To have snapped at this dog owner?

Sat by the fountain in town and a bloke comes along with an enormous dog - think St Bernard - off the lead. Dog is sniffing all over me and I don't like dogs so ask him politely if he can call it over. He laughs and says it's just being friendly.

Dog then wipes a mouthful of slobber all over my trousers Envy

I admit I did snap a bit and use the words "fucking dog" and "no common decency".

Was I BU? Blush I wouldn't normally confront him but I have a bit of a dog phobia and I really don't like them. And these were freshly washed trousers, only been wearing them 20 bloody minutes..

Yanbu snapping and farting would have been highly appropriate.

I can't bear dogs that jump all over people and owners who think it's absolutely acceptable because 'it's ok he/she is just being friendly' ..... I don't care, I don't want your dog charging at me, slobbering on me and covering me in dog hair.

DrDougieHowserMD · 07/07/2018 16:09

I'm a dog lover. My family used to breed and show a large and slobbery breed.
The dogs weren't allowed to go up to anyone. Not even us owners wanted dog drool and hairs and stink on us!

There was once a neighbour who always had her Westie running loose on our shared lane. It would run up to everyone and jump up with muddy paws all over our legs to the tune of "He's just being friendly" and "Well if you don't like dirt you shouldn't be living on a farm".
Almost every day I went to work after wiping mud off my skirt and tights with baby wipes I kept in the car just for that.

Then I was on my way to a funeral one day, all dressed up, and she finally got the message when I held out a shovel that had been leaning against a fence while the dog ran the length of the lane towards me and said, "If that fucking thing comes near me again, I'll knock the little bastard into the next field!" Admittedly I wasn't in the best mood (funeral) and I wouldn't have actually hit the dog but she wasn't to know that. It worked. She kept it under control after that.

I don't want smelly dog on me any more than I want random people's kids sticky fingers on me.

@Charolais

There is something very ‘off' with people who hate dogs

Can you explain that? Hmm

Years ago I was pushing DC1 along in his buggy when a passing labrador, who was on a lead, leaned into the pushchair & gave DC's face a big slobbery lick. Owner didn't apologise even though they saw it happen, so I gave her a piece of my mind for allowing her dog to slobber all over my child and got a foul mouthed rant back. I adore dogs and have a couple myself, but allowing them to slobber all over people is not on.

beanaseireann · 07/07/2018 16:14

Dog owners can be really stupid.
I love dogs. The other day a couple were walking back from the supermarket with their 2 dogs off lead.
Bother dogs ran out onto the road into the path of oncoming traffic. The man ran to get the first dog, he then didn't notice that the second one had run out onto the road. I shouted from my car to alert the girl he was with that the 2nd dog had run out behind her back onto the road.
I shouted out of my car windows 'put your dogs on leads.'
My dog had been killed a few years back.
The man came over and threatened me. Told me he knew the road ( cult de sac) I had driven out of and he would come and get me. Sad
I was in a state of shock.
The dogs, motorists and their passengers were put at risk as was the owner running onto the road to retrieve the dogs.
I rang the police because of the threat.
Sadly they arrived too late and the idiot couple had disappeared.
I'm scared though that he will come and do damage to me or my car/ house.
Would he have preferred his pets were killed ?

LakieLady · 07/07/2018 16:16

I'd like to know wtf he was thinking of taking a big dog into a town centre in this heat. I'm surprised the dog didn't jump into the fountain to cool off.

And yes, slobber is pretty revolting. It's one of the reasons I've never had a Newfoundland, despite loving everything else about them.

Alicatz66 · 07/07/2018 16:19

YANBU ... the " he's only being friendly " brigade are knobs .. not everyone likes dogs .. I really like them but I don't want them jumping all over me and slobbering .. some dog owners are so thoughtless ... I've had one jump up my dry clean coat and put mud all over it and all the owner did was beam at the dog !!!!!

rinabean · 07/07/2018 16:19

Some dog owners are trying their hardest to make all of them look bad. You've even got some on here trying. YANBU at all, he was. I don't like dogs, and I don't expect them to know to behave, but I do expect their owners to keep them under control!

Branleuse · 07/07/2018 16:22

I fucking hate dogs jumping on me or slobbering on me that havent been invited. Its gross, and it makes me itch and makes my eyes water.

