People, their children and babies with no sun hats

Was at Alton Towers yesterday, DD was visiting with a friend and her GF was working, so I was right by the entrance for an hour in the morning as park opened, then an hour as park closed (4:30-5:30). It was high 20s/low 30s.

I was astounded at the amount of people of all ages be it teens, young adults and families, some with toddlers/youngsters on shoulders/in strollers and babbas in prams. There were so few sun hats being worn, and could clearly see sunburn on those with exposed shoulders/backs and arms. I mean it's fair enough if you want to take these chances but young children are reliant on a sensible adult to protect them.

Or I'm talking crap?

I have seen people asking what suntan lotion to put on a newborn... the sheer stupidity of some parents is astonishing.

Seeing parents with oversized sunglasses, whilst the babies is squinting in the sun makes me very uncomfortable too.

The rest is sheer laziness from the parents. There's not ONE child in my kids primary schools not wearing a hat, not one. They don't have a choice, and there's no problem. It was the same at nursery. Sometimes it's a battle, but you have to insist until they wear it. Would you let your child run in the middle of the road? Of course not, you will never put him in danger. It proves that when you really want them to do or not do something, you find a way.

glintandglide · 02/07/2018 11:20

You are talking crap in the sense that it’s none of your business. You sound really judgemental. Don’t forget you do loads of things strangers could judge you about.

nomorespaghetti · 02/07/2018 11:34

There's not ONE child in my kids primary schools not wearing a hat, not one. They don't have a choice, and there's no problem it's easy for a teacher or nursery worker to follow through on a threat of "hat, or you go inside", but if a family have just paid the entry fee for Alton towers and the 2 year old won't keep a hat on, do you expect them to turn around and leave, wasting all that money and ruining everyone's day? I've followed through on a consequence before with my 2 year old that brought her right into line ("wear a coat or we can't go to soft play"... it was pouring), but I'd never issue a consequence that i wasn't willing to follow through on. And if I'd just got to Alton towers i wouldn't be willing to follow through on a "no hat, no day out" consequence. Sometimes you've got to pick your battles.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 11:37

Sometimes you've got to pick your battles.

exactly my point, your child doesn't wear your hat because you are not bothered one way or another, which is your problem. My kids wear hats, but I don't think they are a magic prevention for heatstroke or sunburn, not keeping them in the full sun for hours is better.

I just don't buy the parents who claim that their parents don't want a hat, if you want them to wear one, they will. We never see naked kids running around in the street, parents seem to manage clothes!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 11:38

*their CHILDREN don't want a hat Hmm

Soubriquet · 02/07/2018 11:38

Yep.

Mine will wear hats initially and then it gets thrown off as soon as they can.

I do always use a sunshade when mine are in a pushchair

Pebblespony · 02/07/2018 11:41

Why is it stupidity to ask what suntan lotion for a newborn?

Funny that... it's as if clothes are harder for children (toddlers in particular) to take off independantly.

Well done you for being a perfect parent and having the most perfect children Star

GerdaLovesLili · 02/07/2018 11:45

One of our local toddlers hasn't worn a stitch for the last two weeks! The moment their front door opens, he's off with one of his parents in hot pursuit!

Soubriquet · 02/07/2018 11:46

I personally wouldn't put suntan lotion on a newborn as I wouldn't let them be in the sun.

Like I said I use a sunshade for the buggies. Not a parasol type umbrella a black netted type thing that fits on the pushchair snugly and is 97% UV resistant

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 11:47

FormerlyFrikadela01

don't be daft, I just don't need to come up with excuses to justify my parenting choices.

Pebblespony · 02/07/2018 11:47

So, if I just tell my 11 month old to wear a hat she will? Does this work in other areas of life too like not touching the fire and leaving the dog alone? Brilliant! I've been worrying over nothing.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 11:48

Why is it stupidity to ask what suntan lotion for a newborn?

because you shouldn't put your newborn in the sun in the first place? Shade doesn't stop the sun completely as it is, that's more than enough for them for the first months of their life. Why would anyone want to put babies in the sun, even in the UK?

Pebblespony · 02/07/2018 11:50

I put sun cream on my newborn as I was on my own, couldn't drive and needed to go to the shop. What do you suggest I do? Stock up during the winter and then never go out? Go out only at night?

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 11:54

What do you suggest I do?

you could do what the rest of us do, keep them in a pram with the hood up, turned against the sun and use a special sun net if their legs are not in the shade?

I can't see the issue, even when you have to do the school run for the others, I've never had a baby in the sun. Why do people make their life more complicated?

rainingcatsanddog · 02/07/2018 11:59

Suntan lotion is the opposite of sunblock.

Pebblespony · 02/07/2018 11:59

Because were not all as great as you?

Mymycherrypie · 02/07/2018 12:00

I do put suntan lotion on my baby because he has to be with me on the walk to school and the sun shade cannot be effective at every single angle. Sometimes a foot will be in the sun and it needs protection too.

As for the hats, you can tie them on but then you have a chance of your child being garrotted by the string if they pull them off and it gets caught on something.

As for the outrage at what everyone else is doing, calm down or you will spend the rest of your life angry. I’m sure I could come to your home and pick holes in everything that you do.

Mymycherrypie · 02/07/2018 12:02

As for sun nets, they aren’t entirely breathable and create heat inside the hood.

FatSally · 02/07/2018 12:06

I just don't buy the parents who claim that their parents don't want a hat, if you want them to wear one, they will

Don't be so bloody stupid.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 02/07/2018 12:08

As for sun nets, they aren’t entirely breathable and create heat inside the hood.

which is why normal parents don't put their pram in the full sun, but they are useful if you need extra shade when walking down a road and hood and reversed pram are not enough to cover the legs...

CanaBanana · 02/07/2018 12:09

Why is it stupidity to ask what suntan lotion for a newborn? because you shouldn't put your newborn in the sun in the first place?
I don't put my baby in the sun. That's why I put suntan lotion on him - to keep the sun off. Even when sitting in the shade there's still some UV bouncing around, so he needs suntan lotion to protect his skin.

Mookatron · 02/07/2018 12:10

With sun hats, if you keep putting it back on when they take it off they will eventually wear it but I was never sure if this was due to my determination or just the kid getting older 😉

Helps of you wear one yourself, of course.

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 02/07/2018 12:10

On Friday I went out a 40 minute walk with my 1 year old. Half way through I realised she'd thrown her hat out the pram so I put the spare one on that I had with me and by the time I got home she'd thrown that one away as well. The next day we went out to the park for the day with another hat on and she managed to throw that one away too. I have to go out to the shop in a bit and she will have no hat on as I don't have another. She's always covered in factor 50 though.
