£5 a scan picture?!

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:32

I was at my ultrasound scan the other day and decided I'd quite like a picture. When my mum had me she got it in a lovely little card thing with corner cutouts to hold it. It was very sweet, and I assumed mine would be the same!
When I was handed a tear off printout that had been torn badly and was told "that'll be £5, please pay at this machine" I was a little Shock!

Who do you think should pay for it?

RunMummyRun68 · 05/07/2018 18:34

They aren't obliged to provide a picture at all!! Why should they foot the bill for a non essential?

Blizzardagain · 05/07/2018 18:34

Printed scan images are of no use to them. It's for your benefit only so not sure why you'd expect it for free?

I have to pay at my local hospital too.

OrangeKettle · 05/07/2018 18:34

It's the NHS. Which needs to save money. As much as it's nice to have a picture, it's not a necessity.

Partyfops · 05/07/2018 18:34

Beside there's lots of spare money in the NHS Hmm

reallybadidea · 05/07/2018 18:35

So why do you think you should get it for free?

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 05/07/2018 18:35

It's a nice thing to have, but not medically necessary. The NHS is underfunded and struggling, so I think it's fair enough that they charge for things like that.

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 05/07/2018 18:36

£5? Lucky you! When I had DD in 2013 mine charged £7

QueenUnicorn · 05/07/2018 18:36

£5 is a lot for one print, I'm all for charging and covering costs but this excessive cost may stop poorer families from having a print from their scan.

MatildaTheCat · 05/07/2018 18:37

Actually you could have just asked for a non torn picture.

If you think £5 is a lot you are going to have a nasty surprise when you start the nursery and school photo merry go round.

RunMummyRun68 · 05/07/2018 18:37

It's not like a photo booth!

This is proper ,expensive equipment

Leontine · 05/07/2018 18:38

When did they start giving out scan photos? My mum doesn’t have any from when I was born in the early 90s.

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:38

I'm happy to pay for the picture, I just think £5 is a bit expensive! But now I think about it it's probably got some of the cost of the actual scan in there to alleviate the NHS burden. I was mostly a bit upset that it didn't come in a card folder like mum's, her said "Congratulations! From (hospital name)" and had a picture of a pram. Although thinking about that it could be a bit insensitive for mothers who miscarry, so I guess I was being unreasonable all along!

HollowTalk · 05/07/2018 18:38

Did you think it should have come out of the £350m pw Brexit money?

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:39

I was born in '95, and I think she even has one from my older brother who was born in '79 but I'd have to ask!

This is the same at my hospital, except each time (3), they’ve given it to me for free! I’ve seen others pay. I paid for my own gestational diabetes needles though, as I felt a bit guilty.

RiddleyW · 05/07/2018 18:40

Mine were a pound each in 2014.

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:40

Hahaha I'm looking forward to seeing the day the NHS sees a penny of Leave's brexit money!

Its £5 for one £10 for them at my hospital. Bargain compared to a private scan. Yabu. Who do you expect to pay for the picture

SPARKS17 · 05/07/2018 18:41

I agree, I thought a fiver was pretty steep for a print that probably cost the NHS 10p! I had a private scan the day before my first scan and they gave me about 20+ pics so I can’t imagine they are that expensive to print out!

RunMummyRun68 · 05/07/2018 18:42

You wanted it presented in a decorated folder!??

Who pays for that?? It's just more tat

BlueBug45 · 05/07/2018 18:43

You pay £5 for 3 of the same images at my local maternity hospital, and they don't come in a card as due to the number of women they see they don't have time for that.

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 05/07/2018 18:43

Scans are for medical reasons, not to give pretty cards to parents.

Given you are having free maternity care and your child will benefit from free healthcare and schooling it's not too much to ask you pay for a non essential picture is it.

MorrisDancingViv · 05/07/2018 18:44

It's an easy was for the NHS to make money. I bet people would still buy them if they were £20 so they could make a lot more money

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:44

Runmummyrun, I thought that's what I was paying for at first! But I've thought about it now and I've realised I was being U, it's probably so expensive because it helps cover the costs of (actually very expensive) ultrasounds themselves
