Bryony vs Ottilie

Posting here for traffic, have name changed...we are totally stuck between these two names (baby is already here) and im almost too close to both of the names now and can't think properly.

So, my question is - is Bryony a lovely feminine, strong, underused name, or, is the reason it's underused because it's just not that nice, and more along the lines of Brenda/Angela/Sheila etc (it's 981 or something on the list for 2016 which really surprised me...what's wrong with it is what I'm asking...why is it sooooo far down the list)

And.... Is Ottilie really pretentious? I think it's absolutely beautiful, girly but strong, unusual but not unheard of, but is it only to be used by private school girls?

Please be gentle....like I say, I can no longer see the wood from the trees (possibly due to hormones) and have a 1 week old gorgeous little baby girl with no name 😢

They are both a bit private school girl imo. How about Romilly as an alternative?

hammeringinmyhead · 07/07/2018 21:34

Funny then that a poster 2 posts after yours misspelled it...

noitsachicken · 07/07/2018 21:34

And I don’t think this thread will help! I did a smiliar one, and had people telling me she would be called Biriani!

Just go with the name you like the best.

TroubledLichen · 07/07/2018 21:35

Both lovely names but I especially love Ottilie.

humblesims · 07/07/2018 21:36

Not helpful but I think they're both lovely names. I would probably choose Bryony over Ottilie. Ottilliiee is hard to spell and sounds a little bit like utterly.

KittyMcKitty · 07/07/2018 21:37

There’s an awful lot of Ottilie’s / Ottiline’s around aged from 10 downwards.

That said it’s a nice name and I see nothing wrong with popular names.

Racecardriver · 07/07/2018 21:37

I went to an all girls private school with two bryonys (Bryonies?).

Both were nice enough. Hate the name though after reading Atonement (reading list so no choice, I wouldn't willingly read something so low brow, please don't jusge me).

RobinHumphries · 07/07/2018 21:39

I like Bryony

BettyBettyBetty · 07/07/2018 21:39

Both lovely! I prefer Ottillie.

BrutusMcDogface · 07/07/2018 21:39

Ottilie is horrid and pretentious. Bryony is nicer.

BrutusMcDogface · 07/07/2018 21:40

I also heard an ottilie on the telly (one of those CBeebies shows scout families) being referred to as "otts". Hideous!

Wildlingofthewest · 07/07/2018 21:42

FWIW - I think the name Elodie is pretty 😊

LakieLady · 07/07/2018 21:44

I love Ottilie. There used to be a fantastic singer called Ottilie Patterson when I was a kid and I used to wish my name was Ottilie.

Bryony not so much. I've known several Bryonys, and none of them were very nice, tbh. And one of them was called Bry for short, which always made me think of Bri-Nylon.

TheMagnificentEthel · 07/07/2018 21:44

I’ve heard Otilia before and prefer it to Otillie.

Word of advice, if you ask for opinions on a name you will get horrible comments and you can be put off every name in the world. Just ask your partner what they prefer. If no preference toss a coin.

If you wish it had been tails, pick the other one.

WaffleFroggy · 07/07/2018 21:45

Both were on my shortlist and are lovely names! I know a 30 yr old Briony who gets 'Bri' as a shortening and a toddler Ottillie who is known as 'Otti'

trojanpony · 07/07/2018 21:45

For me, Both are a bit Hmm
Bryony is the better of the two

Isis1981uk · 07/07/2018 21:45

They're both pretty but I would choose Ottilie :-) Unusual, pretty, not chavvy etc

Southernstars · 07/07/2018 21:47

Bryony is one of my favourite names.

MollyHuaCha · 07/07/2018 21:53

Ottilie.

fatbottomgirl67 · 07/07/2018 22:09

Ottilie is lovely. Bryony sound like Brian to me sorry

NordicNobody · 07/07/2018 22:10

I know a Bryony that I dont like very much so hard to be unbiased. I think if I didn't know her then I'd like the name. Ottilie is very sweet and I do like it, but I'm afraid "Otterly Butterly" was the first thing that came to my mind when I said it out loud, and now that pp has said about the Irish accent I can't unhear that! But I do think they're both nice names and almost anything can have the mick taken out of it at school (I knew a boy called Matt once who everyone called "matt brown the boring paint"!) No matter the name someone will be creative enough to use it as an insult if they really want to. So just pick your favourite and go for it :)

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/07/2018 22:15

If I had to choose, I would go with Bryony. Really don't like Ottillie - sorry! Sounds awful and the sort of name that will cause issues for her forever.

A pp mentioned Elodie - I do like that!

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 07/07/2018 22:18

I’m going Bryony

CruCru · 07/07/2018 22:18

I like both.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2018 22:19

They are both a bit private school girl imo. How about Romilly as an alternative?

And Romilly isn’t.. 😂

Bryony is far better than Ottilie which screams frilly dresses and ringlets to me.
