Was the shopkeeper unreasonable

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 16:48

Yesterday I had to return a rather large package to amazon and in order to do this I had to go to a corner shop so they could take it when I went in the shopkeeper was scanning a many packets of individual crisps which took about 5 minutes then the moment I told her I had an amazon return she immediately told me how it was too large for them to take and that I need to get it picked up. So was she unreasonable for not tell me it was too large when I came inside the shop whilst she was scanning the many crisps and are amazon unreasonable for letting shops like this fulfill returns when they can only take small packages.

I work at a DPD drop off point and we have dimensions and weight limits. Anything above/heavier than that and we will refuse to accept it. Sounds like she has similar.

Not sure what the crisps have to do with anything.

henpeckedinchief · 01/07/2018 16:54

Well how was she supposed to know what you wanted until you told her? She's not a mind reader! And was it really 5 full minutes? That must have been literally a hundred packets of crisps?

theymademejoin · 01/07/2018 16:54

Why didn't you speak while she was scanning? She could not have known what you wanted until you told her.

However, if you were standing at the counter, clearly waiting to be dealt with, I would have expected her to stop scanning and see to you. If you were just wandering about, then no, she was reasonable to wait until you made your intentions known to her.

StayingAtTamaras · 01/07/2018 16:56

How big was the item, what was it?

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 16:59

I was clearly there to return my package why else would I go in there with a large package.

Oh I thought it was going to be a bike or something massive!

flumpybear · 01/07/2018 17:03

You're being unreasonable - you were second in the queue for all she knew you may have cause a commotion and taken longer to deal with than crisp person

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:04

henpeckedinchief it felt that long

OP posts:
ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:05

flumpybear she could easily scan and tell me that my package was too big.

To buy crisps?

Rachie1973 · 01/07/2018 17:08

But you were in a queue. It wasn’t your turn.

cariadlet · 01/07/2018 17:08

YABU

Firstly I assume that she was scanning the crisps for a customer who wanted to buy lots of crisps. If a customer is being served in front of you then you wait until they have been served before making your query.

Secondly you probably went onto the internet to see the nearest place to return your item. Why didn't you check the details of what the shop could accept while you were on the website?

Nicknacky · 01/07/2018 17:09

She won't have automatically known you were wanting to leave the parcel. For all she knew you had collected it elsewhere and were in to buy something

Lalliella · 01/07/2018 17:12

The person buying the crisps is unreasonable for buying so much of an unhealthy type of food.

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:12

cariadlet there was no details about what they could/couldn’t accept just the name of the shop and an address.

OP posts:
ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:14

Nicknacky as I’ve said before I was a very large package so I had to use both hands to carry so I was obviously there to return my package not just popping in with my package.

OP posts:
cariadlet · 01/07/2018 17:15

It was a shop. You might have gone in there to buy something. That's what a lot of people go to shops for.

There are other reasons why you might have gone in with a package.

Eg you might have had it delivered to your place of work (I always do this as there's no-one home in the day) and be popping into the shop on your way home or it could be something you'd taken in for a friend and could have been taking it round to them after you'd gone to the shop.
You might have decided to take the parcel in rather than leaving it in the car because you were worried about it getting nicked if it was visible.

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:16

malmi very funny but I couldn’t get any crisps as my hands were full because of the package.

Nanna50 · 01/07/2018 17:16

Was she serving a customer with the crisps, was she in the middle of a stock count of said crisps? YABU not to wait your turn, you may have wanted to return the package and buy something else. If she was busy why should she interrupt another customer to establish your needs?

Cheekyandfreaky · 01/07/2018 17:17

Marmite crisps are delicious @Lalliella

donquixotedelamancha · 01/07/2018 17:18

And was it really 5 full minutes?

Even if she was going really slowly, surely you could scan at least 30 packets a minute? That's a lot of crisps in 5 minutes.

Firstly I assume that she was scanning the crisps for a customer who wanted to buy lots of crisps.

Stock taking surely? I'm assuming she filled up all the crisp racks in the shop to keep OP that long. I'm picturing her going back into a stock room for several boxes.

Presumably (OP) she told you to wait, when you tried to interrupt?

Nicknacky · 01/07/2018 17:19

She isn't unreasonable to finish serving the customer before speaking to you. Not in the slightest!

LongSummerDays · 01/07/2018 17:19

Marmite crisps? Where can one purchase such a thing? I must try these!

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 17:20

Nanna50 She was scanning the crisps for a customer but I was clearly there to return the package so she could easily continue scanning and say my package was too large.
