Everyone in Britain seems to have or have had them. Are they trendy?

I'm debating whether to get them (age 48); my teeth have sashayed to the right a bit, creating a snaggle tooth that's getting worse.

I'm just at the end of an implant surgery - have a mouthful of stitches as I type due to a gum graft - and this was done out of necessity, but also because now I can afford it.

givenchycallsmyname · 03/07/2018 15:59

@wink1970 get Invisalign. It is invisible and is proven to work better. Google it. I know because I researched it for a family member who was considering train tracks.

@Wink I’ve just started down the road on getting my implants and I was asked at the initial consultation if I planned on having braces as implants would not move the way natura teeth do.

I have three teenagers, live in the US, and none have had braces.

Apparently this is unheard of!

ErictheGuineaPig · 03/07/2018 16:13

God yes, those stupid teenagers with their NHS issue train tracks. They look so stupid, why don't they just magic up a few thousand for better braces? Or if they can't afford that then at least they should stop going round smiling at people as if they're proud of their dentistry. The losers.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/07/2018 16:14

I'm of an age where perfect teeth was considered a sign that you had false teeth. Everyone knows my teeth are my own!

TalkinPeace · 03/07/2018 16:15

Braces as a teenager prevent horrific dental bills due to misaligned teeth later in life.
Braces are an investment against dental bills for the following decades.

The USA started it
the rest of the world has cottoned on.

Neither of my kids has had / needed braces.

One of my tax clients had all hit top teeth pulled aged 55 because the decay from misalignment was too sever.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 03/07/2018 16:15

Invisalign doesn’t work for very overcrowded teeth. It only works for slightly wonky ones.

You’re being ridiculous.

I had braces that hurt like fury - it was either that or have a LOT Of teeth pulled out and have expensive dental treatment for the rest of my life

doing them on kids whose jaws are still growing means that the teeth settle firmly in a proper alignment and stay healthier for the next 70 years

ErictheGuineaPig · 03/07/2018 16:19

Mine weren't that painful at all, just needed some paracetamol the first day. Same for my daughter.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/07/2018 16:19

No, not for cosmetic reasons on the NHS. That is a side benefit. It is to stop dental problems in later life.

ElBandito · 03/07/2018 16:26

You are right OP the world was much better when you could identify a true Brit by their bad teeth Hmm
