to be so sad that I can't take up my UK job offer (visa refused)

The title says it all, pretty much.

I'm an American teacher. I was so excited to receive a job offer to teach in the UK. It was a lifelong dream come true for me.

But my restricted cos was refused, so no visa for me. They are apparently only giving Tier 2 visas to people with huge salaries, so not teachers.

I am crushed. For the past few months I have been talking about nothing but my new job in the UK to my friends. Now whenever anyone asks me when I am going, I have to explain that I'm not going after all. I wish I had never gotten the job offer in the first place because that would have been better than this.

It is even worse because I keep reading about teacher shortages in the UK. They would rather have a shortage than me. It hurts so, so much.

:( heartbroken :(

It’s incrwdinly difficult for a uk teacher to get a job in the USA.

Could you try a different state? Or go for an international school in another area of Europe?

TheIsland · 29/06/2018 22:09

*incredibly

rainingcatsanddog · 29/06/2018 22:09

That's a shame. My children's school has been recruiting for science teachers forever.

Luckymummy22 · 29/06/2018 22:09

YANBU to be upset. It’s understandable. Although the USA are not exactly been kind to immigrants at the moment.

The scary thing is that your president could probably get a British passport 🤬

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/06/2018 22:12

You are probably right, I am not familiar with immigration rules but I guess if there are enough tier 5 from priority countries filtering through then they take precedence over other tiers.

PhilODox · 29/06/2018 22:14

So which subject do you teach? Journalism?

Gilead · 29/06/2018 22:17

linear, I'm really sorry, it seems like it would have been an interesting opportunity for you. You seem enthusiastic and as far as I'm concerned enthusiastic teachers make good teachers, are able to engage students and pass on information. I also feel that there is a need to apologise for the rather small minded folk on this thread as well as our short sighted idiotic government.

linearfunction · 29/06/2018 22:17

No, not journalism. And I don't want to give any personal details. Sorry.

It is a core subject. Secondary.

PhilODox · 29/06/2018 22:20

Drama, perhaps? Grin

linearfunction · 29/06/2018 22:21

Is drama a core subject in the UK? It isn't in the US.

Pinook · 29/06/2018 22:23

@linearfunction, I am really sorry you didn’t get the visa. I know that the government increased the salary band for some working visas which has affected teaching jobs. As far as I am aware the UK have a teacher shortage so it seems barmy to not give a willing and enthusiastic teacher from overseas a visa to work here. I hope perhaps it may be possible for you in the future.

siwel123 · 29/06/2018 22:23

I'm sorry you missed out on what you felt was a once in a life opportunity.

Obviously the government will prioritise letting higher earners in first as it means they can get more tax from them etc.
However we're in need of teachers etc so it's a shame you haven't been let in.

Sorry for the other posters saying because the US system is hard you deserve what you get kind of thing. Wish you the best in the future

Seafoodeatit · 29/06/2018 22:26

I'm very sorry to hear this, is there any way to appeal? It's really shit how disjointed the system is sometimes.

Racecardriver · 29/06/2018 22:26

Maybe time to consider a more lucrative profession if you aspire to work abroad.

e1y1 · 29/06/2018 22:27

Is drama a core subject in the UK? It isn't in the US

No, Phil was just being snarky.

Sorry for you linear, as mentioned our Government is just cutting it’s nose off to spite it’s face at the moment with regards immigration.

Can you appeal, reapply? Sorry I have no idea whatsoever of immigration to the U.K.

e1y1 · 29/06/2018 22:28

Sorry for the other posters saying because the US system is hard you deserve what you get kind of thing. Wish you the best in the future

Yes , very much seems this way, sour grapes perhaps? Not the OPs fault that US immigration has always been difficult.

WerkSupp · 29/06/2018 22:30

Why just the UK? It can be much easier to secure work in China and Japan and the pay much better.

WerkSupp · 29/06/2018 22:34

Wonder how many of these spiteful posters spewing venom that the US is so restrictive are Brexiters? Get ready for your turn soon enough! The EU is going to show you exactly where to stick that type of arrogance in a few months.

mosessupposes · 29/06/2018 22:39

YANBU. This must be really upsetting, and I can see why you would want to go after this experience. It's really unfortunate.
I don't understand why people are mentioning other places. If it is a lifelong dream to live in the UK, it's not like China or Japan would do the job just as well.

LookAtThatCritter · 29/06/2018 22:41

I’m sorry it’s been refused! I’ve just moved from the UK to the USA so I know how excited you must have been. Please ignore all the comments about how people are sure you can find a job in the USA instead - they’re obviously all from people who have never desired to travel, live somewhere else or experience new things!!!

neveradullmoment99 · 29/06/2018 22:42

You want to teach here?
Really? There is a reason for the teacher shortages. They are doing you a favour.

WerkSupp · 29/06/2018 22:43

I don't understand why people are mentioning other places. If it is a lifelong dream to live in the UK, it's not like China or Japan would do the job just as well.

Either one might even do the job even better if you keep an open mind or if you are truly wanting an abroad experience.

SanFranBear · 29/06/2018 22:46

YANBU at all - I really feel for you

LegoBitcho · 29/06/2018 22:50

It was linked to salary and i think recently it was no visas with salary under £50k was being approved. I work in recruitment and the last 8 months have been unprecedented for visa approvals.

It sucks for you Linear Flowers

ChickenOrEgg6 · 29/06/2018 22:52

Some nasty bastards out tonight OP.
Last time I checked the US president isn't a school teacher so I have no idea why PP's are saying "yes but x y and z/the USA isn't any better".
She's personally gutted that she's effectively been priced out when she had a job offer that she would've loved, did the application process etc only to be told "sorry you won't earn enough". That's pretty shit and I'm really sorry OP. Not sure where you were planning on going but my DD's school has 3 postings for a teacher they can't fill and the local secondary has another 4 that they just can't fill, constantly relying on temp and agency staff and working their existing team to the bone just so that the pupils are still taught.
I really feel for you.
