Yes, I do understand that people are excited about the football, but it’s Tuesday night and my DC, who is completely exhausted, has to get up early for school - the rather scary shouting has just woken her up. Yep, I know someone will say I should move to the middle of nowhere. I would love to - as many people would - but sadly that’s not possible.

Those of us with other hobbies don't make a big deal out of harassing everyone else to watch us, watch stuff with us, listen to us talk endlessly about the thing we like to do and then get rude and aggressive when other people are clearly bored

I have never been to an event in my life where someone sulks over not watching a sporting event. Controversially suggesting all people are different.

Football and everything it stands for is vile. If you can get that excited over a bunch of overpaid babies kicking a bag of gas around some grass, it's you I feel sorry for

What a bizarrely sweeping statement. Grass roots football does amazing stuff in a lot of communities.

The lack of critical thinking surrounding people who are sports fans is staggering

Usernumbers1234 · 04/07/2018 09:31

@Twitterqueen1

Is it really though? They have been running a similar campaign about domestic violence around rugby for a decade and Rugby isn’t painted in the same way that a football fan is.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing, it’s smart by the DV campaigners to use this to get the topic in the headlines. But I think it’s a bit of a red herring to blame it on sport. I would imagine more alcohol was drunk in the UK last night than any other Tuesday in the year and that is far more a contributor than whether or not England win a game.

Rugby doesn’t have hooliganism and people trashing towns because teams lose, but it also reported a large spike in DV on weekends of 6 nations games. Who wins those games is irrelevant, it’s just that dickheads drink all day and then decide to hit their wives later, very little to do with results.

Brendatheblender · 04/07/2018 09:31

If it makes you feel any better OP, my stoner neighbour obviously had a case of the munchies at 3am and the delivery driver parked on our front lawn (there’s no actual access to it so he drove over the playing field) with his music blaring.

DP had some choice words for him!

But I don’t mind noise from the football, it’s nice to see England doing well.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 09:32

Yeah, beautiful game

Yeah because that’s absolutely how all fans behave 🙄

CatkinToadflax · 04/07/2018 09:32

If anyone wants to know the precise score and exact state of play of any game whatsoever played by any team whosoever in the World Cup, please come on over to my house and sit in my garden. One of the houses backing on to ours is having a frigging garden party for what seems like every single match, regardless of who is playing who. Last night their cheerful frivolities went on well past midnight.

I'm getting really into the World Cup and so is everyone else in my house except the dog but I don't see why the loons usually quiet folk over the fence have to make QUITE SO MUCH NOISE for many hours after every single game. Apologies if that makes me a joyless fun sponge. Confused

RayneDance · 04/07/2018 09:32

Having lived with daily chronic neighbour issues, noise that meant we couldn't relax at all in our own home every single day, couldn't park, couldn't sleep every night due to large numbers outside by our bedroom window... Constant parties any night of the week, constant fighting, drinking, urinating all up and down garden.. Mountains of stinking rubbish drug dealing, taking...

Please... Count. Yourself. Lucky.

ShatnersWig · 04/07/2018 09:32

Lots of Twitter users calling for Harry Kane to be knighted when he put England ahead 1-0 last night.

God, I dread to think what we'll have to endure if they do go on and win this thing... Wink

Jorah · 04/07/2018 09:32

Some of these comments sound slightly unhinged. Football is a great sport. Like all sports, if you know a bit about it it is more fun to watch. Women's football is badly paid, does that make it OK? Honestly!

CatkinToadflax · 04/07/2018 09:35

RayneDance absolutely fair enough. Our neighbours are usually very very very quiet - point taken and I'm sorry you get such constant hassle. Flowers

Jux · 04/07/2018 09:35

If it's coming home, perhaps we could all wait until it's here?

Sick of it, was sick of it weeks ago. Is there a country that doesn't play football to which I could move?

ShatnersWig · 04/07/2018 09:36

Jacques I was more referring to the behaviour of the players on the pitch. Hardly beautiful. There are still swathes of people who think football players are role models for children. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate not all players take the piss or boast of roasting a girl in a hotel where they probably raped her,, but many do and when the manager is basically telling the national side to take the piss and do the whole fake injury shit because some other countries do it.... Not sure that's a good message.

UserX · 04/07/2018 09:37

No one has said that. But seeing your arse, because other people are happy about it and are celebrating does make you a joy sucker.

