a flower name ever since I could read, but I still think it sound like Brian.
Ottillie is okay, I only know one, though that is spelled Otterlie. Yes, really, I checked.
Do you like Bronte? Or Estella?

AhhhhThatsBass · 07/07/2018 23:33

Lots of Ottillie’s where I live and they tend to get shortened to Ottie. I prefer it to Bryony.

Enidblyton1 · 07/07/2018 23:33

Sleepy, Ottilie is a very old fashioned German name (not French as some people suppose). The German pronunciation of ‘e’ is an ‘uh’ sound.

Pepper123123 · 07/07/2018 23:39

I have a family member called Ottilie, I think it's lovely.
But so is Bryony.

Probably worth bearing in mind that Ottilie will probably be shortened to Tilly and Bryony to...Bri?

AllThoseDirtyWords · 08/07/2018 00:01

Bryony - no. Sorry it sounds like to brine/pickle something to me.
Ottilie is lovely strong name so I would go with that personally. She could be called Otti for short which is cool!

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 08/07/2018 00:22

@racecardriver off topic but how is Atonement low-brow?!

OP - not keen on either name but of the two, would choose Ottilie. I dislike Bryony. Agree with others that it's staid and a bit 'horsey.'

Lisabel · 08/07/2018 00:47

Ottillie is beautiful. It's personal preference but I don't love the name Bryony- I think it's a bit like Bridget.

Lisabel · 08/07/2018 00:48

Also you could shorten to 'Tillie'

Ilovetea33 · 08/07/2018 01:06

Also surprised that somebody considers Atonement low-brow.

FatSally · 08/07/2018 01:21

I'm afraid "Otterly Butterly" was the first thing that came to my mind when I said it out loud

I'm now saying 'Otterly Botterly' to myself in an Irish accent and I can't stop laughing 😂🙈

garethsouthgatesmrs · 08/07/2018 01:26

And.... Is Ottilie really pretentious? I think it's absolutely beautiful, girly but strong, unusual but not unheard of, but is it only to be used by private school girls?

My gut is that you prefer ottilie so go with that. I have never heard it before so wouldn't associate it with anything.

If you are genuinely unsure toss a coin but your OP suggests you prefer Ottillie so just go with it.

Bryony is also lovely (although my auto correct substitutes it for Beyonce!!)

We went through the same sort of thing when my DD2 was born and it took us 4 weeks to name her. If I was honest with myself we had a name on day one but I just needed time to acceppt it (we had changed our mind from original choice once she was born). In your heart you know what her name is.

AllThoseDirtyWords · 08/07/2018 01:55

I'm afraid "Otterly Butterly" was the first thing that came to my mind when I said it out loud

Oh Shit! Forget that as well, think of something else!

Yura · 08/07/2018 05:16

Ottilie - only if you are sure she will never live in a german speaking country. horrendously old fashioned with a "parents trying waaaay to hard" component to it. would definitely trigger a "poor child" response.
Bryony is lovely

Yura · 08/07/2018 05:22

Ottilie: kind of child that will have lessons in 5 instruments and dance from 6 months old, parents know they 112th in line to the throne. clearly giften and ralented, parents will tell you at each oportunity and will go to complain to the board of governors if the teacher disagrees.
There is a group of names associated with that sort of parents, Ottilie is one of them

noitsachicken · 08/07/2018 05:59

Don’t know why I read these sort of threads, upsets me that so many poeple think the name we chose is so awful.

Narya · 08/07/2018 06:13

Bryony is lovely.

Ottilie is not great imo and will get continually misspelled and mispronounced by people.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 08/07/2018 06:14

Yura's a bit harsh but not completely off the mark. Ottilie (I do always wonder how people pronounce it - correctly it is Ott-il-i-uh) has been completely missed out by German old lady chic. There are tons of little Claras and Friedas and Idas and Johannas and Lottes. I know of no Ottilies. I find its hipster popularity in the UK baffling. It's a nice name but all I can think of when hearing it is Elective Affinities, and IIRC she was a bit of a drip in that.

I like Bryony. People are silly with their 'brine' etc comments. Try to ignore.

Chocolatecake12 · 08/07/2018 06:21

Ottillie is really pretty. I know of one baby ottillie and the minute I heard it I thought how nice it was.
I think it’s the name you prefer too - everyone will have an opinion whether good or bad. Go with what you and your dh like.
