People, their children and babies with no sun hats

Was at Alton Towers yesterday, DD was visiting with a friend and her GF was working, so I was right by the entrance for an hour in the morning as park opened, then an hour as park closed (4:30-5:30). It was high 20s/low 30s.

I was astounded at the amount of people of all ages be it teens, young adults and families, some with toddlers/youngsters on shoulders/in strollers and babbas in prams. There were so few sun hats being worn, and could clearly see sunburn on those with exposed shoulders/backs and arms. I mean it's fair enough if you want to take these chances but young children are reliant on a sensible adult to protect them.

Or I'm talking crap?

Agree with the pps - OP if you can give us the solution for keeping toddlers hats on their heads, I'd love to hear it!

Spudlet · 02/07/2018 14:01

I found the holy grail... a hat that DS actually likes (it's a Hey Duggee one). But it still gets chucked off when he's feeling naughty.

The other day it blew away at the zoo and, I thought, went into an enclosure. I almost cried. Fortunately it wasn't in with the animals so a nice member of staff was able to get it for me without being eaten. I don't think he understood just why I was quite so grateful.

If he loses it properly we're fucked - they seem to have sold out 😱

I posted a photo of a great canopy but as it was on the Amazon site it showed my name and address!
I’ll try again.

DS would never keep a hat on under the age of 3! In the end I found ones with chin straps stayed on because even though they could be removed easily, something about the strap seem to make him think he couldn't just fling it off!

Sundance65 · 02/07/2018 14:33

Jesus - its hard enough trying to keep any clothes on our 2 year old never mind a hat - blimey if she has pants on round Tesco's I feel like I'm winning!!

coffeeforone · 02/07/2018 14:40

My 2 year old DS has only just started to keep his sun hat on this week, after over 2 months of continuous persistence. Nice to know I've been being judged by strangers for the past two months. He has never burnt though.

In the winter he would just not wear a hat either, he hated it - tried several times a day for 4 months. I never gave up but its difficult when they just pull it off the second you put it back on.

Witchend · 02/07/2018 17:46

I found staples worked well...

Actually I was quite lucky. Dd1 and ds loved hats. Dd2 as long as you put sunglasses on at the same time she would remove the sunglasses and forget she had a hat on too. Although she rarely had shoes or socks on even in winter.

Pengggwn · 02/07/2018 17:48

I get my DD (18 months) to wear her hat like this: "Put your hat on and you can get out of the buggy... Put your hat back on or you go back in the buggy."

You'd think I was threatening to roast her. Grin

crispysausagerolls · 02/07/2018 17:53

Not as bad as all the idiots who cover their pram with a Muslin cloth - making the temp inside the buggy much hotter, AND making sure they can’t see their baby = double whammy of great parenting!

I do judge babies who are burning without hats but I understand they can just repeatedly throw them off so it’s not necessarily the parent’s fault.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2018 17:53

I superglued a hat to my ," Babba's", head.
Can't believe the test of you didn't.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2018 17:54

Rest.
Ffs sake auto correct.

MyBreadIsEggy · 02/07/2018 17:57

I’ve got two toddlers who will not keep hats on no matter how many times I put them back on.
I’ve taken to French plaiting my 3yo’s hair and spraying her scalp with a fuck ton of suncream to make sure she doesn’t burn. The Boy is having none of it - I do carry him in a sling most of the time though which has a nifty little light-weight hood which can keep the sun off him.

MyBreadIsEggy · 02/07/2018 17:58

Plus, my kids are half Asian.....so don’t really burn anyway. Regardless, I protect their skin with factor 50.
They are both running around with rocking t-shirt tans at the moment!

cmlover · 02/07/2018 18:00

at nursery our 2 to 5 year olds are very good at keeping their hats on as there told if they don't wear one they don't go out to play. unless there is is a reason not to.

how ever my two would never wear one as they said it hurt, hats give me a headache so I understand not wanting to wear one.

WittyJack · 02/07/2018 18:05

Glad it’s not just me! The little baby wears a hat. The toddler simply won’t.

Apart from today.

When that was all she would wear Hmm

crispysausagerolls · 02/07/2018 18:17

When that was all she would wear

😂😂😂😂

Windbeneathmybingowings · 02/07/2018 18:59

Wow, looking at that graph, all the commercial sunshade things were hotter than a muslin Shock

perfectstorm · 02/07/2018 19:05

I have asked paediatricians and dermatologists, and so far the answer has always been not to put any such product on a baby. Good enough for me to reassure us we were doing things right.

I love Mumsnet sometimes. The rabid determination to never, ever, under any circumstances, back down an inch can be unintentionally hilarious.

crispysausagerolls · 02/07/2018 19:14

No covers are good - including the snoozeshade

Perfectstorm the very same poster said this

If you need to read reviews to get a minimum of common sense it's a bit of a worry! I did read reviews before buying all my baby's equipment, but some things should be obvious for normal parents, shouldn't they?

So when I read trusted reviews I am abnormal but when they get reviews and advice, it’s fine.

As wind said, the graph shows that all of the pram covers increased the heat. I guess I just don’t have basic common sense Grin

crispysausagerolls · 02/07/2018 19:21

Mymycherrypie

Sorry - I posted the same graph as you! Somehow missed your link 🙈

Daddynosharing · 02/07/2018 19:21

I have a three year old and a 10 month old. They seem to manage to keep their hats on. A bit of perseverance and distracting them helps. And we always wear one too so it’s the norm to them.

Sirzy · 02/07/2018 19:24

Ds is 8 and due to his autism has a lot of sensory needs. Any kind of hat is a massive no for him. We have managed to find a suncream he will tolerate thankfully. Shorts are also a no!

FairiesAndChocolate · 02/07/2018 19:25

Tip for keeping toddlers hat on:

Buy ribbon and sew it on then tie the hat on DC head.
