£5 a scan picture?!

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 18:32

I was at my ultrasound scan the other day and decided I'd quite like a picture. When my mum had me she got it in a lovely little card thing with corner cutouts to hold it. It was very sweet, and I assumed mine would be the same!
When I was handed a tear off printout that had been torn badly and was told "that'll be £5, please pay at this machine" I was a little Shock!

I only paid £ 2 per photo and I got a little folder for them.

I would have been shocked at £5 too OP.

I think you are getting some harsh replies.

They don't have to do it but it's a service they offer so they could at least not give you a ripped photo.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 05/07/2018 19:17

We didn't pay for ours, 4 and 2 years ago but we could make a donation to the nurses social fund if we wanted.

Iown5pairsofDocMartens · 05/07/2018 19:18

Wow Bertie Ivillage. Blast from the past!

I was on there too for years.

WonderTweek · 05/07/2018 19:18

It was £4 back in 2016. We had bad news and it was super awkward to go and collect the yellow book from the reception and pay for the photos. The receptionist took one look at us and went “umm, you don’t need to... pay for these”. It’s the little things you remember.

With my living child we got all of our scan photos for free as we were under Fetal Medicine. Gosh, now that I think about the endless tests and consultations they gave us for free, I feel like I should go and give them my money! I ❤️NHS

Fluffyrainbows · 05/07/2018 19:18

With my older children they were free, but I think there started to be a problem when people expected them and would ask for extra for grandparents or friends etc.
Our hospital has charged £5 per photo for the last 9 years. There is a maximum of 5 you can buy and you can pay by card. The letters don't tell you this but when you book in they ask you. To be honest I've often paid for 1 and been given 3.
The scan is not for your excitement, it's to check dates at the start and for anomalies at the second so there's no obligation at all to give you any. You get to see your baby for free. If you just want pics you can go to a private scan for @£50 and have a look and photos in a pack.

buzz91 · 05/07/2018 19:19

Mine were £5 but I got 6 (maybe more) different scans and I got a little card thing to put it in, I’m in Wales

ChikiTIKI · 05/07/2018 19:21

It's £2 for a picture where I went. Don't see why they should charge so much more elsewhere seems a lot to me!

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/07/2018 19:21

They should have told you the charge first and cut it properly.

To the poster upthread: What £350m Brexit money?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/07/2018 19:21

I had my dc1 in early 2010, dc5 arrived last Summer. My Trust have always charged £5 for 1 or 3 for £10, I think it's perfectly reasonable.

honeyishrunkthekid · 05/07/2018 19:22

It would have been on your letter.
Tbh I wouldn't be shocked, I paid £5 5 years ago. And it's going to cost the NHS a lot more to keep you in their care and provide whilst you are pregnant.

£5 for a forever photo. Bargain

chrisinthesun · 05/07/2018 19:22

YANBU £5 is a pisstake. A pound would be more than enough.

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 19:23

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to pay! I had brought money with me because my earlier scans had taken so long after the scheduled appointment time (Bladder was killing me, the anatomy scan was 90 minutes behind!) that I wanted to have money for lunch in case I was there for long again.

ChikiTIKI · 05/07/2018 19:24

Oh and on the second scan I still asked for a couple of pictures because I wanted them even thought the baby was facing the wrong way! I think they might have given me extra pics or charged me less that time.

minniemummy0 · 05/07/2018 19:25

They were £5 when I had my baby last year. The first one I got free because the machine was broken. I asked for one at my last couple of scans (high risk so had scans every 3 weeks towards the end) and they gave me those for free because they said “you can’t see much at this point” but I was quite please to have a picture of her head 😂

They do still come in a folder here, see attached. You can buy cute frames for them as well though.

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 19:25

Honey it wasn't on the letter, it just said only one person could come to the scan. I looked over it after to see if it did say anything. They've just switched from paper notes though to the computer system, so maybe it was in the old packs but they haven't had chance to transfer info to a different format yet.

Honestly it's the prescriptions charge I eat annoyed with-

3 days of antibiotics cost the same as a 10 day course.
I knew 3 days would be enough but nurse said no. So I had to pay 2 lots of £8.80 instead of one 10 day prescription that would have done the job.

Just think that it goes towards NHS, which is always great

honeyishrunkthekid · 05/07/2018 19:27

Ahhh okay, it was on mine. I remember them saying to bring change!

But only one person. That's a real shame. Anyway congratulations!

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 19:27

I'm having scans every four weeks because of her smallness (she's in the 5th centile at the moment but they've said that's not a worry as she may have a growth spurt!)

@jabberwabber
About time! Mine was 2014 and 2015

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 05/07/2018 19:28

My dd was born in 2012 and it was £4 then, I’m surprised it hasn’t gone up a whole lot more.

PodgeBod · 05/07/2018 19:29

£5 in my trust too but you do get a little folder, sometimes when they weren't very good they just gave them for free though. When I had my first the EPU would give you a free picture but now they won't print out pictures from the epu at all, but do allow you to take a picture of the screen with your phone.
Only thing that bothers me is they tell you to ask at the beginning if you want a picture, a couple of times when I asked I was given a shirty response, didn't understand that at all!

CSISaraSidle · 05/07/2018 19:30

Honey only one person at a time doesn't bother me too much! The only people who are interested in coming are my parents and sister, and I think all three of them would be a bit much! They're all big criers

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 05/07/2018 19:31

I had to pay £ 3 for a scan pic of my son 19 years ago. £ 5 seems very reasonable.

JohnHunter · 05/07/2018 19:31

£5 probably is the cost of replenishing toner, buying paper (both likely made for that specific machine and sold for an excessive sum), the sonographer spending an extra minute trying to get a "nice" picture, and dealing with occasional complaints, e.g. "my photo was ripped".

bullyingadvice2017 · 05/07/2018 19:32

Hahahaha if you think 5£ for that's expensive just wait until kids arrive.
