To think that braces have became a fashion trend?

Everyone in Britain seems to have or have had them. Are they trendy?

I don't think so. My two DC had them because they were necessary. They weren't very nice to have fitted after they had teeth out and the adjustments were painful, plus it was a PITA going every 6 weeks for years on end.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 02/07/2018 23:18

I always wanted braces as a kid, train tracks with the coloured bands looked so cooool. But then friends started getting them and it seemed painful. I also want glasses (got now!) and a plaster cast 🤷🏻‍♀️

RhythmStix · 02/07/2018 23:19

Yes you are being unreasonable and silly. Not to mention hyperbolic.

accendo · 02/07/2018 23:20

I've just paid $8000 for my daughter's braces. That's an expensive trend!

LarryFreakinStylinson · 02/07/2018 23:22

Certainly my daughter looked forward to getting hers on. Two years down the line the novelty has worn off. I’d deffo say they are no longer seen as something to take the piss out of the way they were when I was a kid.

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/07/2018 23:23

All my dcs had braces. One kiddo still in braces. Is a pita because hospital clinic is in city and we live in the sticks. Grr.

Criteria for nhs orthodontics is really tight nowadays, maybe the everyone you know goes private?

Babyroobs · 02/07/2018 23:23

Not sure about a fashion trend. My 17 year old ds was very glad to have his removed this week.

BlackForestCake · 02/07/2018 23:26

Wish they'd been "trendy" when I was a kid. I wish I’d had them, my teeth are really crooked.

UrsulaPandress · 02/07/2018 23:29

I agree. Everyone wants perfect teeth. Dd had them as her previously perfect gnashers had started to move slightly.

Deshasafraisy · 02/07/2018 23:37

I think you’re right, I know a few of woman that have got them all of a sudden.

Andromeida59 · 03/07/2018 00:13

Certainly not a fashion trend but many older people are getting them now. I've just had mine off today but had them for five years. Definitely not an accessory.

xsquared · 03/07/2018 00:20

Very expensive and painful (at least to begin with), for a trend. It's not the braces that's being worn as a fashion accessory, it's the smile at the end of however many months it takes to achieve it.

Perhaps many women are now wearing them because they regret not having braces to fix their teeth when they were younger, which would have been free then.

MentalUnload · 03/07/2018 02:56

This thread makes me think of the 212 Azealia Banks video, huge white teeth! Not sure this is the right place to ask about cutting edge trends tbh?

Monty27 · 03/07/2018 03:03

No! Not trendy at all. Dental care is a health issue and has been promoted thank goodness, so much so that people are not ashamed to wear braces as it was in the past.

As well as improving overall bite and health of teeth, braces are the most straightforward way of radically improving your looks.

stayathomer · 03/07/2018 03:28

I wish I'd got them when I was younger-I have horrific teeth. Always did but never mentioned. Must ask dm

Bestbe · 03/07/2018 05:45

DD is in her second year of braces. All her treatment has been done at the hospital because her teeth were so awful. The difference is amazing.
The great thing is that it’s completely normal now to have braces so she has had no negative comments. Without the treatment she would have had awful looking teeth but also a lot of pain in the future. It’s been hard going every 6 weeks for so long and she hasn’t finished yet. I’m forever grateful to the NHS for the treatment.

SharronNeedles · 03/07/2018 06:37

I remember being made fun of because I didn't have them! Apparently it meant we were poor

YayImALlamaAgain · 03/07/2018 06:43

I think you’re right, I know a few of woman that have got them all of a sudden.

I’m absolutely certain that the women you know who have braces got them because they want straight teeth, not because they are following a fashion trend Wink

Ethelswith · 03/07/2018 06:45

One DC had them, following a dental operation. He was under two NHS consultants at a major teaching hospital, was on 'watchful wait,
as he grew, then had several years of fixed braces which have just been swooped for retainiers.

The NHS doesn't fund fashion trends, nor operate for the fun of it. It's been 9 years of treatment so far, but only one more to go.

Other DC has been reviewed by orthodontist twice, and will have one further assessment in late teens. She is unlikely to need treatment (thank goodness!)

seventhgonickname · 03/07/2018 09:08

I think for adults it's more realising they're not just for children.Ihave them if I could afford it as my teeth are on the move as I have got older.

Sparklesocks · 03/07/2018 10:32

I don't think they're trendy as such.
I do think there's less stigma about adult braces now, a lot more adults seem to be getting them so it's not as unusual as it was for them to get them 10-15 years ago. Makes sense if you want to correct the issues you maybe weren't bothered about as a teen (or didn't wear your retainer!) and have the extra income to do it.

givenchycallsmyname · 03/07/2018 15:27

Every time you see a teen, they usually have those unsightly traintracks, if I had to get them, I would get invisalign, instead of those eyesores!

Reading that back it sounds a bit rude. I didn't read that back. Sorry!

But with the train tracks you get to choose the colour of the rubber bands!
