To think it's not negoSSSiate

Have you ever met anyone who says negosssiate instead of negoshiate in real life? If so, do they also say situasssion instead of sitchuation? And mensssion for mentchion? It's weird, right? Bothers me every time I watch the news. And don't get me started on Breggsit.

I do.

I say “iSSSue” not “ishoo” too.

And “tiSSSue”, not “tishoo”.

Gardenpicnic · 06/07/2018 08:32

But it is negosssiate... Confused

Alpanini · 06/07/2018 08:36

Out of interest, where are you from? I'm from the South East and the only time I hear it like that is on TV. Maybe it's regional? I'm now sitting alone in my kitchen attempting 'mention/ mension' in various accents aloud.

Its the same as when people say "glaaass" instead of "glass" or "baarth" instead of "bath".

Sometimes it's regional, other times it is people trying to project a certain image.

KirstenRaymonde · 06/07/2018 08:39

It is meant to be pronounced negossiate, not negoshiate and tisssue not tishoo, they’ve just been shortened over time and it’s become acceptable, as language is want to evolve like that.

KinkyAfro · 06/07/2018 08:39

It's not though, it's neg oh shi ate not neg oh see ate

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 06/07/2018 08:40

Personally, I find both equally acceptable. It’s clear what’s meant.

Stephisaur · 06/07/2018 08:42

"Ti" should produce a "sh" sound in the English language.

So "Nego-shi-ate", "Situa-shun", "Men-shun" etc.

That said, if I went around correcting everybody who didn't pronounce words 'correctly', I would never get anything done.

SugarIsAmazing · 06/07/2018 08:42

I say glaarss and baarth.

araiwa · 06/07/2018 08:45

stephisaur until you end up with shits in your bra

Laiste · 06/07/2018 08:46

Nego sh iate
Men ch un
I sh u (issue)
Situa sh un

all shhhhh's here.

But - i say tisssssue. Not tishu.

Never thought about this before.

Enb76 · 06/07/2018 08:46

Drives me mad too - I secretly judge people who do it and lump them in with people who say 'haitch'.

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 06/07/2018 08:49

The English language is full of such anomalies!

Stephisaur · 06/07/2018 08:50

@araiwa Grin

Ok, Ti followed by a vowel. Clearly still half asleep :)

blueskypink · 06/07/2018 08:52

And mensssion for mentchion?

How do you pronounce "action" op?

Alpanini · 06/07/2018 08:54

Haha Enb76...
Yes, Stephisaur, that's what I thought!
I don't judge... just assume that someone changed the correct pronunciation and didn't tell me. Like they seem to have done with coup. Can't count the number of times I've heard 'coop' on the TV / radio. It's been pointed out to me that language evolves over time and that we don't pronounce other loan words with an accent (e.g. restaurant) but it still sounds bizarre to me. Maybe I'm old.

Act shi on

OP posts:
jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 06/07/2018 08:55

That’s how I say it. I also say ‘haitch’ which is the correct pronunciation in Hiberno-English so judge away Enb76 😁

Alpanini · 06/07/2018 08:57

Ah, seems like it should be negotishiate but the 'new' pronunciation is with the sss
According to this video

I had a friend who's mum used to say 'elarstic' instead of elastic and 'plarstic' instead of plastic. Weird.

ciderhouserules · 06/07/2018 09:07

My father used to say Pashio rather than Patio.

Juells · 06/07/2018 09:09

I say negossiate. Never really thought about it before. All the other ti words I pr as th, so don't know why negotiate is different.

Juells · 06/07/2018 09:10

@jerrysbellyhangslikejelly

Hiberno-English speaker here too

Enb76 · 06/07/2018 09:14

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly

Yeah, but you're practically foreign so it doesn't count Smile the people I know who say it are just wrong. I had to berate my daughter with the "some people say that and that's fine but in this house we say ..." when she came back from school saying 'haitch".

PiggeryPorcombe · 06/07/2018 09:20

What really annoys me is BREGGSIT.

It’s BREXIT. EXIT - AS IN LEAVING.