Nobody minds a bit of celebrating. Antisocial behavior as was in my road last night is another matter. Football brings out the worst in people and the pubs or other venues that encourage it should be held to account.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 09:38

@ShatnersWig

The problem is actors, rugby players all do that too. It’s the bizarre and over the top hatred of football that is completely pointless.

I think it’s fairly poor to tar a whole group by the actions of a minority. There’s are hundreds of thousands of footballers who never make the news, from smaller clubs who kids love.

I’m going to start a NAFALT campaign Wink

Jorah · 04/07/2018 09:39

Harry kane is happily married with two kids and he's bloody brilliant. A good role model. Or read the piece Lukaku wrote about his upbringing in poverty. Fantastically inspiring, I printed it out for my dd and she's pinned it on her wall.

Unfinishedkitchen · 04/07/2018 09:40

I don’t watch regular football but I love the World Cup.

I’m married to a man who doesn’t watch regular football but also loves the World Cup.

He didn’t beat me after the game.

Neither of us will be beating up any foreigners plus I’m mixed race and my DM is an immigrant. We love our country.

We’re both staunch remainers but we are very proud that England have made it this far and were both screaming and hugging at the end of a game that I thought would give me a heart attack it was that stressful! Football’s coming home!! Come on England!!

It’s very sad that some people’s lives are so joyless that they desperately seek to suck the enjoyment out of life for others but as they say misery loves company.

Shortstuff08 · 04/07/2018 09:41

ReanimatedSGB no one has ever started saying anything of the sort when I say I don't watch football. If they did it would be a response of 'just doesn't interest me, wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same' and then move on.

I am not interested in loads of stuff. But if I feel I am in a situation where I need to to chit chat with someone, I can fake a bit of interest to keep the conversation going. It's not hard is it.

Rugby doesn’t have hooliganism and people trashing towns because teams lose

I disagree. I love rugby and am heavily involved in the local rugby team (kids, adults and professional) there's plenty of hooliganism. Just not as organised as football hooliganism. Parents at kids games can be a nightmare.

However most football hooligans don't really give a shit about the sport, they are there for the fights and to start fights. Because there are twats and would start a fight over anything.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 04/07/2018 09:42

So your child was woke by your neighbours noise.

If you can hand on heart say you have never made a noise that may have woke someone then carry on moaning, but in all honesty we all have come home late and noisy at least once or left stupidly early to catch a plane, or put the bins out later than we should because we remembered just as we were going to bed.

People (you included) make noise, it’s a fact of life you have to get used to. I’m sure your child woke a few people when younger too.

Shortstuff08 · 04/07/2018 09:44

Antisocial behavior as was in my road last night is another matter. Football brings out the worst in people and the pubs or other venues that encourage it should be held to account.

It really doesn't bring out the worst in people. The shitheads use it as an excuse.

HairDyedPink · 04/07/2018 09:45

or just feel sorry for the poor people who have so little life that they can only find enjoyment in a football match, which wasn't even anywhere near the final, and need to scream and shout because it's the highlight of their sorry year Smile

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 09:46

I expect at some point your child will annoy your neighbour.

Here’s a box of grips please take one.

Trampire · 04/07/2018 09:46

Wow what a miserable basis for a thread.

We're not a football family, we don't support a team but even we were on the edge on our seat! I couldn't watch the penalties!

My dcs are getting caught up in all the excitement, it's great.

I can hear all my neighbours cheering. It's nice to hear!

I saw many many videos on Twitter of complete strangers (of all ethnic diversities) coming together to celebrate on the street.
What's so awful about complete joy and celebration for an hour or two?

I agree it's class snobbery.

ShatnersWig · 04/07/2018 09:46

Jacques I did say not all players are like that. I didn't say it doesn't happen elsewhere either. In tennis, for example, Nick Krygios is very entertaining but his behaviour on court is shocking, which is why he keeps getting fined, and several other players are regularly heard effing on court; whereas Federer never does. One is a good role model, the other is not.

But there is far more emphasis on/attention given to/idolising of football and footballers in the media than any other sport and we now have a manager of the national side openly admitting that he's told the players to, in effect, lie and cheat during games. I think that's a shame.

derxa · 04/07/2018 09:48

I think that's a shame. You don't really.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 09:48

I think that's a shame

It’s ok. I’m sure your innate superiority complex will get you through Grin

Jorah · 04/07/2018 09:49

I screamed and shouted with joy last night. Can't remember when I last did that! And I have a generally lovely very middle class life! We all watched the match together as a family, it was brilliant.
