I don't understand?... are they supposed to jump/jump up and down or on and off things? "My DC are adults l don't recall waiting for them to jump just crawl walk or talk.

PattiStanger · 06/07/2018 07:10

What are the blood tests for? Is there a specific condition the doctors are worried about.

Jumping wasn't something I monitored when my DC were younger so I have no idea at what age it would be expected.

DaphneDiligaf · 06/07/2018 07:11

Do you mean jump when startled?

Gribbie · 06/07/2018 07:13

I have a muscle problem (central core myopathy) and can’t jump - well can about 1cm on a good day.

Nomad86 · 06/07/2018 07:14

I believe two footed jumping is something they look for at around 2. I have friends whose children couldn't by this age due to problems with feet and hips.

Have they said what the test is for?

Gribbie · 06/07/2018 07:15

Just to reassure you I lead a happy fulfilled life. I’m slow on stairs and hills but generally can get on with things. Xx

Slartybartfast · 06/07/2018 07:15

can you ask whoever sent him for blood tests? was it a consultant?

Mari50 · 06/07/2018 07:15

I think you need to speak to your doctors about this and have them explain what they are looking for. There are some conditions which make jumping difficult for boys and they are probably looking to rule those out.
Does your son have large calves?

DappledThings · 06/07/2018 07:19

Following with interest as DS also doesn't jump. He was 2 in February and it was one of the things on the two year checklist. HV wasn't worried then but said to try and encourage it. 5 months later and still not. No other movement or coordination issues at all so I wasn't really concerned but now intrigued about blood tests.

mistermagpie · 06/07/2018 07:25

My DS couldn't jump at his 30 month hv check up and they were concerned. He also couldn't go up and down stairs by walking. So yes, not being able to jump is something they look at. My DS is three in a couple of weeks and recently learned to jump so the hv is happy, but he was a really late walker so they think he just might be late on all his gross motor skills. I wonder what the test is for too?

Aeroflotgirl · 06/07/2018 07:27

Seems very strange to have a blood test for that. Are there any other issues they could be concerned about, like learning delay, NDD.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 06/07/2018 07:29

I know what you mean OP. Copied this from a quick search:
"Jumping (24 to 36 months) Between 2 and 3 years, toddlers learn how to jump off low structures, and eventually how to jump from a standing position. Both of these skills require bilateral coordination, or the ability to use both sides of your body to do something different."
Hope everything is OK. Good luck with tests. My son was quite late in doing physical things. Walked (and first meaningful words) at 18 months and jumping was quite late too although can't remember exact date (sorry). Now he's 6 and no physical problems at all just doesn't listen!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 06/07/2018 07:31

What are the tests for? My son couldn't jump til he was 4. He was very late will all physical stuff. He's 6 soon and still isn't great. Sad

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 06/07/2018 07:32

Glad you got some useful replies in the time it took me to compose my essay!

cmlover · 06/07/2018 07:32

not jumping, running, walking different, can be a sign of a genetic disorder so I would asume they are ruling things out.

I'd speak to your dr or health visitor as it seems they didn't explain much at all.

schooltripwoes · 06/07/2018 07:33

I couldn't jump when I was 3 - turned out I had a hip deformity (I could still walk). Has he had his hips x-rayed?

Celb · 06/07/2018 07:35

He has a speech and language delay also which he is seeing he paediatrician about, unfortunately ok didn’t get time to ask in our appointment and now I am just worrying. :-( thank you all for your replies and kind words.

Slartybartfast · 06/07/2018 07:38

could you ring and ask what the reasons for the blood were op?

longwayoff · 06/07/2018 07:40

Celb, ring the person who referred your boy and ask them why. They have the answer to your question.

Lovemusic33 · 06/07/2018 07:41

My dd couldn’t jump (still can’t at the age of 14), she has lots of diagnosis’s, she has dyspraxia, hypermobility, hypertonia and Aspergers. Her legs are quite stiff and she struggles with movement and coordination.

MadameJosephine · 06/07/2018 07:43

You shouldn’t have to ask, they should have explained why they wanted to do them otherwise how can you give your consent? I would give the doctor’s office a call and ask for an explanation. My DD has a gross motor delay due to hypermobility , she had blood tests to screen for genetic conditions before being diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Celb · 06/07/2018 18:58

Couldn’t get a response today. Will have to wait til Monday:-(

puglife15 · 06/07/2018 19:03

Just to warn you blood tests for genetic conditions take 8 weeks round me so you might be in for a wait. My DC2 also can't jump but he tries!

ThatsWotSheSaid · 06/07/2018 19:05

My son has gross motor difficulties and they have tested him lots of things. Genetic conditions, muscle conditions, lack of certain vitamins etc.

Celb · 06/07/2018 19:09

Mine tries too, a little skip one foot at a time :-) xx
