To be concerned about drone catching images of my children in paddling pool

Last night whilst my dc were playing in the garden, (which is completely private and in a rural location, we have about 3 neighbours) a drone flew over several times. The dc were playing in the paddling pool at this time in various states of undress.

My dh got the children in and I went in search of the drone operator. Located him and started filming him with my phone. He was on the other side of the river from my house. He disliked my filming of him and we became engaged in a fairly heated debate with me calling him a pervert and possibly a peadophileBlush. Apparently what he was doing was completely legal (I believe drone was less than 50 meters from us but that is up for debate) and he wasn't filming the dc. He did also phone the police after I left and then came around and spoke to my dh.

I have looked into this since and have found out that this is legal! How? Surely this can't be right? Surely we have a right to privacy in our own garden!

I would have a pressure washer that needed to wash the area above your house and garden - I can’t imagine there is a law that says you can’t water the air! It would be a shame if the drone got splashed a little.

pigsDOfly · 04/07/2018 10:16

Sounds like a massive over reaction to some idiot with a drone.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/07/2018 10:16

You started filming him and called him a pervert and a paedophile?
What the actual fuck?

MissionItsPossible · 04/07/2018 10:16

YANBU to be concerned but it’s not on accusing someone of being a paedophile and I’d have probably called the police on you as well.

APMom · 04/07/2018 10:18

I’d have filmed him too but would have reported him to the police.

Slightlygiganticpants · 04/07/2018 10:19

The man was filming us and our semi naked dc on our private property. Really do not understand why there would be an issue with me filming him!

MissionItsPossible · 04/07/2018 10:20

The issue isn’t you filming him, it’s going around calling him a paedophile. Do you not understand how wrong that is?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/07/2018 10:20

You don’t see the problem with filming him and calling him a pervert and a paedophile?

Why was you filming him, just out of curiousity?

Slightlygiganticpants · 04/07/2018 10:20

We are in a very rural area with fields and river around so there was no reason for him to film over our garden which has high hedges and trees around it.

Henrysmycat · 04/07/2018 10:22

Really? Massive overreaction? Only on Mumsnet filming children in various state of undress in the garden for prolong period of times is considered an innocent act. If he’s not a perv he was filming to raid your remote house.
Famous people have drone jammers for this particular reason. Relaxing in your garden is now a free for all pervs.

Xenia · 04/07/2018 10:22

I couldn't care less if men masturbate to pictures or whatever but I do want privacy in my own garden and I think we are all entitled to that. I wonder if we can buy anti drone equipment as I bet this will increase more and more. I have very tall trees on at least 3 sides but someone could fly one over and then lower it I suppose.

jumblefun2 · 04/07/2018 10:22

You totally over reacted.

FurryDogMother · 04/07/2018 10:22

How do you know he was filming you? Not all drones have cameras on them, and even if they do, they're not always turned on. Probably just a bloke practising his flying skills!

Slightlygiganticpants · 04/07/2018 10:22

As I said I called him those names after he became irate at me filming him. I possibly shouldn't have called him a paedophile but with all the fields around what the actual fuck did he need to fly over our garden so many times?

OP posts:
jumblefun2 · 04/07/2018 10:24

Where does the op say that her children were filmed "for a prolonged period of time"? She says the drone flew over several times. did the drone stop over her children and target just them for filming? Or was it just over-flying the general area?

Out of interest, what did the police say?

TheGreatCornholio · 04/07/2018 10:24

How do you know he was filming you?

LagunaBubbles · 04/07/2018 10:24

Complete over reaction.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/07/2018 10:25

He didn't like being filmed? Irony, much?

What was his perfectly innocent reason for filming your DC in their private garden?

I second the pressure washer suggestion.

FocusOnMePlease · 04/07/2018 10:25

You ANBU to be concerned but the way you dealt with the situation makes you sound unhinged- got to be honest! Confused

Ethylred · 04/07/2018 10:25

"me calling him a pervert and possibly a peadophile"

"I possibly shouldn't have called him a paedophile "

Well at least your spelling has improved.

LagunaBubbles · 04/07/2018 10:25

Possibly shouldn't have called him a paedophile? Hmm

Noqont · 04/07/2018 10:27

He was wrong. You weren't.

Shoxfordian · 04/07/2018 10:27

Yeah you did overreact
What did the police say?

SpandexTutu · 04/07/2018 10:28

Creepy git.
Maybe your reaction was strong, but it might stop him perving next time, or at least round your house and children.
What did the police say?

jumblefun2 · 04/07/2018 10:28

If you don't want your DC to be seen in various states of undress in the paddling pool THAT much that you'd go raging at someone calling them a paedophile and a pervert, then maybe you might be wise to put a swimming costume on them.
