I am a very occasional drinker.
If i averaged it out over a year id say i have two glasses of wine a week with meals. I dont really engage in pub culture,i.e going in pubs regularly to drink.
Anyway the other night I was out with some friends and just had a couple of pints over the evening.

One of the party just happened to be buying drinks and asked if id like one. I already had a glass of beer so indicated i was ok.

Anyway the reaction was as if i had made a derogatory comment about his wife ! Giving me strange looks ,asking what was wrong with me , querying whether i wasnt "enjoying myself" ,etc etc..

How incredibly boring..anyway i just reaffirmed my choice but it still continued until i simply told him to feck off..

Has anyone else encountered this boring pub culture behaviour?

I agree, it's so annoying. I rarely drink and my DH is allergic to alcohol so never drinks. We live in Asia right now and the "drink, drink, drink" culture is even worse here.

I went out for a meal with my work colleagues once and had a headache so didn't want to drink and I swear the conversation never deviated from "why aren't you drinking?" "Look how much we're drinking" "Down it!" etc. Very tedious.

I feel very sorry for DH who can't even sip on one drink all night to shut everyone up.

I agree a couple of glasses of wine a week is pretty regular. I'll not drink most of the time but will have a glass or two on special occasions like weddings and Christmas.

I remember when I was 21 I was at work, it was a long drive to and from work and my boss organised drinks for my birthday at the local pub (I didn’t want a fuss).
Woman there was trying to get me to drink. I told her I had to drive home in 4 hours time.
“Oh it would be out of your system then”
“It’s your 21st, everyone drinks”
“One won’t hurt”

Every time I politely declined. In the end I said something like “why are you trying to get me to drink and drive?”, with HR in earshot.

Veggies do get the comments too.
Alcohol comments are usually made by people insecure about their own drinking levels and realise that they will seem silly next to a sober personthey also have little to no filter or inhibition.. which hello thats the effect of booze, they then can utter out whatever they think as they think they are being funny, charming... all BS to the sober person. Its basically because of how they see their own drinking and the effect of booze on their system in that moment.

Thanks all,,i also just remembered that on the very same night i had the damned impertinence to order a half pint of beer.

Me> Half a pint of Moretti please?

Pretty bar tender says certainly and begins to dispense same..

Male colleague > What ? Half a beer? Ive ner heard that before. I dont know anyone who drinks half pints.

Me> You do now !

Attractive bar tender catches my eye and smiles..

PS I dont drink two glasses of wine a week every single week of the year . Just thought id mention that again..
