To ask if you had a drink while pregnant

So before anyone judges I'm not talking about going out and getting hammered I am meaning the occassional glass of wine with dinner.

I'm currently pregnant (13 weeks) and just really in the mood for 1 with dinner tonight. I had with my last pregnancy (maybe 3 glasses on different nights throughout the whole time) however it was not until I was much further down the line.

Just wanted to see others opinions really, I know the NHS is strickly zero, however it wasn't that long ago that it was 1 or 2 units once a week.

Yes. dc now 14 and 11. At the time the guidance was 1 - 2 units 1 -2 per week. I had a glass of wine every weekend. Kept me sane!

freegazelle · 06/07/2018 15:20

DM is GP and said advice changed because they couldn't trust women to just have one, rather than any new compelling evidence.

Moominfan · 06/07/2018 15:20

Went for a mouthful of white wine spritzer and the baby kicked. Couldn't do it went back to lemonade. Not worth the risk

pallisers · 06/07/2018 15:21

No with my first one (22 years ago) but with the other 2 I did have an occasional small glass if we were out for dinner- I think not during the 1st trimester though. I was in the US for my pregnancies and never noticed any disapproval.

grace7 · 06/07/2018 15:21

I personally never did but I know a lot of people do have the occasional glass of wine / half pt of beer who have perfectly healthy babies.

TowerRingInferno · 06/07/2018 15:22

One small glass of wine a week after 12 weeks.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/07/2018 15:22

Yes, when pregnant with ds1 22 years ago guidelines were quite vague. 4 years later with Ds3 guidelines were being tightened up and advice was changing.

glintandglide · 06/07/2018 15:23

“Went for a mouthful of white wine spritzer and the baby kicked. Couldn't do it went back to lemonade. Not worth the risk”

Sorry Mominfan but the connecting of those 2 things together to make them a risk is bonkers 😭

Smurfybubbles · 06/07/2018 15:23

I had the odd glass of red wine through my recent pregnancy! Mind you I had a small glass of red on NYE took me hours to drink it and was convinced I had a hangover the next day Confused

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 06/07/2018 15:23

Yes I had a glass if wine a couple of times a week but only after about 15 weeks. Couldn't stomach the thought before. An if I ever tried to have one sip more than one lass my body would shout yuck!! Until right at the run of each pregnancy when I was due I had a couple of glasses at Christmas and my sisters wedding (2 different pregnancies)

I think your body tells you what t wants, what it couldn't have etc. And you can trust those instincts.

TheLionRoars1110 · 06/07/2018 15:23

Yes I did. 1-2 units per week are fine.

Yes, all three. Not in the first trimester, but probably one glass of wine a week on average.

KeithLeMonde · 06/07/2018 15:27

Yep, I had the odd half glass of wine here and there. That was within the guidelines when I was pregnant (kids are now teens).

Darkstar4855 · 06/07/2018 15:27

Yes, small glass of champagne for our anniversary at 10 weeks, also had a glass of pimms and lemonade at a festival at 17 weeks. Now 19 weeks and would consider having the occasional half of lager or small glass of wine on a social occasion as there’s no convincing evidence that this causes any harm to the baby.

Fresta · 06/07/2018 15:32

I had a whole bottle the day before finding out I was preggers. It was fine. I also had about one glass a week throughout. It was fine.

NordicNobody · 06/07/2018 15:32

I had a few sips from dps drink on a few occasions but never a full drink of my own. But I don't think it'll do any harm, I just have quite bad anxiety in general and was too paranoid to breathe for most of my first pregnancy!

Katedotness1963 · 06/07/2018 15:33

Yes. I didn't realise I was pregnant till 17+ weeks. So had beer or wine most weekends.

Ebeneser · 06/07/2018 15:33

I have personally chosen not to, and wouldn't judge anyone that did only have one drink (I'd judge them if they got hammered though!).
I have 0% beer though when I've had the urge to drink. That seems to hit the spot!
I've decided that when I have had this baby, that I will be drinking Guinness - for the iron (honest..)!

InteriorLulu · 06/07/2018 15:33

Got absolutely hammered with DD before I knew I was pregnant. During the rest of the pregnancy had very little to drink and waited until after 12 weeks before I had some. The guidance then was one or two units a week, which I stuck to.

With DS I went off alcohol before I knew I was pregnant and didn't want any until I was much further along. I had the odd glass from time to time.

LawDegreeBarbie · 06/07/2018 15:35

I've had two glasses of red wine. One at a funeral and one at a birthday. I also have alcohol free beer in the fridge but that doesn't count.

fourmileswide · 06/07/2018 15:35

I had the occasional half of guinness now and then. Very nice it was too.

I know it's quite old but this article is quite interesting - no evidence you'll be doing any harm at all. And don't get me started on the cheese!

GruciusMalfoy · 06/07/2018 15:37

I probably had enough before I found out to last me for the next 8 months. I chose not to have anything after I realised I was pregnant.

notfromstepford · 06/07/2018 15:37

I did with DS1 before I knew I was pregnant but then didn't at all for the rest of the pregnancy or with DS2.

However, if I had fancied the odd glass I would definitely have had one.
