Why do people do it? I just don't get it. AIBU?

99 out of 100 will be prescription glasses. Short sightedness not really a rare medical condition...

In summer I wear them all round the supermarket etc or I can't see what I'm buying. I'm sure some people think I'm posing ( but it's fairly obvious my glasses aren't cool and neither am I!)

Prescription sunglasses - I've sat watching tv at 11 at night wearing mine Blush

chestylarue52 · 06/07/2018 19:59

If I’ve been out all night and I need to hide behind them?

AlbertaSimmons · 07/07/2018 14:38

But why do people think sunglasses are posy? Surely they are functional? People of all ages, shapes and sizes wear them. It's bizarre to think that all of those people are posers. This thread reminds me of the takeaway coffee one - people came onto that to declare that walking along the street carrying takeaway coffee is posing, and even worse if you're doing it while wearing sunglasses. Very odd mindset.

bicback · 07/07/2018 14:41

Sounds like a good idea as you don't have to make eye contact with strangers sitting oppositeSmile

DuchyDuke · 07/07/2018 14:43

Most of the time it’s because they can’t be bothered to take them off. I do the same with my coat even when it’s baking inside.

Furx · 07/07/2018 14:59

I agree alberta. Sunglasses are functional, i wear mine for the reasons listed upthread, mainly prescription glasses, or im wearing contacts and don’t want dust in them. Or the lights are giving me a migraine.

I actually look a dick in them, my eyes are quite strikingly pretty. The rest of me, not so much.

Topseyt · 07/07/2018 15:04

I wear glasses all of the time. Both for distance and reading. Anything that isn't to my prescription is actually totally useless to me.

These days I buy reactions lenses when I need new glasses, so they double as sunglasses too.

If I am getting onto the tube, train, bus or whatever from an out in the open platform then the lenses would be dark and I would be in sunglasses. They would lighten over the next few minutes.

I don't think it would occur to me to even question this. Some people are just more comfortable this way. Others are in their prescription sunglasses and don't want to bother changing. Some have problems with their eyes. Some might also be making fashion statements.

Nothing wrong with any of these reasons.

ALongHardWinter · 07/07/2018 18:27

It pisses me off when people wear sunglasses indoors, full stop. Unless there is a medical reason of course. But I think most people who wear sunglasses in places like underground trains are doing it so that they can stare at people and think that they won't be noticed. Wrong. I feel the same way about people who keep hoods up on coats while they're indoors. I've noticed this quite a lot in cafés and coffee shops. Unless it's really cold inside the shop, there is no reason to be wearing the hood on your coat. To me,it looks like they're trying to hide their face.

A friend of mine has glasses that look like sunglasses but they’re for her dyslexia, they’re pretty cool tbh so she wears them whenever she needs to read :)

Friend of mine has two boys that do the same

They are cool glasses

IhopeyoulikeNavantoo · 07/07/2018 19:08

prescription sunglasses

ChanklyBore · 07/07/2018 19:13

In this weather I forget my regular glasses a lot and just fling my prescription sunnies on. I’m short sighted so usually I use my glasses to get places and read signs, see ongoing cars, not get run over. But when I get to eg work or coffee with friend or restaurant etc I might easily take off even regular glasses because I don’t need them to see a friend a few feet away or a computer screen.

So yes I’m the one with the sunnies on if I’m getting from a to b

LeighaJ · 07/07/2018 19:29

I thought most people just tried to get through their journey without staring at strangers.

Sheldonoscopy · 07/07/2018 19:37

Migraines for me. Certain lights (including daylight in all its variations of glory) can bring about one- even when it’s overcast or raining. All year round I wear them.

The irritating comments I get from people in the winter saying ‘it’s snowing- why the hell do you have your sunglasses, you think it’s summer or something!?’ 🙄

Solongsuckers · 07/07/2018 22:26

I can't be bothered taking them off, especially if i already have my hands full. They also don't stay on my head so 9 times out of 10 they will fall on the floor if i look up. I have no idea why other people care, just get a life...I don't do it to look cool but if anyone else does I couldn't care less. How is it different to the million other things that people do to make themselves look better, more interesting ect...
