Mine’s just told me that when DH and I have a daughter (not anytime soon it would seem) I will have to stop dying my hair as it sets a bad example but it would be fine if we had sons.
She has a daughter, and has been dying her hair since 1972... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙄

Does anyone else’s Mil say rediculous things you have no idea how to respond to or just mine?

Regale me with strange MIL stories so I don’t feel so weirded out 😂😂

commonarewe · 06/07/2018 17:22

And it doesn't say "funny" things. It says "stupid" things. Not sure you'd get away with that for any other group.

I didn't realize our "professionally-offended" quotient was running low this month. Thanks for the healthy top-up!

Urbanbeetler · 06/07/2018 17:23

Yes but not as a coin, unless it was minted before 1816. In which case she gave something probably worth much, much more than £1.05 which was the value of a guinea. You could sell something for a guinea until 1971 but would be paid in a pound and a shilling/5p

Neverender · 06/07/2018 17:23

MIL asked if my daughter was "clean" yet.

At four months old...

BunsOfAnarchy · 06/07/2018 17:24

My mil was amazing! God rest her soul. Miss her so much.
I think this thread should be treated lightheartedly. Theres been plenty men bashing threads before too. I dont take either too seriously, just a bit of fun and here is a safe place to vent surely.

Oh and @RachaelCatWhisperer i read your Clemantis as clitoris and now i think i need therapy BlushGrin

drnectarine · 06/07/2018 17:28

'MIL have been the butt of jokes for years. Why is that? Why not FIL or BIL? '

Because a certain type of person likes to keep older, more knowledgeable women in their box. The hard of thinking are happy to join in.

Whirlytastic · 06/07/2018 17:30

Older, more knowledgeable women Grin Grin Grin

drnectarine · 06/07/2018 17:33

Thank you for making my point so succinctly.

BigCarrot · 06/07/2018 17:36

I see the offended by everything brigade are out in full force Hmm

I think the title was because OP was just telling her own story about her MIL. A lot of MILs come out with stupid and borderline offensive shit so OP was asking to share. What's the big deal? It seriously puts people off bothering to come on here. I've literally read about 10 posts just today of people being offended by stupid shit.

SpandexTutu · 06/07/2018 17:36

DM - that rule that you should not sleep with your partner before marriage is the only thing that separates us from the animals.

drnectarine · 06/07/2018 17:39

'I see the offended by everything brigade are out in full force'

So says Bigcarrot clearly offended by her views being called into question.

WooYa · 06/07/2018 17:39

My MIL tried telling me DH has 'special needs'Hmm he's just not that bright...BlushHmm

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2018 17:43

"A lot of MILs come out with stupid and borderline offensive shit"
More than other people? What about when they are being doctors or waitresses or gardeners- can you spot them then by the stupid and borderline offensive shit they come out with? When does it happen? On the wedding day?

If people are stupid and offensive they are stupid and offensive whether they are MILs or not.

How about a "stupid things that come out of old women's mouths?" "Daughter's mouths?"Or even (although obviously this will be an empty thread) "Dil's mouths?" Would any of them stand?

Bibbitybobity · 06/07/2018 17:44

Oh my goodness Confused
I bloody hate Mumsnet now, sooooo many offended people . I think some people must get a buzz from expressing how offended they are. Am I missing some sort of annual award ceremony for the most offended person online?
The OPs intentions seem lighthearted.
Is Points of View still on? Highly recommend for all you professionally offended people out there.

Thesearepearls · 06/07/2018 17:44

I really cannot stand it when women are misogynistic

It's letting the side down

The point you are missing is this will (being as you most likely have children) be you some day

Let's see how funny you find it then ...

BigCarrot · 06/07/2018 17:45

So says Bigcarrot clearly offended by her views being called into question.

Not offended and they're not my views, just taking general consensus from the endless MIL threads on here. Just pointing out its yet another thread where people have to come on and make the OP feel like crap because they can't read a title then move on with their lives

Mightymelon · 06/07/2018 17:46

PLEASE STOP BEING OFFENDED
I LOVE MY MIL. She was just being weird.
I’ve reported the post. I’m sorry

OP posts:
HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 17:47

so it's OK to make a thread about fathers or FIL< but not about MIL... right.... Grin

It's worth starting MIL thread just to see the uproar.

RachaelCatWhisperer · 06/07/2018 17:47

@BunsOfAnarchy Shock

pigsDOfly · 06/07/2018 17:50

There's a very strong chance that these MILs that are coming out with stupid things were coming out with stupid things when they were young women as well.

I don't think stupidity is the preserve of MILs, they are not some sort of separate sub-human, sub-intelligent species.

There are an awful lot of stupid young women around, and stupid men, young and old.

applesisapple5 · 06/07/2018 17:51

Two days after I'd given birth (8 weeks ago) my MIL told me she was really pleased everything had gone well because an absolutely horrific thing that I won't repeat had happened to a baby being born elsewhere in Scotland.
It was the most horrific story you can imagine for anyone, let alone in my hormonal state. I had visions and nightmares for weeks, I don't know what she was thinking.

Osirus · 06/07/2018 17:52

It’s fine OP, the vast majority see the funny side. Just because your MIL might have said something silly it doesn’t mean she’s a nasty witch and you hate her.

Some people need to chill out a bit (or at the very least hide threads they find offensive).

abbsisspartacus · 06/07/2018 17:55

Are you sure you want to marry him (her son) he seems to be getting more out of this than you Confused should have listened to her on that one

Train101 · 06/07/2018 17:56

So the stupid things your husband said is also an issue then?

ReginaBlitzkreig · 06/07/2018 17:57

My MIL generally talked sense. It is FIL who says daft things.
Hard to give examples as FIL just keeps up a stream of consciousness muttering of nitwittery 24/7.

Lizzie48 · 06/07/2018 17:57

This one is about my DM. She's a very intelligent woman, PhD in Linguistics (achieved in her 70s), and loves to tell us how much she's always liked Geography and maps. She also loves to navigate on car journeys. But the funny thing is that she invariably gets us lost. She's always saying things like 'That sign is in the wrong place.' Grin
