To be totally freaking out about global warming?

I know global warming is real, so not asking if it is unreasonable to “believe” in it. But I am wigging out so badly, and I don’t see anyone else around me or online worrying about it through this awful searing heat and lack of rain and record temperatures all over the globe.

I am freaking out about future water scarcity, food shortages, nature, fires... have I got this out of proportion? I am so doom-and-gloom about it all, even when it is cool enough to sleep I lay awake worrying about my three kids’ futures environmentally. But my fears are not echoed by those around me.

Just me? Being over the top?

People are switching to a plant-based diet in their droves. It’s healthier, better for the environment and better for animals.

I've made the changes in lifestyle that I'm prepared to make, but am thoroughly enjoying the lovely summer in the meantime.

Train101 · 07/07/2018 13:32

Yes, but there's also other ways to tackle it that are easier.
It's easier to have extra tax on fuel and car travel, invest in good public transport, and tax airplanes and large polluting ships then it's to force a country to go vegetarian.

Also, regarding plane travel, it's not the Smith family going on a once a year two week holiday in the sun that's the problem. Frequent fliers, like business men and women and the super wealthy who travel all the time, are the ones clocking up more air miles and the ones who should be targeted to pay more for the environmental damage of aviation.

Yeah, I do agree with this.

It's why I'm always a bit Hmm at the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio preaching to the plebs about climate change. I mean, his industry must have an absolutely enormous carbon footprint!

It's just weather, op, enjoy it while it lasts, because I reckon it will change at the end of the month just in time for the school hols. A few weeks of beautiful sunny weather shouldn't have any one running around crying that the sky is about to fall in. We have had some truly appalling summers in the last 15 years or so. Remember summer 2012 when it never stopped raining?
We've waited a long time for a decent summer- it will soon just be a memory.

PickAChew · 07/07/2018 13:43

It's Japan that is getting the weather to worry about, at the moment. Reports of over 3' of rainfall in 48 hours.

Pmsl @ the “harsh” winter!

Some of you don’t know you’re born 🙄

lubeybooby · 07/07/2018 17:31

it's not just global warming, it's climate change

one hot summer does not mean global warming. The world is gradually warming up on average, bringing about climate change, increased flooding and storms etc

but yes there are lots of record temperatures about recently, including Oman having a record LOW of 42c

RoadToRivendell · 07/07/2018 17:32

It's true that people in LDC consume less, but consider India and China, which used to be LDC. Now they're modern countries with enormous populations, all of whom want cars, AC and meat.

This will happen as countries are lifted out of poverty -their childbearing patterns moderate, but they're left with 70 years of a huge, increasingly affluent, ageing population.

So this argument isn't terribly comforting.

The80sweregreat · 07/07/2018 19:55

It is scary but it’s on the back burner.
It had to be otherwise you’d go mad!
I do worry but there’s not much anyone can do.
