To not dress my 4 month olds as superheroes?

DTs attend a baby sensory class. Mostly cos it means I don't feel guilty for refusing to buy them flashy light up toys from ELC.

The teacher announced that this week, she wanted all the babies dressed as superheroes as they are doing a special session for charity. My initial reaction was fuck that shit. Bung you a tenner and call it quits. Aibu?

I mean, I have a 3yo and two small babies. I am going to spend any spare time and cash in a coffee shop, not sewing miniature Catwoman outfits.

get some red pillowcases cut around the fold two long rectangles sew bit of ribbon to make a tie or sew onto back of t-shirt. Pair of matching undies over trousers ....done Grin

Handsfull13 · 06/07/2018 11:31

Tell the to get stuffed unless you were gifted hero onesies I wouldn't be buying anything.
Put the bib on backwards as a cape for a token gesture.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/07/2018 11:34

Class in an hour. I may just tuck brightly coloured muslins into their back collars and say they are capes.

Actually that would be worse than doing nothing, wouldn't it.

Baby superheroes are really easy - you know those vests that clip under the bum? Put the vest in a contrasting colour on over the leggings / trousers and hey presto, superhero. Add a backwards bib for a cape if you really feel flashy.

But yes, do whatever you like and is easiest for you. It's not a big deal. The rate babies spit up and make a mess means plenty of them starting the class in the outfit will be changed into something else by the end anyway.

BertieBotts · 06/07/2018 11:37

Perhaps she assumes everyone will be some kind of superhero fan - we certainly already have several Superhero themed clothes Grin

If you're not and you don't have anything already I wouldn't bother. I mean you could stick a headband on them and call it superman/wonder woman, but it's really not necessary.

If you did want to get something H&M and Matalan both have superhero bits which are just normal baby clothes (not really costumes) for not much money but defo I wouldn't go out of your way if it's not something you'd dress them in normally.

Fatted · 06/07/2018 11:39

I don't see the issue with asking them to dress up as super heroes?

My boys had loads of spiderman and batman onsies and tops when they were little so I would have just chucked one of them in something like that

Why would you have to make something?

BertieBotts · 06/07/2018 11:40

This would be a bit cheeky but basically justified if you have 3 under 4 Wink

LaurieMarlow · 06/07/2018 11:40

Don't bother if you can't be arsed. There's an assumption that everyone's into superhero stuff for some reason. I would rise to a backwards bib and that's it.

BertieBotts · 06/07/2018 11:41

Actually Asda had even cheaper bits so supermarkets would probably work. But don't waste money if you don't need any new clothes.

Di11y · 06/07/2018 11:47

I like the idea of bright vest over trousers and bright muslin pinned as cape Smile

Di11y · 06/07/2018 11:48

Or draw on some specks and they're Clark Kent Wink

4GreenApples · 06/07/2018 11:50

I wouldn’t bother buying a superhero outfit for a baby for a one off thing like this.

The vest over tights / trousers sounds like a good compromise.

Swearwolf · 06/07/2018 12:04

Catwoman isn't a superhero...

StripeyDeckchair · 06/07/2018 12:06

OMG does she realise how tiring it is having twins?
When mine were that age getting to group on time with them both dressed was a huge achievement for me. If someone had asked me to dress in superhero costumes I'd've just laughed at them and asked if they were joking.

All mums are heroes, Mums of twins are superheroes in the first year, it's so relentless.

JJS888 · 06/07/2018 12:11

Keep the £10 and buy the poor children some toys. Then you can ditch the pretentious classes.

bunbunny · 06/07/2018 13:53

Turn up with them dressed in whatever you would normally dress them in.

If she says anything say that she didn't say anything about it being compulsory, you thought she just meant to put it on if you had it and you don't.

And that obviously you knew she didn't mean to go out and buy two new expensive branded superhero outfits that are only ever going to get worn once... dubious in cash terms and disposable society wastefulness.

Plus - most importantly - your babies are super hero babies to you - and that here they are - the Super Twins in their special disguise outfits (aka normal clothes).

HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 13:59

I wouldn't bother for a 4 months old who really doesn't care! A comfortable summer onesie in this heat is more than enough. I don't know any baby who is a superhero fan from birth, it's ridiculous Grin

It's good they do a theme that can appeal for some parents, but no one will care if you don't follow.

Sleepless123456789 · 06/07/2018 17:40

Take them in regular clothes, and if challenged tell the teacher they were in superhero kit, but the baby was sick / had an accident/ played in the sink etc Grin

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/07/2018 20:38

So they were the only babies not dressed up Grin parenting fail no 57 this week.....

But then every single baby bar one was in some Superman outfit which I am guessing must be in Primark now.

I am fairly sure none of the babies actual gave a shit.

OP posts:
HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 21:03

this doesn't qualify as a parenting fail! Grin

we have enough of morally mandatory dress up days at school when they do care not to bother about the baby ones when you are a paying customer. If someone is crafty and loves making something, they have a good outlet. You don't have to feel guilty for a sec

4GreenApples · 07/07/2018 20:13

I think that children have to be old enough to notice that they’re the odd one out before you can class not putting them in fancy dress as a parenting failure Grin

hmmwhatatodo · 07/07/2018 20:16

I can’t stand super hero costumes for children. Why do parents send their children into school wearing them for some events. I wish they had never been invented.

4GreenApples · 07/07/2018 20:35

My DC love their superhero t-shirts and would wear them every day if they could.

Although we didn’t buy them any superhero themed clothes until the DC were old enough to tell us that they wanted them.

weeklywoo · 07/07/2018 20:51

I have to say I enjoyed it when my dds baby class had certain themes and could dress up, but that's because I was a lonely sahm and it gave me something to look forward to/ something to aim for.
If it's not your thing or don't have time it's absolutely not a parenting fail! As you say the babies don't care and the other mums won't notice or care, they'll just be wondering if everyone thinks their baby is the cutest

ferrier · 07/07/2018 20:54

At 4m old I wouldn't be buying special outfits or spending time making them for random charity events. There are better things to be doing with the time/money.
