So, I'm stressing about finances and I know our gas and electricity bills are just ludicrous.

We pay £231 per month gas and £149 per month electricity. This is with SSE in Scotland and by direct debit.

We live in a big, 4 bedroom house. However the heating was timed approx 0530-8am winter and 4.30-8.30ish in winter. We obviously popped it on in between if ever needed. It's been off since May.

We have the hot water function on constantly. I know we probably need to update to a new combi boiler.

But does this seem around average? Because when I search our KwH usage, the average UK usage is more than half of what we used last year!

What a waste of money Angry

Blimey, I've never known anyone have a bill that high! We're with NPower, three-bed Victorian semi, and our dual fuel bill is £60 per month.

This was my job for 3 years - fuel debt, tariffs, heating controls and fitting elec monitors. You cannot compare to another household, some families have an 11 kw shower and 5 ppl have 2 a day. Some people set the thermostat at 30 and have all windows open. Some peole charge a mobility scooter. Are your payments based on actual usage or is it a new account? Call them, update your meter readings, ask for your actual usage. Are you on economy 7? Make a chart and take twice daily meter readings for a whole week - 8am and 8pm.or something. Work out an actual.cost amd what part of the day it is thats uaing the most. Be a detective!
Elec is easy to work out gas a little more difficult but the formula will be on your bill (Don't forget standing charge)
In my experience they can be very helpful If you find someone that isn't, end the call and call back and try someone else. There's always a reason, it's just finding it!
Sorry for long post, it's a slight passion of mine haha!

Ibble, I did the same job for at least ten years, and you give very good advice!
