To buy an air conditioning unit?

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 14:28

I don't think I've slept well for 2 weeks. Fan in the bedroom just moves hot air around. I've even tried the 'ice in front of the fan' technique with little success.
Our local Homebase has air con units in stock, £250 Every year when the weather gets warm DH and I have the discussion and don't end up buying one but this time it looks like this weather is here for a while.

AIBU to buy the bloody unit and languish in my (cool) bedroom?

This is quite an old thread now, but if you’ve landed here looking for ways to beat the heat this summer, we’ve recently updated our best air conditioner page with guidance and advice on whether they’re right for you. We hope it’s useful.

Yabu unless you buy me one too.

My bedroom is like a greenhouse. I'm tempted to sleep outside.

Babynut1 · 06/07/2018 14:32

We’ve been the same, pondering for years then it cools so we don’t bother.
Last weekend, we finally did it. Bought a unit and it’s AMAZING!!
Upstairs in our house was unbearable and the kids haven’t been sleeping well. The air con has made an amazing difference!!

DO IT!! x

imonaplane · 06/07/2018 14:32

We just got one - it's brilliant!

Bubblysqueak · 06/07/2018 14:34

Had one for years and love it. We call it our dalek!

BlueSapp · 06/07/2018 14:34

I bought a tower fan, blows cool air not just moving the air around and was only £60 keeps our bedroom cool all night.

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 14:34

See @Babynut1 this is my thoughts, years we've been procrastinating. It's probably made worse by the fact we've just come back from holiday and had air con in the room so to come back to my oven of a bedroom is horrid.

I have one reserved for collection. I just need to convince DH that it's a really good idea.

Which ones do you have?!

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 14:36

This is the one I was looking at, an Arlec:

Mostly because it's the only thing in stock for miles 😳

I got mine about a month ago after a finding the hot spells last year too much, but was initially worried I wouldn’t use it.
Well, I’m jolly glad I have it now! £280 well spent imo. It’s in our room and I’ve been putting the children in there at bedtime with it on then moving them later as their room was disgusting.

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 21:10

Thanks all for that little push. Sat here in an ice cold bedroom. Best decision I've finally made 😁

Does this need to be vented outside? I’m in a ground floor flat so concerned about having to have the window open to vent it! TIA x

HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 21:17

if it helps you sleep, why wouldn't you?

I hate them and only use them in hot countries to get rid of insects, but your comfort at night is what matters.

applesandpears56 · 06/07/2018 21:18

Yes! Glad you bought it. Ours was the best decision we made - we put in children’s room and then move after it’s cool to ours.
Yes you have to put tube to outside then block the rest of the window with a curtain or something. If you are worried about security just have on for a few hours- once a room is cool it doesn’t tend to heat up again

MrsMotherHen · 06/07/2018 21:19

how do they work?

SlimGin · 06/07/2018 21:21

Omg congrats! I've just sent the link to dp for the same one Wink

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 22:33

This does need to vent outside yes, from what I've read the ones that don't are just big fans with ice in them.
Ive got it through the window, it's not pretty and were we not moving I'd probably find a neater way but right now I don't care Grin

It's noisy, but no worse than the fan on full u don't think. The dog has taken up residence in here as well. I turned it off for half an hour to listen to something on the TV and the temperature went from 20 to 31 within twenty minutes so it's certainly effective.

Whether other models are better /cheaper I don't know, as I say this was in stock and finding an air conditioner in a heat wave is bloody hard Grin

CaseStudyResearch · 06/07/2018 22:35

We have just started sleeping outside. Blow up mattress and a duvet on the balcony is bliss.

TurnipCake · 06/07/2018 22:37

Woohoo! You won't regret it, OP Grin

We have to get ours down from the loft only for a few weeks in the year, but it's worth it to walk into a heavenly cold room

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2018 22:41

It's a dehumidifier as well so I reasoned it would be useful in the spare room 😁

I love a cold bedroom anyway, in the deepest of winter the window is wide open so this heat at night has been awful. Did consider sleeping outside but we've got very forward foxes and a couple of fat badgers who I didn't much fancy sharing with.

SacharissaCrisplock · 06/07/2018 23:04

We bought ours after the hot spell last year and now you'll have to prise it out of my delightfully cool hands. It really wasn't cheap but, by god, it was worth it.

IceCreamIceCream · 06/07/2018 23:11

DH is gearing up to have actual aircon installed. Is this madness? Room is 30degrees and have new baby and toddler who isn’t sleeping due to heat. The cost isn’t too bad but I can’t help thinking ‘aircon in England?!’ Will I be sitting smug next year for having it done? DH comes from a part of the world where is it par for the course although do wonder if he is motivated by the idea of a shiny new toy....

Tiredemma · 06/07/2018 23:15

We have air con in our bedroom. Currently blasting out cold air now ( I'm actually freezing under the duvet)

We love it

HelenaDove · 06/07/2018 23:16

i need one of these for my sweatbucket of a social housing flat.

And i think tempers are getting frayed because of the heat as well Loads of arguments and fights going on outside (not me and DH) if this fucking weather goes on much longer this housing estate is basically going to turn into a version of Stephen Kings Needful Things.

Ninoo25 · 06/07/2018 23:20

If you have the money I’d definitely do it. Sleep is very important. We have a fan for every bedroom and one for downstairs that gets moved around depending on where I am! We’ve had them for years and get them out in summer and even in winter if one of us has a chest infection (I swear it seems to help!) If I had the money I would definitely buy air con and wheel it out every year when needed x

Ninoo25 · 06/07/2018 23:21

IceCream IceCream if you’re getting it properly installed as opposed to a mobile unit, you can get ones that heat as well as cool so it would be useable all year round 😊
