My 5 week old baby has a purple ish rash on one arm but is otherwise fine - awake, alert, just fed.

If the rash is non blanching you need to go to A&E NOW. Don't wait for the GP. Go.

Even if it turns out to be nothing A&E would rather see you than not

WigglyBlossom · 03/07/2018 12:58

999 not 111 for non blanching rash.

WigglyBlossom · 03/07/2018 12:59

Don't wait OP, ring 999 now!

unintentionalthreadkiller · 03/07/2018 13:03

Call an ambulance or a cab at the very least for a non blanching rash in a baby that small.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/07/2018 13:06

He's no other concerning symptoms temp is 36.9, he's awake, alert, active, happy and feeding My DC (4yrs) was like that when I took him to GP in morning; 3 hours later waiting for hospital admission he was inert and limp - not meningitis, and treatable - but if a 4-year old can change that quickly, then a 5 week old can too. Whatever you decide to do, keep a very close eye on him.

Flossy856 · 03/07/2018 13:11

Shocked your GP would triage a 5 week old, my practices policy is to see young babies no question asked. Please get medical attention asap

Rinoachicken · 03/07/2018 13:13

Flossy856 me too, and that they would just tell the OP dial 999 when told the baby has a non-blanching rash.

Please call 111/ 999 OP. He’s so young and they can get sick very quickly at that age. One of my children was very ill twice when they were only a few weeks old - started off as a high fever. Called 111 both times saw gp and sent straight to hospital for a full septic screen. They don’t take any chances with them at that age so they won’t think you are over reacting.

Witchend · 03/07/2018 13:47

Don't panick. Yes, get it checked out, but it is one of the later symptoms of meningitis so if it was he'd be visibly ill by now. Don't rely on it-reply on the other symptoms. Too many people assume it can't be meningitis because there is no rash when the rash doesn't always appear and if it does it's later on.

It looks like heat rash to me, but my ds from about 8 weeks onwards used to get viral rashes that were non-blanching. If he was alert and reasonably happy then the medics weren't too worried except on the time the rash was spreading rapidly.
