To be totally freaking out about global warming?

TakesTheCake · 06/07/2018 18:50

I know global warming is real, so not asking if it is unreasonable to “believe” in it. But I am wigging out so badly, and I don’t see anyone else around me or online worrying about it through this awful searing heat and lack of rain and record temperatures all over the globe.

I am freaking out about future water scarcity, food shortages, nature, fires... have I got this out of proportion? I am so doom-and-gloom about it all, even when it is cool enough to sleep I lay awake worrying about my three kids’ futures environmentally. But my fears are not echoed by those around me.

Just me? Being over the top?

OP posts:
LucyAutumn · 06/07/2018 20:35

I feel the same OP, it terrifies me! Sad

0lgaDaPolga · 06/07/2018 20:37

Yanbu. It makes me worried for my children’s future too. It’s quite scary how hot it is this summer

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2018 20:39

It sounds an extreme response.
Make changes to your life or campaign for wider change? But don't lie there worrying at night.
And this extreme heat? It's not a sign of the apocalypse!

specialsubject · 06/07/2018 20:39

so do your bit. No more kids, use less, waste nothing. easy on the travel, the plastic , the water use etc etc etc.

it all helps.

HyacinthsBucket70 · 06/07/2018 20:45

My dad commented today that this weather is how summers used to be. And I do remember summer in the 70s growing up was very much like this. We've grown so used to seasons blending into one another that we don't realise the damage that's already occurred from global warming.

Adelie0404 · 06/07/2018 20:47

I'm with you, it is very very frightening.
I don't hold out much hope for governments (Especially our current collection clusterfucks) doing anything about it - until it is too late.

Ceruleanblue0 · 06/07/2018 20:48

I feel the same. I think about it every day.

I do wonder how so many people just ignore it, do they think we’ll manage to sort it out?? Not at the rate we are going, it will just get worse and worse.

corrianderisthedevil · 06/07/2018 20:49

Me too! If our summers keep getting warmer how long can life on earth survive?!!! Dramatic sounding I know but quite right to be concerned

Accountant222 · 06/07/2018 21:46

Calm down, summers in the seventies were like this and really snowy winters

Floods123 · 06/07/2018 21:57

Here we go again. We do not have a global warming problem. We have a population problem. In my lifetime world population has increased sixfold. Economic activity generated by too many people creates global warming. We need to stop reproducing at this rate. No one talks about it as population issues do not create experts on high salaries in Universities and Govenments. If we do not sort this out then the Earth will solve it for us.

OliviaBenson · 06/07/2018 22:01

Agree with the pp. it's one of the reasons we have decided not to have kids.

Disquieted1 · 06/07/2018 22:05

Average temperature now:
London - 5C January, 19C July
Edinburgh - 3C January, 15C July

So if nothing changes, 100 years from now Edinburgh will be as warm as London.

Totally freaking out about this is a little OTT. Direct your energy towards doing something about it.

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 06/07/2018 22:14

Yes especially since having DC. I try to do my bit with recycling and making environment friendly choices but I know that is not enough. We are tied into a system that exists on trashing the resources and the life on planet. I don’t believe it’s going to be good enough to tell my grandchildren when they’re food refugees “But we used Ecover”. I don’t see how a significant enough difference can be made soon enough and yes it does keep me awake at night.

youropinionspleease · 06/07/2018 22:18

I am with you OP!

So much so, that in October, I start a degree in Environmental Science. I am hoping to go into conservation and sustainability. Hooray! Planet Earth!!

loveablether · 06/07/2018 22:29

I know it's a bit off topic but people that litter or don't recycle properly infuriate me. I was hovering over recycling bins at work and my boss said "just stick it in any bin, it all gets burned in China anyway" I can imagine him throwing glass In the landfill.

I freak out about landfill..weirdly ott.

missymayhemsmum · 06/07/2018 22:52

I agree with you, it's terrifying.

Canshopwillshop · 06/07/2018 22:59

Summers in the 70’s and 80’s were often like this though and last years sumner was nowhere near as warm as this one.

Wolfiefan · 06/07/2018 23:01

It'll soon be wet and miserable again! Don't worry.

Mawalls · 07/07/2018 03:42

What is with people saying don't have kids, we are below replacement and have been for a very long time

It is not this country you need to tell and you wont tell those you should

RedDwarves · 07/07/2018 04:37

Mawalls Something tells me that 4 children in the UK consume more than 4 children in a developing country, though. It's not as simple as saying, "But we have a replacement/below replacement level birth rate, while the birth rate is higher in Africa etc!" because it comes down to consumption per capita. There is no way you can refute that we consume more in the Western world than those in developing countries.

So yes, it is socially irresponsible to have more than two children in the West, considering how much of a strain we place on finite resources. Global warming has not been exacerbated by developing countries; it has been the West's doing. Only now can we point fingers at China and India and talk about their behaviour - but it hasn't been that way for the 250 years that the West has been industrialising.

StormcloakNord · 07/07/2018 04:48

Should have thought about this before having 3 kids.

Sorry, but true. [Confused]

megletthesecond · 07/07/2018 04:58

It's not just you.
My allotment is parched and it really brings it home how millions of people rely on what they can grow themselves. If my harvest fails we don't go hungry, it just means I just get naffed off and have to spend more in the supermarket over the summer. It's not life and death, but it would be to people in some countries.

your DS will probably do something in environmental engineering. Heaven knows it'll be needed.

Penners99 · 07/07/2018 05:15

Nope, do not believe that it is real. Too many people though, that I do believe in.

WeirdScenesInsideTheGoldmine · 07/07/2018 06:13

Nope, I’m worried too, really worried.

I have nothing else to add but just fe so uneasy and I’m glad i found this thread!!

InfiniteSheldon · 07/07/2018 06:20

Every summer in the 70's was like this and a far few in the 80's it's great to have them back and nothing new
