to ask what to do with my day off?

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 14:57

I am soon reducing my hours and going from a 5 to a 4 day week. My day off will be on a Friday - DS will be at nursery and then at school.

I don't remember the last time I had time to myself and am aware I might end up at a loss of what to do.

So, what can/should I do? If you've adjusted to going part time, how did you find it? I don't want to end up doing cleaning or house stuff - I can do that on the other days and am concerned I will end up bored.

If I had a day to myself every week I would either go to a yoga class, or a gym class or a walk or a run but I'd schedule it in to make sure I did it.

The only 'house' thing I'd do is cook one dish ahead to put in freezer or for the weekend (if I could be arsed). I'd look and see if there was a daytime class I could join.

I'd garden and allotment in the summer.

Arrange and meet a friend for lunch.

Elasticity I beg your bloody pardon?! Shock That has to be troll/perve comment.

Gym class, take up a new hobby, do a local college course, meet up with friends, gardening.
I'd use it to redecorate every 5 minutes because that's what I enjoy. What are your interests?

redexpat · 04/07/2018 15:25

I'd make a start on the laundry and housework so we could enjoy weekends as a family.

ReasonableLlama · 04/07/2018 15:26

Gym. Get fit and feel sexier in yourself. Your DP will appreciate it too. Hmm

OP, can you play it by ear? This is what I would do...maybe one week I'll clean, another week I'll do a shop, another week I'll be in my PJs, maybe another week I'll meet a friend/my mum for lunch. There's nothing to say you have to do the same thing each week.

ReasonableLlama · 04/07/2018 15:28

And just to add, I've not gone part time myself but I work with a few people who work part time and they love it and say they always manage to find something to do. I'm a bit jealous to be honest!

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 15:29

redexpat I tend to do all that shit in the week.

I don't really have any interests, or friends. Have looked online for local classes/groups but there doesnt seem to be a great deal doing on a Friday...

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 15:30

Llama I am very fortunate that we can just about afford for me to do it.

You will be amazed how the time fills, enjoy it

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 15:33

I'm looking forward to having silence. Just me and my house and silence. Strange eh?

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 15:36

Forgive me if this is a bit rude of me, but why are you cutting down your hours, if you have no interests, no friends, and no idea what to do?

If it's for your mental health or work/life balance, I think you should do things like go for a leisurely swim followed by a coffee and a good book, or you should sit on the sofa all day watching a box set.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/07/2018 15:37

Or, sit in silence! Grin

That's not strange at all. Since having kids, I love the sound of silence!

Ellafruit1 · 04/07/2018 15:44

I have Fridays off. It’s teally valuable to have time to yourself where you can just be in the moment, not have any demands on you, go with the flow. I love it!

I tend to end up visiting my only close friend, or go out for a slow breakfast, or go for coffee, wander round clothes shops and ru things on without small child getting into mischief, get my hair cut, or just crash in front of the TV. Basically whatever I feel like on the day!

JennyBlueWren · 04/07/2018 15:46

Depends on your interests but I'd choose to do something you can't do with family. I'd probably go exploring, find local events on, bike ride... or stay in and cook something which needs time and attention (I like cooking), or just sit and read a book.

Actually the teachers I know who've gone down to 4days use it as their planning and marking day which I always think is a bit sad.

I think it could sometimes be good to do a housework day with no one else around especially if it frees up the weekend for something else. Your music/radio/podcast on.

WreckTangled · 04/07/2018 15:52

I have Fridays off and it always gets filled up! I tend to do my food shopping HmmGrin early so it's out of the way. Next Friday I'm going with a friend for a facial and back massage, I will often meet friends for lunch of breakfast. I always end up doing something really, in fact I'm not free on a Friday now until September Grin

5foot5 · 04/07/2018 15:52

I don't really have any interests

Well now is your chance.
There must be some hobby or activity that you have always fancied doing if only you had the time.

A former colleague of mine had Fridays off and she enrolled on a course in a subject she was already interested in. She did this for a couple of years I think and gained some qualifications in that subject. Which was handy shortly after when we were all made redundant because she decided to make a career change and became self employed doing the thing she had gained the qualification for.

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 15:56

BrutusMcDogface It's very much for my MH and to get myself out there. I just can't bloody find anything!

Where do you find out whats on?

OP posts:
Elasticity · 04/07/2018 15:58

No not a troll comment. Lots of people who lose weight or get more into shape say they feel sexier? It's hardly a bad thing to feel more confident and sexy?

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 16:04
Biscuit

All the things I can find to do on a Friday seems to be geared for the old folk - ballroom dancing, bus to another town... This is all off the council website.

halfwitpicker · 04/07/2018 16:10

Yeah, cj, get fit for ya luvver Grin

Do you live near any museums?

Or try meetup.com

WreckTangled · 04/07/2018 16:11

I think as the weathers nice, for now, just take some time to wind down. Go for a nice walk and a coffee, read a book, sort out the cupboard you've been meaning to do for years! I'm looking forward to winter when I can go Christmas shopping on my own Grin

cjt110 · 04/07/2018 16:11

halfwit There's a few but we've lived here a while so have pretty much done all the tourist places - we live in a popular tourist place.

Just thought about doing some gym classes but the membership is like £40 a month! Shock

Ballroom dancing geared for old folk? Maybe pre-Strictly 20 years ago. I was at the British Open Ballroom and Latin championships in Blackpool this year - the attendees comprised all ages and most of the world class competitors were in their twenties at most. My many friends in the dance teaching industry recount full classes for ballroom and Latin, again all ages from toddlers and up. Give it a whirl OP, you might be surprised how much fun it is plus it's great exercise.
