To cycle ON the pavement?

Hum2 · 30/06/2018 19:43

Haven't ridden in years and just getting back on it. Do not trust some of the cars on the road to overtake me with enough space. I'm still wobbly on it.

AIBU to ride on the pavement? Even when there is a cycle lane on the road (which was a locked at two points today by parked cars!).

I also use the 'green man' to cross the roads rather than moving to the road and crossing like a vehicle.

Yes, completely. If you’re not a pedestrian get on the road.

Yabvu. Pavements are for feet, paws, prams. Not for bikes.

HopefullyAnonymous · 30/06/2018 19:44

YABU. Pavements are for pedestrians.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 30/06/2018 19:45

Yes you are. I believe it's illegal and you can be fined?

MissMooMoo · 30/06/2018 19:45

Yes yabvu, pavement cycling is so annoying!

SnuggyBuggy · 30/06/2018 19:45

I think it's illegal now.

lljkk · 30/06/2018 19:45

You're just gonna get flamed Hum2. People love to hate. I'd hide the thread now & forget about it. Ur Not U imho.

Wolfiefan · 30/06/2018 19:45

Completely unreasonable.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 30/06/2018 19:45

It's illegal.

YoucancallmeVal · 30/06/2018 19:46

Completely and utterly unreasonable. I have lost count of how many adult cyclists have shouted or sworn at my dd - she is profoundly Deaf and cannot hear bikes coming up behind her. Get on the road or get off your bike.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 30/06/2018 19:46

You are but I'd still do it.

glorious · 30/06/2018 19:46

Sorry but yes YABU. Pavements are for pedestrians.

You need to build your confidence on an actual off-road cycle path. Sustrans is a good place to find ones near you. Or in a park where cycling is allowed.

N.b. I am a cyclist.

Minniemountain · 30/06/2018 19:47

YABVU. That drives me potty.

I was walking near our house today with 4 yo DS and DH on crutches and someone whizzed past us on the pavement.

Oysterbabe · 30/06/2018 19:47

Of course yabu. This is a reverse surely?!

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/06/2018 19:47

Do not trust some of the cars on the road to overtake me with enough space.

The solution is not to do likewise to pedestrians.

MetalMidget · 30/06/2018 19:47

You might want to look into a Bikeability course to get your confidence up?

The pavement is for pedestrians, and having a wobbly cyclist on it isn't brilliant for them either- I don't think the police prosecute pavement cyclists any more though.

I do sympathise though, driving standards in the UK are pretty poor, particularly when it comes to sharing the road with other users.

MissusGeneHunt · 30/06/2018 19:48

I'm pretty sure there's an age limit (11?) for riding on pavements.

HeGotManFlu · 30/06/2018 19:48

We have so many cyclists on our pavements where I live, there's no excuse as the roads are really quiet so it's bloody annoying and dangerous.

falaffels · 30/06/2018 19:48

Please don't. It gives us cyclists a bad name!

As others have said - build up confidence on quite roads, before tackeling the big ones.

My council offered cycle training, which was fab.

Camelsinthegobi · 30/06/2018 19:48

YABU. I walk in the middle of the pavement when an adult cyclist comes along. They don’t get past.

John4703 · 30/06/2018 19:49

Cycle on the road as that gives the message to car drivers that it us a shared space. I've been told by a car driver to "get on the pavenent" and reported him to the police who said they would speak to him.

MissusGeneHunt · 30/06/2018 19:52

Ps I got knocked over by some idiot on a bike on a pavement. Not pleasant. They didn't have the excuse either of being nervous, they said to the ambulance people that they were circumnavigating the bus I'd just got off when they went into me but cctv saw them riding for at least 100m on the pavement before.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/06/2018 19:53

Found this...

The maximum court fine is £500 or the police can issue a £50 fixed penalty notice (FPN). In short, it is illegal to cycle on a pavement alongside a road, unless it has been marked as a cycle track.

on Google, from cyclinguk.org.

84CharingCrossRoad · 30/06/2018 19:54

As the mother of a deaf son who regularly has to leap out of the way of cyclists on the pavement and has no warning as he can't hear them coming I think you might guess my answer!
In fact far worse was the time a few years ago when two numnuts on mopeds went roaring through the park with their helmets off and nearly mowed him over. I was furious as he could have been hit by the second while getting out of the way of the first!!! AngryAngryAngryAngry
