My 5 week old baby has a purple ish rash on one arm but is otherwise fine - awake, alert, just fed.

If you roll a glass over it, does it disappear? If not, phone A&E straight away.

anotherangel2 · 03/07/2018 12:09

Heat rash?
Does it blanch with a glass over it?

If you ring your GP they will see you today.

zaalitje · 03/07/2018 12:10

Posted too soon, additional pics attached.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Does it fade if you press a glass on it?
Does he have a temperature?

If he's not showing any signs of being otherwise unwell could it be heat rash?

He is so little if you are at all worried I would ring 111/GP for advice. They won't mind seeing him at all.

zaalitje · 03/07/2018 12:12

GP closed till later.
He's no other concerning symptoms temp is 36.9, he's awake, alert, active, happy and feeding.
Will check with glass (just need to find one not bloody coloured!)

You can do it with your finger, you just need to be able to see if the skin is blanching. So press quite firmly and if it does not go white and then normal colour again please go straight to the hospital.

If you are at all worried you should just go to the hospital anyway.

Buddyelf · 03/07/2018 12:20

Just use your finger - press and release and you'll see if it blanches. At his age I would probably get any rash checked out by GP or walk in.

Luckymummy22 · 03/07/2018 12:20

He’s 5 weeks old. Don’t mess about. Phone 111 if GP is closed. They are always happy to see young kids. And he is still so little and things can change so quickly.
Good chance it is heat rash

JustJoinedRightNow · 03/07/2018 12:22

Actually yes agree with LuckyMummy - just don’t chance it. Go to the hospital and get it checked out.

Queenofthestress · 03/07/2018 12:22

At 5 weeks, I would get them checked anyway as they can turn at the drop of a hat

PinstripeElephant · 03/07/2018 12:24

Fairly sure that's heat rash. But GP or 111 to confirm. At this age it's not worth taking chances, and any healthcare professional would agree Smile

Sleepyandtired21 · 03/07/2018 12:28

It looks like heat rash or maybe eczema, as long as it vanishes and everything else looks okay. If you have ANY worries go straight to a&e or walk in clinic

Amanduh · 03/07/2018 12:30

Looks like heat rash. I’d get it checked though at Gp when they open

AndBabyMakes3 · 03/07/2018 12:33

Looks like heat rash to me too but best to get checked out to be 100% sure. Hope all is ok

zaalitje · 03/07/2018 12:38

Rash doesn't blanch.

40+ miles from hospital with very variable public transport, no walk in centre either - live very rurally.

Managed to get hold of someone at GP, receptionist has passed message to GP with all details - who will call back after 3 when afternoon surgery starts to triage and decide if he needs to be seen.

I don't rate 111 everything I have ever called them the response has been A&E, even when asking about mixing paracetamol and ibuprofen for a bad toothache. And everything I've followed their advice have had A&E staff annoyed that I'm wasting time.

A non-blanching rash in a newborn needs immediate medical attention.
Do not wait.

Gierg · 03/07/2018 12:42

Definitely ring 111 for a non blanching rash!

It shouldnt wait!

Rinoachicken · 03/07/2018 12:42

A non blanching rash is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Call an ambulance or get him to hospital. NOW

Rinoachicken · 03/07/2018 12:43

Get a taxi if you don’t have a car.

tealandteal · 03/07/2018 12:43

If the rash doesn't blanch call 111 and see if they can make you an appointment so you are not waiting for ages when you arrive. They can also get an on call GP to call you, usually within 20 minutes in my experience. They can then make a referral to a specific department if appropriate or advise. Please don't wait.

PinstripeElephant · 03/07/2018 12:44

OP - do you have a neighbour you could ask to drive you to the hospital?

I really wouldn't wait till 3. You need to be seen NOW. I'm sure it's nothing serious, but it isn't worth the risk.

MagicFajita · 03/07/2018 12:44

Get to A and E , get him checked. Do not wait until 3 o'clock.

Buddyelf · 03/07/2018 12:45

OP - if the rash doesn't blanch than 999 now

notWORKzilla · 03/07/2018 12:46

DO NOT WAIT with a 5 week old with a non blanching rash.
