To want to leave BT?

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 16:11

Saw it on the news the other day and just had the email to say they are putting their prices up yet again! They last did it in January of this year.

Had enough, want to go to sky would save £18 a month. My contract isn't up until January next year.

I'm sure I saw that dude from this morning - Martin someone - say that as soon as you receive confirmation from them of price increase - you can leave, you just have to give notice. They are breaking their contract which means you have every right to leave.

The email states if I'm in the minimum contract term you can leave - I don't have a clue what the minimum term is - google isn't helping.

Does anyone know? I want to ring them but need to know my rights before I do as they will more than likely fob me off like they did in January when I rang up to complain. I always find bt so rude when I ring them so I need to know more info before I give them hell....

Watching with interest... I’m in exactly the same position!

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 16:21

@mumtomaxwell I just can't justify staying with them! Including January's price increase it's going to be an extra £7/8 a month. And for what? They say they are improving their services but nothing has changed lol.

I know sky can be just as bad with price increases but they do really good deals to bring your price down. If you ring them and say you want to leave, they always give you a pretty good discount - we are saving £16 on sky tv a month at the min.

With bt they said I could save £1.05 a month but that would mean signing up for another 2 years...no thank you lol!

SluttyButty · 02/07/2018 16:27

Ive not had an email yet. I'll await that joy then. The robbing bastards cost a fortune yet our internet keeps dropping out!

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 16:30

@SluttyButty yeah they are so expensive but so crap lol. I just want to be able to ring them and know that I can leave....so when they say 'well you've got 6 months left in your contract' I can quite happily say 'so what you greedy thieving twats, I'm off' however I don't know if this is actually the case or not lol

If it's any help when Virgin put their prices up I was advised to phone as I was entitled to cancel (I think you have 30 days from the date they officially tell you by email or post).

I did phone up and they did say I was entitled to cancel (I still had 12 months left on the contact) but I was weak and they managed to sweet talk me into staying. I did however manage to get the increase taken off each month, they put it down as credit so I never actually paid the increase so you could try that.

CrustyCob · 02/07/2018 16:54

I'm watching this with interest. We have had nothing but trouble with BT, and Broadband is always going off. Dreadful.

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 16:58

I'll make the call either tonight or tomorrow and come back with how I get on. I feel there is going to be a catch somewhere as this is the second price increase in a year, I feel a lot aren't going to be happy but I don't think they will make it easy for you to leave.

CrustyCob · 02/07/2018 17:07

oooh thanks OP. Flowers
My adult son set it up for me as a present. So he pays the bill, and is the account holder.

That means, as he is away from home, no one from BT will ever speak to me, as: I am "not the account holder".

There is a letter here for him from BT, so I presume it's the price increase.

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 17:12

@CrustyCob no problem. It most likely will be from them, they were sending out letters and emails in June and the price increase starts in September. Mine is only £2.50 a month but over all it's been increased by about £8 a month in the 3 years I've been with them. No 'improvements' whatsoever ever

Looks like you can leave as long as you let them know within a certain time frame 👍🏻

CrustyCob · 02/07/2018 18:14

Thanks so much @arghhhhhhh
I've opened the letter with a/c holder permission.Wink
Yep, it's a price increase. He has got until August sometime, to cancel. 30 days notice or 14 days if going to another provider.

They want us to ring them, no doubt, so that they can blag a big sell.

The letter offers to lock you in to the existing price if you ring them ,and extend your contract, by the looks of it. [hmmm]

Son's here tomorrow pm, so will get him to ring. Will report back. I'm very grateful to you for posting. They have driven me nearly bonkers this year.

mumtomaxwell · 02/07/2018 18:16

@arghhhhhhh I’ve just noticed my email gives me 30 days to get out.

I normally am so lazy about this kind of thing and have usually got great deals out of them because I’ve stayed loyal for about 12 years!!! But recently two price rises and a shit service that just gets worse is making me rethink...

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 02/07/2018 18:17

I find BT extremely expensive, unfortunately I am rather stuck as for some reason no one else had coverage available to me in my area. It fucks me right off

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 18:23

@CrustyCob no problem at all, I'm glad I could help!

