Saying hello to child on school trip

LuckyAmy1986 · 04/07/2018 09:35

I just saw my child out on a school trip and as I walked past him said hello to him and blew him a kiss and he got excited and said mummy then happily went on his way with the teachers and kids. I feel like I shouldn’t have said anything to him, maybe a safety thing? DH things there is nothing to worry about but I’m thinking I’ll get told off later!

There's nothing wrong with what you did,I think it's really lovely and I love you DS response.

When ever we go to anything to do with any of our DC's schools I usually have up of 50 children shouting to me,waving at me,clambering over me and the teachers are all fine with it because they know that the parents and children all know me and I used to work in Schools and Nurserys.

I have to say that still happens with the teenagers as well, not the clambering luckily enough because most of them are half a foot taller than me and they'd end up flooring me Grin

wishywashy6 · 04/07/2018 10:10

@bebanjo understand that but OP isn't a member of the public she's his mother ...

gekiort · 04/07/2018 10:11

Mumsnet puts some weird ideas into people's heads. This is YOUR child.

OiWhoTookTheGoodNames · 04/07/2018 10:12

On a big "proper" school trip I'd think it bloody odd if a parent just randomly happened to rock up at the zoo or whatever - but in terms of school trips where you're going around the local area to look at frogspawn in the local pond or change books at the local library (my kids' school do a lot of these) - perfectly par for the course for the kids to run into people they know who are out and about doing errands while the kids are at school and the kids always say hello and wave and stuff.

We also quite often run into teachers and TAs from schools out in the local area at weekends (our school's unusual in how many teaching staff live in-catchment) - they just smile, wave and say hello usually.

GerdaLovesLili · 04/07/2018 10:13

Did the same yesterday! Met Small Son's class walking to the swimming pool as I was going the other way. It would have been weird not to say hello.

bigKiteFlying · 04/07/2018 10:13

Last primary school they regularly went across the road to church - as school had expanded past capacity of the school hall, and little trips round local area.

To get anywhere - shops, town, play groups, library, children centre I would have to go past school.

Wasn't uncommon to see one of my children with their class - often found teachers were just as likely as their friends to point us out. I did wonder if it was because I has younger sibling with me but it continued after they started school.

spanishwife · 04/07/2018 10:15

How old are you OP, that you are still terrified of being told off by teachers?!

astoundedgoat · 04/07/2018 10:16

Not at all - when I've passed my 9yo on the street on a school trip I've always waved and said hellloooooo!! I know she'd be mortified if I kissed or hugged her though, so I maintain a respectful distance. Grin

I was a parent helper on a school trip with my 7yo recently, to a famous place in London, and when we were eating lunch (in a nearby park) they came out and joined us while we were eating/playing and then went back to work. It was really nice and the children were very pleased to get a "surprise" visit from Mummy or Daddy.

Mayhemmumma · 04/07/2018 10:17

Oh bless you OP you're fine!!

PickledLilly · 04/07/2018 10:24

I was on aged 5 or 6 that went past my mum’s office. She had stuck a MASSIVE message right across the windows and was waving to me. I can still remember how excited I was! I see no harm at all in what you did as it didn’t disrupt the trip

LuckyAmy1986 · 04/07/2018 10:26

Thanks all! Spanishwife I know but I suffer with social anxiety so I always overthink things, even the most simple of interactions I will go over in my mind which is very annoying. It’s things like this where I think was that ok? Like I said I immediately regretted it and it obviously bothers me enough to start a thread lol! Feeling calmer now though.

At that age, they get so excited and proud to tell their friends that "mummy" or "daddy" is here - enjoy it. As long as the kid stay safely in the line and doesn't run across a busy road when you call him, the teachers are fine.

probablyhangry · 04/07/2018 10:28

My nephew was on a school trip a few months ago, he sees me walking down street, I hadn't seen him so he decides to shout "oi (my name)". I just waved as his teacher told him off for shouting. He is 12 though so he should have known better Grin

Sirzy · 04/07/2018 10:29

Personally I wouldn’t have shouted over.

If he had noticed of course I would have said hi and acknowledged but I wouldn’t have distracted them by shouting

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/07/2018 10:39

The OP said hello. No shouting over was done!

Felyne · 04/07/2018 10:40

Your own child - fine.
Smiling at kids on a school trip going past you - fine
Striking up a conversation with a random unknown kid on a school trip - not so fine

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/07/2018 10:42

Striking up a conversation with a random unknown kid on a school trip - not so fine

Confused
Sirzy · 04/07/2018 10:43

The op “called over hi” and he hadn’t seen her at that point. Like I said personally I wouldn’t have done that and distracted them

Oldraver · 04/07/2018 10:44

Aww. I used to bump into DS's class when they were walking to swimming..All the kids used to get excited when they saw someone they knew and you would hear "it's Oldraver's Mum" go round. DS was always dead chuffed. Teacher would always greet warmly as well.

So yea...you're overthinking Grin

Nanna50 · 04/07/2018 10:46

Oh dear I would have probably ran over and given my 5 year old a cuddle as my DH did once when he saw DD on a trip. He then asked the teacher if it was safe to have a bunch of 5 year olds so close to the water edge on the quayside. Blush

user789653241 · 04/07/2018 10:49

My ds banged on the window when he was out on the trip around the town and passed our house. I waved, and teacher/ta was smiling.

Ellie56 · 04/07/2018 10:53

I walked past him said hello to him and blew him a kiss and he got excited and said mummy then happily went on his way

This is a primary pupil though, right...? Grin

Laughing at the idea anyone might think this was a teenager! GrinGrin

Keepondreamingcheese · 04/07/2018 10:54

Saw mine on a school trip and all the kids shouted and waved so i stood there waved said hello and may or may not have done a silly dance Blush

cricketmum84 · 04/07/2018 10:58

@LuckyAmy1986 if it was my teenager on a trip I would have probably jumped up and down, blown kisses and shouted "awwww look at my baby boy!!!"

But them I'm a cruel mother GrinGrinGrin
