The above is a quote from The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, said by Lord Elrond. At this stage, with POTUS practically pissing off every ally the US has while cosying up with several dictators, it seems quite apt.

Key point about RU stealing Hillary's analytics.

To expand a bit: you could run scenarios against her data to find situations where it would return the same results for different input. Brute-force detect edge cases where her model would fail. Like where to run ads in Wisconsin so that her model wouldn’t see support softening.

Thanks for drawing attention to that Guardian Kakutani article, lion. It is fightening to be reminded how so many warnings have been out there for so long. And then that horrible confluence of events, malign actors, useful idiots and self serving politicians occurred, and look where we are.
From the article:
'As Hannah Arendt wrote in her 1951 book The Origins of Totalitarianism, “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (ie the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (ie the standards of thought) no longer exist.” '

' the scholar Tom Nichols wrote in The Death of Expertise that a wilful hostility towards established knowledge had emerged on both the right and the left, with people aggressively arguing that “every opinion on any matter is as good as every other”. Ignorance was now fashionable.'

Renee Diresta 'We are long past merely partisan filter bubbles and well into the realm of siloed communities that experience their own reality and operate with their own facts”. At this point, she concludes, “the internet doesn’t just reflect reality any more; it shapes it” '

'(Trumps) lies, the journalist Masha Gessen has pointed out, are told for the same reason that Vladimir Putin lies: “to assert power over truth itself”. '

And, I've never seen this reported before:
Precise words, like facts, mean little to Trump, as interpreters, who struggle to translate his grammatical anarchy, can attest. Chuck Todd, the anchor of NBC’s Meet the Press, observed that after several of his appearances as a candidate Trump would lean back in his chair and ask the control booth to replay his segment on a monitor – without sound: “He wants to see what it all looked like. He will watch the whole thing on mute. "

Yet again, the Trump administration accuses others of their own faults Hmm (Not saying they're wrong about Nicaragua, btw, just that they've got some cheek coming across as so sanctimonious here - especially given their record of meddling in Nicaraguan politics in the 1980s.)

The Trump administration called for new leadership in Nicaragua, charging that the government of President Daniel Ortega has hollowed out democratic institutions, won’t cooperate with international human rights investigators and directed state security forces to violently suppress protests.

"complex" is Not an opinion, really, is it, more like a statement of fact!

I bet Trump never heard of the Iran-Contra affair.

Not strictly relevant to Trump, but...

If this is true, isn't it rather significant for actual democracy and stuff? ShockShockShock

Labour HQ used Facebook ads to deceive Jeremy Corbyn during election campaign
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/labour-hq-used-facebook-ads-to-deceive-jeremy-corbyn-during-election-campaign-grlx75c27

Labour officials ran a secret operation to deceive Jeremy Corbyn at last year’s general election, micro-targeting Facebook adverts at the leader and his closest aides to convince them the party was running the campaign they demanded.

Campaign chiefs at Labour HQ hoodwinked their own leader because they disapproved of some of Corbyn’s left-wing messages.

They convinced him they were following his campaign plans by spending just £5,000 on adverts solely designed to be seen by Corbyn, his aides and their favourite journalists, while pouring far more money into adverts with a different message for ordinary voters.

The Trump/Putin meeting will likely happen while I’m asleep so hopefully, when I wake up, the world will still be there in its current form Smile

It's what El Pres. would have to do to 'get along' with Russia that is the crux of the matter.
Robert Costa
@costareports
Ahead of Putin meeting and following DOJ indictment, Pres. Trump said "I can't tell you that," when asked by @piersmorgan if Putin is a dictator. "I assume he probably is. But I could name others also. Look, if we can get along with Russia that’s a good thing," Trump said.