I'll be ringing them too tomorrow.

If I'm honest, I just want my tv, broadband etc all in one bill. I find BT way too expensive as it is and I've seen sky are doing a really good deal - probably to tempt customers away from bt! - and I just want to save the money.

Bt are so overpriced and you get nothing for your money.

We were getting free bt sports which we should of had until the end of our contract. Then in January they decided to charge £3.50 for it on top of putting their broadband and line rental price up. They said we could have it for free again but only if we signed up another 2 years.

I think this is part of it though, they put up the prices, people complain and they say 'oh we will reduce it then if you renew your contract'

OP posts:
Limpopobongo · 02/07/2018 18:25

What are we talking about though? line rental plus ADSL internet services?

BT will get better and why? Because the useless twat of a CEO that has mired the company for the past few years is finally being kicked out.

Most people now only need their line for internet as so many use mobiles.

arghhhhhhh · 02/07/2018 18:26

@MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood yes this was me too! The only provider that gave unlimited fibre whatever it was in my area. But so much for expensive! So went with them and been tied in ever since. Fortunately I can get unlimited with sky now. Feel your pain!

OP posts:
Millybingbong · 02/07/2018 18:31

I want this too.

What providers are we looking at for fibre? Can I buy by sport as a separate standalone?

Limpopobongo · 02/07/2018 18:44

Vodafone were doing some great deals on fibre not long ago.

VOD are looking to diversify into home services such as fixed line and data because the mobile phone business whilst being huge, needs support from other revenue streams.

I think the day is not too far off when providers will push heavily on fibre until it becomes the norm and ADSL will be almost given away.

I have ADSL and can hold a 7 MB line which is plenty for me.

BT can seem to be put out there as Mr nasty which is often unfair. You see they have the dual job of selling home and business services such as phone lines and data AND they are charged by the regulator to roll out high speed data to more and more of the population.

The other players such as sky,,well they dont have to do that so they can just cherry pick.

We often see ill informed media guff about how crap BT is and villagers saying stuff like,,my BB is crap and BT wont fix it.

Well thats true. What company do you know in this world who would deploy teams of workers to install thousands and thousands of pounds of fibre infrastructure to some remote village only for half a dozen houses to sign up for a £20pm fibre package ? It would be insanty and thats why they dont do it. There is no ROI. It is financial suicide.

But go ask Shy/Virgin/Vodafone/Plusnet etc if they would do it?? no they would laugh until they ruptured their spleens then put the phone down,,yet the media just picks on poor old Beatty..

Anyway i digress,,moving on..

Hurray!
" Free at last, free at last!"
The account holder rang up BT.
He said that we wanted to cancel due to price increase. (important) Our contract was running until mid 2019 I think.

Hard sell person offered us the same price, if we took out a longer contract. Kept pushing, kept saying no.
Got a bit arsey with son tbh. Be prepared for a bit of a firm exchange.

Thirty days notice given, got a date for final payment, and confirmed NO penalty charge.
( I think if you have another provider set up, it might be 14 days and other provider will help in the transfer, but not sure)

BT want their equipment back (lol) and are sending Parcelforce to pick it up on a set date, between 9 and 5. It will be on the step BT.

I'll be on away on hols after that anyway. Returning to Post Office Broadband for £17 for a year (which seems to be the strongest and cheapest round here), Freeview, and Radio 4.

Result! Thank you OP! Flowers Ta Dah!

p.s. I did appreciate you setting me up with BT, son, but your money is best spent paying off your mortgage.

CrustyCob · 03/07/2018 16:42

Correction Blush
Post Office Broadband is £17 per month for a year NOT £17 for a year.
Sorry all, I got carried away.Grin

arghhhhhhh · 03/07/2018 16:45

@CrustyCob thanks so much for this! I haven't had chance to do it yet - planning on it later though. So glad you were able to cancel. I'm prepared to go in full force when I ring them later :-)

arghhhhhhh · 03/07/2018 16:45

@CrustyCob and £17 a month is a really good deal!

I've done some research tonight too. The fly in the ointment seems to be bt sport which DH likes...
