to ask what you pay in gas/elec each month?

So, I'm stressing about finances and I know our gas and electricity bills are just ludicrous.

We pay £231 per month gas and £149 per month electricity. This is with SSE in Scotland and by direct debit.

We live in a big, 4 bedroom house. However the heating was timed approx 0530-8am winter and 4.30-8.30ish in winter. We obviously popped it on in between if ever needed. It's been off since May.

We have the hot water function on constantly. I know we probably need to update to a new combi boiler.

But does this seem around average? Because when I search our KwH usage, the average UK usage is more than half of what we used last year!

What a waste of money Angry

Omg I pay £90/m for my oil (read gas) and £80 for my elec- we live in a 5 bed detached house! I'm also with SSE. I think youre doing something wrong!!!

Runningintothesunset · 04/07/2018 01:10

Have a look at pureplanet, we switched to them and our bills are now loads cheaper (and it’s renewable energy too). If you do investigate them pm me as I can give you a referral code so we both get £25 Smile

We are a 4 bed house (with an aga) and with them last month was £132 in total for both gas and electricity. In a cold month it was £220 for both

Bossyboots88 · 04/07/2018 01:11

I have prepayment meters with utilita I pay £20 per week on each for a decent sized 3 bedroom house. During the summer months when we don't use as much gas this saves up for winter and my electricity stays the same all year round.

Move2WY · 04/07/2018 01:13

We pat £100 for both for our large 3 bed detached. Edf.

MrsRubyMonday · 04/07/2018 01:43

We've just moved house and went from a standard meter in the old house to top-up in the new house. Old house was electricity only, around £100 a month. New house, I put £50 on gas and £50 on electric at the beginning of June, we've used around £30 of electric and maybe £5-10 of gas at a push.

New house is a 3 bed terrace, only me and DW and we are pretty good with switching stuff off/ not leaving stuff running unnecessarily, but at the same time we aren't previous about switching everything off at the wall all the time.

I would say you definitely need to consider switching suppliers.

PaperTrain · 04/07/2018 01:48

Victorian 4 bed semi.

£100/month for duel fuel with Bulb.
Caveat: We have solar panels so electricity always low - but they don't help with winter heating and even with boiler on all day that's not topped £150 for the gas.

Is your house old? Can you do better to insulate? Electricity seems really high if it's not doing heating and water (my in laws pay the same as you for all-electric house)??

BigMamaFratelli · 04/07/2018 02:04

Wow. Biggish four bed detached with only partial double glazing - 128 per month dual fuel. Never scrimp on heating.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/07/2018 06:29

The average cost from everyone (not just an unrepresentative sample on here) is about £100 pm for gas and electricity, so you're paying nearly 4 times that Shock.

What's your insulation like? Have you had your cavity walls filled, if this is possible? If you have a combi boiler, then the hot water is instant so shouldn't cost a lot. You don't have a water tank for hot water too do you?

Your electricity is very high too. What are you doing with this? Some lightbulbs use a lot of electricity and it could be worth changing them to lower consumption ones. Do you have any electric heating or use the tumble dryer a lot?

You would expect your bills to be above average as a larger than average house, but not by the amount you say. It might be worth talking to your energy company about personalised energy efficiency advice and see if there are any grants available for improvements.

Summer1986 · 04/07/2018 06:40

£70 dual fuel with Flow energy. 3 bed 1930s semi.

lidoshuffle · 04/07/2018 06:44

Blimey, £55 pm for me - small 3 bed house with eon.

PartTimeProcrastinator · 04/07/2018 06:45

£49 a month combined gas and electric, use less in summer which covers slight increase in winter. 3 bed terrace and only me and DS.

LadyPenelope68 · 04/07/2018 06:46

4 bedroom semi here, heating on when we want, teenage sons so lots of electricity use for PC/gaming stuff and tumble dryer used every day and we only pay £103 a month for both gas and electricity combined.

PattiStanger · 04/07/2018 06:46

It doesnt matter what other people pay, they don't live in your house, it's of no use to you.

You should make sure you're on the cheapest tariff you can get, make sure your meters are working properly then find out where you usage is and cut back if you can.

stopstalkingmee · 04/07/2018 06:48

Small 4 bed semi.

£86 a month for both by DD.

I don't scrimp in the heating either

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 04/07/2018 06:55

Too much

I pay 110 and I think that’s too much !

Switch

JennyBlueWren · 04/07/2018 06:55

We were also with SSE paying similar amounts until we needed to make savings. Used a comparison site and now pay Iresa £66 for both.

We also always have hot water on the combi.boiler. Is this not normal? I do have the water temperature lower for safety though.and turn it up for my bath.

oreosoreosoreos · 04/07/2018 06:55

£170 per month for both ( but also have a log burner and open fire)- we were with affect, have just switched to bulb.

We live in a 1930's very draughty 4 bed cottage with little insulation, poor windows and a very old and inefficient heating system.

Have gradually been putting in insulation and replacing for better quality (and better fitting) windows, and put a new combi boiler in, so am hoping to see a massive saving this winter!

Have you done a comparison checker? If you get out your last years worth of bills it will show your usage over the year, making it easy to compare. For us, high usage meant a higher day rate but lower cost per unit made sense, but it really depends on what you use.

Amanduh · 04/07/2018 06:56

£60 for both, 3 bed semi. New build and keeps the heat well but we don’t scrimp.

hiddenmnetter · 04/07/2018 06:57

£107/month for gas & elec in a 4-bed end of terrace with Iresa.

MissRainbowBrite · 04/07/2018 07:00

I'm in a new build, biggish, 4 bed detached and ours is £105 a month for both. Definitely don't scrimp on heating when it's needed either, your bill seems huge.

Kingsclerelass · 04/07/2018 07:06

Wow, I have an old 4 bed house and we pay abou £160 / month for everything, also on SSE.

Have you checked your SSE balance . Sometimes they charge you too much and you can end up thousands in credit. If so, ask for the money back - by dated email - and reduce your DD amount.

One thing, during this hot weather, I’ve halved the amount of time I have the water heating on because it doesn’t cool off as fast.

But yes , seriously, consider a decent new boiler, and radiators are inexpensive so check you have the most efficient ones rather than “panel” radiators.

longwayoff · 04/07/2018 07:06

Frankly I have suspicions that they just make it up. 1 person in 2 bed flat.My combined gas and electricity have been in the last 18 months (same company) £60 per month. Then £27 month. Then recently £85 month. Apparently I have credit approx £350. Cant bear dealing with them. And as for water . . .

Roomba · 04/07/2018 07:07

I pay around £80 a month on average and that includes paying a debt off on a prepayment meter, so not on the cheapest tariff of all.

Terraced house, someone in most of the day, kids use various gadgets a lot and I cook a fair amount. We do put a jumper or two on rather than automatically stick the heating on in winter though. Am fanatical about switching stuff off when not in use.

I can't imagine how I would spend as much as you are doing, OP!

Halfblindbunny · 04/07/2018 07:10

Is that just to cover what you use or are you also paying off a debt?
Was your last statement to actual or estimated reads?
When did they last reassess your DD?
What is your balance are you in credit or debit?
Do you have an E7 meter but no storage heaters?
These are relevant questions what other people pay is not helpful.

somewhereovertherain · 04/07/2018 07:14

3 bed 1930s semi - well insulated, new boiler and led lighting

£70 per month combined.

Family of 4 have a gas and electric shower. We don't have the temperature that high on the central heating.