Im not a dog hater, but im not a dog lover either. I will tolerate your dogs as long as you dont let them bother other people

starzig · 07/07/2018 16:38

Seriously charolais. There are many people that have a dislike for a certain animal or insect. I personally can't see how people hate wasps for example. But certainly doesn't mean there is something off with them as you put it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 07/07/2018 16:51

Charolais, rtft, it's the unwanted dog slobber that people here are objecting to. I love kids, but if one came up and wiped its runny nose on my legs, id not be impressed.
I got pinned up against the wall by the wall coming out Of work yesterday, it was a very muscular (too powerful for the young woman walking it) breed, it too was being friendly, no, it's hackles were up and it's teeth bared. When she did drag it away, I was shaking.

ALongHardWinter · 07/07/2018 18:30

Bloody hell please don't start me off on the 'I snapped and farted' again. Grin

Beansontoast1 · 07/07/2018 21:56

@sneaky being bitten by a dog aged 2 isn’t a good enough reason to still not like them today Hmm haven’t you heard of facing your fears, especially as dogs are everywhere?! If you have kids don’t make them scared of them too Grin

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 07/07/2018 22:03

I don't trust people who don't like dogs either. But saying that I would have been annoyed at being slobbered over when I had shown no sign of wanting to engage with him. You shouldn't just let them go up to people.

TheGreatCornholio · 07/07/2018 22:07

oh good, time for the weekly dog thread!

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 07/07/2018 22:14

being bitten by a dog aged 2 isn’t a good enough reason to still not like them today

I was attacked by a rooster as a toddler. I have no memory of it at all. But I’ve been terrified of birds, butterflies/bats/anything that flaps for my entire life. I was only told as a teenager what had happened to me. My parents didn’t want to give validation to the fear. Sadly the phobia persisted anyway and I still can’t cope with anything flappy being anywhere near me. Don’t worry, My children aren’t afraid of birds- think I’m hilarious Grin

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 07/07/2018 22:22

I once got shouted at by a horrible man who threatened to hurt me. Doesn’t mean I’m now scared of all men. It’s a tired old cliche and quite frankly I’m surprised that otherwise perfectly intelligent people still seem to adhere to it.

Anyway. YWNBU to shout at the owner. His dog may be friendly but it doesn’t know any differently. He does, he was being very rude. And as someone said, very stupid taking a heavy coated dog out in the heat. Dogs have died recently from over exertion in this heat. He was a complete twat.

Willow2017 · 07/07/2018 23:24

Ffs nobody has ro like dogs just as nobody has to like rats or cats or pizza. Doesnt mean there is something wrong with them. Just cos you like something doesnt mean everyone else has to. The world would be very boring if we all liked exactly the same thing.

Dog owner is an arse and gives proper dog owners who know how to train thier dog a bad name. Friends breed st bernards and they are lovely but god the mess!

crazycatgal · 07/07/2018 23:39

YANBU, I keep encountering a lot of shitty dog owners.

I've been tangled up and nearly tripped over by idiots using extending leads and when I'm walking my dog (on his lead) other people's dogs run over to us and the owner makes a poor attempt to call them back.

I don't think anybody can be arsed training their dogs anymore. My dog has poor recall so I don't let him off the lead - it's simple.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 07/07/2018 23:45

You need some electric dog repellent devices. This owner needs to be arrested.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/07/2018 23:52

Urrghhh dog slobber.Envy definitely not envy.
YANBU. Im not really a dog person. I only like them when theyre cute puppies
He s should have called it over. When you told him to. Supposing you were phobic. Not everyone likes dogs.
Imagine if you'd have said to him.
"Excuse me will you call her over" and her name actually was Rover. Grin
I'll get my coat.Blush

Beansontoast1 · 08/07/2018 01:57

@walkingdeadfangirl electric dog repellent devices? You’re a lovely person aren’t you HmmHmm

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 08/07/2018 02:03

I think you were well within your right to snap, he should have called his dog away from you rather than let it continue..

I'd have felt the same as you about the trousers, I like dogs but wouldn't want dog slobber over them, I wouldn't feel clean wearing them once that was on them

TheGreatCornholio · 08/07/2018 10:50

@walkingdeadfangirl

Calm down, dear.

MinorRSole · 08/07/2018 11:03

People who don't control their dogs drive me mad and it's actually quite easy to see how people can become "anti dogs".
We've had a lot of picnics this last month and nearly every single one has been interrupted by a dog just bounding across the blanket, often helping itself to food.
I adore dogs, I'm heavily involved with breed rescue and have at least 1 foster at any given time plus my own 2 - definitely a dog lover. I love them so much that my own are at home where it's cool instead of pissing everyone off at the park!

Some dog owners are utterly selfish and clueless and that's what these threads boil down to every time. If people don't control their dogs then there will always be people who don't like them because they become a nuisance.
