To ask if you had a drink while pregnant

So before anyone judges I'm not talking about going out and getting hammered I am meaning the occassional glass of wine with dinner.

I'm currently pregnant (13 weeks) and just really in the mood for 1 with dinner tonight. I had with my last pregnancy (maybe 3 glasses on different nights throughout the whole time) however it was not until I was much further down the line.

Just wanted to see others opinions really, I know the NHS is strickly zero, however it wasn't that long ago that it was 1 or 2 units once a week.

Yes without worrying at all. I was pregnant before the guidelines changed. I probably had 2 glasses of wine per week from week 25 onwards (when the nausea eased up).

Whirlytastic · 06/07/2018 15:03

Small glass of wine when I fancied it. No more than one. Had several small glasses of wine a week I guess through both pregnancies.

MustBeThursday · 06/07/2018 15:04

Half a glass at Christmas with DD1 (I was nearly 6 months gone)

None with DD2 but I only really drink at Christmas and I was only 7 weeks then and nauseous at the thought!

cholka · 06/07/2018 15:04

I had the odd half or glass of wine. Read that expecting better book by Emily Oster, it's very good.
Basically one drink is fine but three isn't. They don't trust people to follow that so they tell you none at all.
I get sick of advice 'on the safe side' whch seems ok on a case by case basis, but when taken in the whole it makes pregnancy into some kind of puritanical abstinence challenge!
A friend who got hammered before she realised she was pregnant was told by MW that basically it might kill a few cells, but if the pregnancy continues then it's not going to cause lasting harm. To actually cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome you have to really go for it on an ongoing basis I think.

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2018 15:06

Only before I knew I was pregnant with DC1. After that, none at all in any of my pregnancies.

DickTERFin · 06/07/2018 15:07

I had half a Guiness and black when I was about 36 weeks pregnant with DS1. It was at an Xmas drinks thing and I didn't want to go as I felt terrible but it perked me right up and I didn't feel guilty, it was barely enough alcohol to have an effect on me never mind the baby.

Didn't drink with any of the others but that was more to do with not having the desire/opportunity rather than guidelines. I did eat runny eggs though.

kikibo · 06/07/2018 15:07

Yes. One 10cl glass of wine (=+/- 1 unit) and 2 33cl glasses of 6% Orval trappist (between 1 and 2 units per glass). Not together obviously.

I decided to wait until the 1st trimester was over and to limit any alcohol I wanted to one glass a week like my mum. I also drank slowly. Though that was because I didn't know what to have after haha.

DD is fine.

BlueSapp · 06/07/2018 15:09

No, never, I just thought, Its not worth it and I can easily go without.

LaurieMarlow · 06/07/2018 15:10

I had about 6-7 units in each pregnancy. All in second/third trimesters.

Oh and I got hammered about 13 days post ovulation with DS2 as I was so convinced I wasn't pregnant (had been trying for a while).

OllyBJolly · 06/07/2018 15:11

None!

I couldn't even think about alcohol, tea, coffee or chocolate when I was pregnant. I'd want to want a cup of tea but just couldn't, if that makes sense. Never liked chocolate again.

BeardofZeus · 06/07/2018 15:11

I drank maybe a combined total of 10 units over my first trimester, not including the hen do when I didn’t know I was pregnant. Then throughout the second and third I have a small glass of wine with food on special occasions (plus a smal glass of fizz for the toasts at weddings) and have recently been having a bottle of low alcohol cider over a weekend during this nice weather. Most supermarkets do an excellent non alcoholic fizzy and tonic water with ice and lime goes down a treat even without the gin!

I also read the advice and looked deeper into it and discovered that small amounts of alcohol drunk slowly with food are metabolised by the liver before there is any risk of placental crossover- the hepatic portal does a good job! I am more than happy with my decision, and believe i would make the same again in subsequent pregnancies Smile

thecraftyfox · 06/07/2018 15:12

I vomitted pretty much constantly during the first 25-30 weeks of both pregnancies but once i could finally keep anything down I would have a bottle of beer once or twice a week. I also read expecting better. My gp recommended the book actually

abitoflight · 06/07/2018 15:12

I did with both mine 19 and 15 years ago
Glass of wine 2-3 times a week

glintandglide · 06/07/2018 15:12

Yes 2 &4 years ago- a small glass of wine or 1/2 a lager once or twice a week from about 16 weeks. I knew I was pregnant immediately so didn’t have anything before 16 weeks

ComtessedeLancret · 06/07/2018 15:13

Yes once in a blue moon if I felt like it, normally for little celebrations I’d have a small glass of something (Christmas, Wedding anniversary etc) but half the time I’d have a sip or two and just go “nah.. not into this” lol and tip it out though.

DryHeave · 06/07/2018 15:13

One glass a week in my third trimester. And I even, shock horror, looked forward to it.

Thymelord · 06/07/2018 15:14

Yes, happy with my choice, would do it again.

n0ne · 06/07/2018 15:14

Plenty before BFP at 7ish weeks! Then the odd half glass of wine or beer here and there but chronic heartburn put me off and nothing tasted quite right. I was drinking champers an hour after DD put in an appearance, though!

WinkysTeatowel · 06/07/2018 15:16

Yes, read Expecting Better by Emily zoster, she concludes that you are safe to drink up to a small glass of wine (slowly) once a week in the first trimester and once a day after that.

I'm currently on holiday and have been having a small spritzer in the evening (not every night) and quite happy with my decisions.

TroubledLichen · 06/07/2018 15:17

Yes, 1 small glass of wine a week from about 20ish weeks when I wasn’t feeling too sick. My NHS GP told me the new guidelines were nonsense because women aren’t trusted to be sensible and as long as it’s not in the first trimester and no more than 1-2 a week then it’s fine and that’s what she did with all 3 of her pregnancies.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 06/07/2018 15:17

Yes, but only probably 3 or 4 mouthfuls of wine throughout the whole pregnancy. I didn't deny myself alcohol, I just found that when it was in front of me, say with a fancy meal, I didn't actually like the taste very much.

I did get glared at by several people though, for daring to be pregnant and have a glass of wine in front of me.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 06/07/2018 15:18

One small glass of wine a week throughout both pregnancies. I was confident (and still am) that I was taking no risks whatsoever.

And I very much enjoyed those glasses of wine!

Foodylicious · 06/07/2018 15:18

I have had a couple of small glasses of Bailey's this pg.
Think I had a few sips of wine last time.

Embarrassingly I have had cravings for beer and wine at random times of the day.
Thankfully they have been fleeting and I've just ignored them Grin

kitkatsky · 06/07/2018 15:19

A mouthful of champagne when I got engaged at 15 weeks and half a glass of wine when I severely craved it around 7 months. Both times gave me the worst heartburn and stopped me doing it again.

Foodylicious · 06/07/2018 15:19

Oh and I don't even like beer. Or usually drink much wine at all...
