Is this a crap dinner?

Currently juggling 3yo and a baby so not sure if I'm coming or going sometimes.
Randomly we were on the topic of dinners today and my friend commented that what my DS1 is having for dinner "isn't very good for him" and "is it just one of those weeks?" She is very into everything organic and made from scratch so I don't know if she's a bit OTT to say it or if she has a point.

He's having red pesto pasta with peas and chicken breast.
Yesterday he had a chicken drumstick with cous cous, tomatoes and carrot sticks (carrots are his favourite).
Tomorrow he's having cottage pie with carrots, onion and cauliflower in with the beef sauce and with sweet potato on top rather than regular potatoes.

Through the day he will snack on stuff like rice cakes, fruit or yogurt. The occasional digestive. His favourite lunchtime snack is buttered toast, cheese, lots of cucumber and will usually ask for either a banana or some other fruit.

AIBU to think it's not too bad?

Today I was stocking up on Ella's pouches and veggie "crisps" etc for ds1 (8mo)

I cook a lot of purées and do BLW with veggies, fruit, meats etc

The lovely mum in the aisle with me joked about this being emergency food and asked if he was my first (he is). I said yes snd she commented on how she hadn't used pouches for her first and wished she had. I joked about not setting the bar too high in case I had another. She was just being nice so not offended.

But seriously, what's the obsession with food? It's not as if I'm giving McDonald's or crack so why are pouches even potentially a "thing"? What's actually going to happen if I don't give him homemade food 100% of the time (seasoned with my sweat and maybe a couple of tears?!)

I feel like there's a lot of orthorexia out there and a strange shaming culture. I have never followed a diet myself, I just eat everything in moderation and plan to do the same for growing son, with lots of veggies and the occasional treat, even now.

Sorry, going off on one with my story. OP your food sounds healthy and yummy. YANBU and your friend sounds rather strange

PamsterWheel · 29/06/2018 18:50

She sounds like a cunt to me

#HTH

wherearetheclowns we were very worried they would lessen the topping too.but no all is well and the now ratio of ice cream to topping is fab aren't they :)
buddhasbelly depending on your area there are a few.get one now hun!

throwcushions · 29/06/2018 18:55

Maybe she was thinking that pesto can be salty and that the pesto meal doesn't have much veg. It's still not a bad meal at all though. And she was a bitch to comment like that even if it was smiley faces and sausages or whatever.

buddhasbelly · 29/06/2018 18:59

kateandme we had a gap of what to do tomorrow afternoon. You have now solved that conundrum (we have a mcds right next to a great park close to us)

OP of it makes you feel any better my abusive ex once phoned the health visitor for giving our dd tuna.. She was 1.5 yrs and he was deeply concerned about the mercury level. The HV gave him the book that suggests tuna sweetcorn pasta for a weaning recipe. Oddly not seeing her for 3 yrs is apparently fine to do Hmm (she bloody loves tuna Grin)

I think people and food relationships have become so f*kd up nowadays.and the shaming is so bad with it.i wish there would be more tolerance.and more just teaching people balance.teaching people to love themselves and therefore there bodies and diet will genrally follow.to do what you can and then don't feel bad when you just cant be arsd.as long as in general your trying to give them a varied balance to there food.and teaching them to cook.eating together when you can and making them see food is not good or bad just have the balance there.
mcains chips and an egg.fine.
veggies and shephards pie the next fine.
mini milks in the heat fine!
as long as from you they are getting lesson in the key to balance and that its okay to be "good and bad" and that just because one day you don't manage your five a day doesn't mean your bad.and that they are taught to have a health relationship to all foods they will be ok.

kateandme · 29/06/2018 19:00

buddhasbelly sounds good to me.enjoy.

Babybearsporij · 29/06/2018 19:00

Sounds fine to me! Thought you were going to say cheese toasties like mine are having tonight Grin.

buddhasbelly · 29/06/2018 19:01

Oh and OP you've also just reminded me of a past date where I ordered pesto pasta and the guy commented about the stodginess of my order. I told him where to go and went on to enjoy my pesto Grin

kateandme · 29/06/2018 19:02

buddhasbelly my mum is in a running group and after finding out about the new mcflurry minis they have looked up a route that will take them there! :) there is actually a running track on the gps to mcdonalds hehe.people have their priority's right.

snowballupahill · 29/06/2018 19:03

That all sounds lovely . Sounds like competitive mothering...

DiddimusStench · 29/06/2018 19:06

What Psterwheel said.

My MIL gave me hrs time over using oven chips, claiming that wedges would be better. I read her the ingredients in the packet which happened to be potato and oil and asked her what she used for wedges....

ScattyCharly · 29/06/2018 19:11

Silly friend.

My kids have just scoffed a Dominos pizza. Bloody delicious.

Cagliostro · 29/06/2018 19:11

It's just how eye roll
😂

What does this paragon of motherhood cook for her darlings then?

😳

ammtac · 29/06/2018 19:15

I think most of us would envy you being that prepared!

Dancergirl · 29/06/2018 19:15

Your food sounds lovely!

Your 'friend', on the other hand, doesn't.

Dancergirl · 29/06/2018 19:16

Forgot to add OP, I would be overjoyed if my dc ate like yours! They barely touch any veg at all.

kateandme · 29/06/2018 19:17

the grandma today announced that cucumber and salmon upset her so she cant have it for tea.and so do microwaved jackets.hmmmi seem to remember my whole life her house smelling of her FISH supper and that burnt skin.and she doesn't yet know we mike our potatoes every time before finishing them in the oven!some people really do make shit up.

kateandme · 29/06/2018 19:19

I for one didn't no what couscous was at that age haha.
pesto on tortilini was posh to us!

BellaJessica · 29/06/2018 19:20

As someone upthread said, your friend sounds orthorexic. She is trying to say that your very healthy meals are not healthy. Thats not normal and is worrying.

BrendasUmbrella · 29/06/2018 19:26

What does your friend make for her children?

CremeDeSudo · 29/06/2018 19:26

How did you get a 3yo to eat such a variety of decent food! I'm sure DS was surviving on potato face and fish fingers at that age because he basically wouldn't eat anything else Blush

kateandme · 29/06/2018 19:35

cremedesudo same for my brother! and nows hes a trainer and physio sports analyst for a top football team.
